abased....brought down to the lowest of the low in position, greatly humbled, even humiliated.

Abba....Da Da, Daddy, Pappa, Pop.

abhor....to hate with great contempt, detest, spurn.

abhorrest....see abhor above.

Abia, course of....Zechariah (KJV spells his name: Zacharias) the priest, father of John the Baptist was a member of the "course of Abia." Actually Abia is a KJV version of Abijah. All priests in the tribe of Levi were assigned to a "course." This is something like a platoon or a squadron in the military. It is a grouping of priests who always work together. Because there was only one Temple, but thousands of priests the priests were rotated from one course of priests to the next course of priests. In New Testament times there were so many priests that a priest was fortunate to get to do what Zechariah did once or twice in a lifetime. See Luke 1:5,9.

abide....to rest, or dwell, to wait. **Another important meaning of this word is found in Acts 20:23 where "abide" means "await."

Abilene....located North East of Mount Hermon and West of Damascus. It was a district under a tetrarch. See Lysanias.

abomination(s)....detestable, that which is horribly hated, horrible in the sight of God.

abounded....overflowed with plenty, above and beyond all expectation.

"Abraham's bosom"....this phrase was used by Jesus to describe Paradise, the place where Old Testament believer's spirits resided. No one could enter Heaven until Jesus paid the great price for the sins of all mankind. Jesus tells the story of how, at HIS time and previously the center of the Earth had two areas: Hell and Paradise. The evil rich man died and went into Hell. But Lazarus the godly beggar who had a sad life on Earth died and went to Paradise. There was a great chasm or gulf that separated the two areas so that no one could go from one to the other. After Jesus' death the believers there were led by Christ into Heaven. Hell swallowed up the vacated Paradise and now only fallen souls and demons occupy the center of the Earth. Jesus called Paradise "Abraham's bosom" because Abraham was placed in charge of the believers there at that time.

abroad....all about, everywhere.

abstinence....going without. In Acts 27:21 it is referring to the fact that those on the endangered ship went without eating for many days.

"abusers of themselves with mankind"....the KJV uses this five word phrase to translate a single word in the Greek. That word means "sodomites," or homosexuals. 1st Corinthians 6:9 is where this is found.

acceptation....this word means acceptance or approval.

accord....agreement, harmony of minds, consent.

accursed....devoted to destruction, a doomed thing, vile, vilification, excommunicated.

Achaia....the Roman province that was made up of almost all of ancient Greece south of another province called Macedonia. If you look at a map of modern Greece, Achaia was located on the very Southern portion of modern Greece that is almost an island but for a tiny finger of land that bridges back to the larger land body.

Achor....The valley where Achan and his family were executed for stealing loot that was dedicated for destruction in Jericho. And so Achor means trouble, or Valley of Trouble. Achan got into deadly trouble by stealing forbidden things. His sin brought a curse on the whole Nation causing the deaths of many. They had to cleanse him and his family out of the Nation.

acquit....The hebrew means to make clean. The old English word means to hold guiltless. This word is found only in the Old Testament in Job 10:14 and Nahum 1:3. Both of those verses could be misunderstood by some thinking that God will not "clean" the wicked. But I do believe that these verses mean that God will not acquit or clean those who have chosen to be wicked ones, who have set their focus and desire upon evil.

adamant....a stone believed to be so hard that nothing can penetrate it.

adder....a venomous snake.

adjure....to command on oath before God.

administrations....In 1st Corinthians 12:5 this word is used as we would speak of managerial directions, or management, leadership methodologies.

admonish....to gently warn, caution, advise or even rebuke, but all in a loving manner.

admonition....a gentle reminding or warning or teaching, even correcting...but with a gentle and tender loving motive.

ado....much activity about nothing.

Adramyttium....a harbor in Mysia in the Northwestern corner of what is now Turkey, minus that part of Turkey that is on the Northwest side of the passage to the Black Sea. This was part of what was then called the Roman province of Asia.

Adria....the sea that is between Italy and Greece, but also that is South of both countries.

Adullam....is a Canaanite town 27 miles due East, airline, from the coastal town of Ashkelon (Ascalon) and 25 miles due West of the shore of the Dead Sea. In other words about halfway between the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. **Not far from the town is thought to be the location of a cave, by the same name, that David used as a hideout and headquarters when King Saul was seeking to take his life. The Hebrew word for Adullam means "refuge," "retreat."

adultery....when someone who is married goes outside their marriage to have intimacy with someone they are not married to. Jesus clarifies the definition even more. HE says that "adultery" is committed when a person simply looks longingly upon another person even though they never do anything beyond the mental exercise of longing!! Spiritually adultery is when a person turns away from the true God to worship an idol or to elevate something else as god.

adversaries....those who oppose, enemies, opponents.

adversity....misfortune, calamity, affliction, distress.

Aenon....a location near the Jordan river, not terribly far from Jericho. Different experts have suggested different locations. This place is mentioned in John's Gospel as a locale where John the Baptist ministered.

afar....far.

affections....fondnesses, attachments, loves.

affliction....a state of pain, distress or grief.

affrighted....frightened.

afore....before.

aforehand....before the time, in advance of, earlier.

aforetime....before, before now.

afoot....by foot, walking.

Agrippa....there were two King Agrippas. The first was King of Judea from 41 to 44 a.d., and was the grandson of Herod the Great. He won favorable reactions from the Jews. He knew how to please them. **Agrippa II was the son of Agrippa I and was totally loyal to Rome. He wasn't as great a friend to the Jews and antagonized the Priests of the Temple by not complying with their wishes. Agrippa II is the Agrippa who heard Saint Paul's defense in Ceasarea with Festus.

Ahab....a self serving king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel made famous by his even more wicked Phoenician wife, Jezebel.

Ahaz....a king of Judah, the Southern Kingdom in the period 735-715 B.C. He was the son and heir of King Jotham. He reigned from age 20. This king is remembered for his idolatry and sacrificing his own son by fire.

Ai....this was a city in the Jewish tribal area of Ephraim. It was located just about two miles, a bit South of true East of the spot named Bethel, where Jacob had his dream of the ladder into Heaven. Ai was a city that first defeated the invading Israelites because Achan had secretly kept forbidden loot from the defeat of Jericho. And this brought a curse upon Israel's armies and the death of many soldiers. After Achan was executed Joshua destroyed Ai. Later Aiath and and Aija were built very close to the spot Ai had been built on. And so Aiath and Aija are approximately on the same spot.

Alexandria....was the capital city of Egypt during the Greek and Roman eras. It was located on the coast at the western side of the Nile river delta. During the Roman period it was second only to Rome itself in World importance. It was a noted center of knowledge with one of the Worlds most complete libraries of the time.

Alexandrians....generally citizens of the city of Alexandria in Egypt. However in Acts 6:9 it is referring to Jews of the Diaspora or dispersion who live or are from Alexandria and visit or have returned to Jerusalem.

alien(s)....this word has NOTHING to do with extra-terrestrials when it is used in the Bible. It simply means those from a foreign family, country or culture.

alleging....declaring, asserting, indicating.

allegory....a story in which the characters, places and situations have a deeper meaning as you might find in a parable or a fable. An allegory is an important teaching tool, to help people see deep truths.

alms....anything given to relieve the plight of the poor and their suffering such as money, food and clothes.

almsdeeds....You can find this word in Acts 9:36. Almsdeeds are acts of generosity to the poor.

alpha....the first letter in the Greek alphabet. This letter is similar to the letter "A" in the Latin alphabet.

alway....always

Amalek....one of the grandsons of Esau. Out of Amalek came the tribe of the Amalekites. The Edomites and Amalekites early beginnings are intertwined genealogically. But the Amalekites were primarily nomadic desert people. They traveled the wildernesses from Mount Sinai into Arabia and came into Canaan at times. The Amalekites treated the Hebrews so mercilessly on the Exodus that they were forever enemies.

Amalekites....see Amalek above.

amazement....Today words with the root "amaze" only mean something like astonishment and wonder. This is true in the KJV most often. But "amaze words" are also used at times to translate meanings like agitation or fear. See 1st Peter 3:6 for an example of this useage.

ambassage....a delegation perhaps of diplomats with a message, ambassadors. Luke 14:32.

amen....this word originated in Hebrew and has spread to most all languages. It means: truly, so be it. We know it as the final word spoken in a prayer.

amend....get well, get better.

amiable....beloved, well beloved, lovable.

amiss....wrong, out of order, improper.

Ammon....a region and people 20 or 25 miles East of the Jordan river, reaching out into the Syrian/North Arabian Desert. That border is near where the Jabbok River has North and South tributaries coming together. The Ammon people appear to have descended from Lot's youngest daughter. Remember how Lot's daughters drugged Lot on his own wine in order to produce children? Genesis 19:38 indicates that the Ammon people are indeed descendents of Lot through his youngest daughter.

Amorites....one of the nations of people who lived in Canaan prior to the coming of the Jews from Egypt. The Amorites had to be overthrown and defeated by Israel as God helped them take Canaan.

Amphipolis....the capital city of district number one in Macedonia. It was on the river Strymon, about three miles from the sea coast. Paul passed through this city on his way to Thessalonica.

Anathema....the KJV translators decided that instead of translating this word from the Greek to English that they would simply take the Greek word and spell it using the English consonants and vowels. So basically you are looking at a Greek word. This word means: spiritually devoting something or someone to the uses of Satan and evil forever, and totally separating them from the people and the work of God. In other words accursed or cursed as the eternal possession of darkness! It is a very, very strong word. And that is why some translations of the Bible translate it excommunicated or accursed. Paul says that if anyone does not love Jesus Christ let them be "Anathema." I'm sure he is speaking of those who have set themselves against the Lord Jesus in a very strong, permanent and purposeful way. I don't believe he is speaking of lost people who do not understand exactly who Jesus is. [See 1st Corinthians 16:22]

ancients....elders, the respected, seniors. In Jewish culture senior citizens are respected and honored for their counsel in all matters. This word is found nine times, and only in the Old Testament.

angle....a fish hook with or without a line and a pole.

anise....a plant related to carrots that produces a seed that is useful as a medicine and for fragrance. The Pharisees demanded their followers tithe one out of every ten seeds to the temple.

anointing....the pouring of oil upon a king to signify the presence of the Holy Spirit upon that king. Or, the touch of the Holy Spirit on a person or a holy object. Oil is a symbol and a type of the Holy Spirit. Oil lubricates, moistens, refreshes releases the power of a machine. The Holy Spirit lubricates, moistens, refreshes and empowers in a greater way. Perhaps that is why God uses the anointing with oil as one of HIS symbols of HIS Spirit.

anon....at once, immediately.

Antioch....there were two different cities named Antioch. The one spoken of in Acts 11:19 and following is Syrian Antioch. It was a very great and important city in the Roman world, almost as important as Alexandria and even Rome. It is located today in the tiny, disputed Southern finger of Turkey. In fact the modern city of Antakya is Syrian Antioch of old. On a modern map you will find Antakya 174 miles, airline, North of Beirut, Lebanon. It was located in the then Roman province of Syria. It is in Syrian Antioch that the followers of Christ were first called "Christians." ***The second city is Antioch of Pisidia. Although it does not exist today it was located near the Roman district of Pisidia, about 100 miles due North of the Harbor of Pamphylia in South central Turkey.

Antipatris....a town ten miles Northeast of Joppa (Jaffa) and ten miles North of Lydda (also known as Ludd or Lod). In this town was a Roman outpost that gave troops a rest stop on their marches between Jerusalem and Caesare (the Roman capital in the Holy Land). Also, the town of Antipatris marked the border between Judea and Samaria in the First Century.

Apollonia....this was a Greek city in the province of Macedonia that Paul and Silas passed on their way to Thessalonica. Apollonia was on the road called Via Egnatia some 30 miles from Amphipolis and 38 miles distant from Thessalonica.

Apollos....a traveling preacher/evangelist spoken of in the New Testament. From what we can piece together about him this man began his ministry with only a limited understanding of Jesus' ministry. It seems that Apollos may have received Jesus as Saviour under the teaching of some believer who may have come to Apollos' native Alexandria in Egypt. Apollos understood and preached well salvation by faith. But he knew little or nothing of the Baptism in the Holy Ghost. Paul's friends, Aquilla and Priscilla enlightened him in these truths that he knew little of. And perhaps he received the Baptism in the Holy Ghost at that time.

apostle(s)....in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Acts the word apostles refers to the 12 men Jesus chose to be nearest HIM during his ministry. Paul appears to be Jesus' replacement for Judas who betrayed Christ. But in the writings of Paul we learn of the office of apostle which the Lord has established by the power of the Holy Spirit to function even now. The twelve apostles are with the Lord. But there are God ordained ones who function in the office of apostle today. Apostles have wider responsibilities than pastors. Apostles are called of God to open new works, areas and churches. Their office and ministry is primary.

apostleship....the office or calling of apostle. See "apostle" above.

apparelled....appareled

Appii Forum....in Acts 28:15 Paul and his guards pass through this point which was a station on the famous Appian Way (which reached from the Bay of Naples to Rome). The Appii Forum was a market place and trading center about 40 miles from Rome. It was here that some Christians from Rome met Paul as he approached Rome.

apprehend....to seize, to understand, to arrest.

apt....this word means "able" or "prepared" or even "gifted" to do something like warfare or teaching.

archangel....highest ranking angel, like Michael and Gabriel.

Areopagite....a member of the regular council that met on the Areopagus, Mars Hill. See Areopagus below.

Areopagus....this is a rocky hill, 370 feet tall, in Athens, Greece. The remains of this famous meeting place are still visited by historians and tourists today. In ancient times trials and councils were held there. This hill is between the Acropolis and the Pnyx and a bit North of them. Saint Paul was invited here and preached the Gospel to the philosophers and thinkers. This location is also called "Mars Hill."

Arimathea....the home town of a man named Joseph who begged for the body of Jesus and put it in his own tomb. This Joseph of Armathea was a disciple of Jesus'. The town of Arimathea has not been located exactly. However it is believed to have been about 20 miles East of the coastal town of Joppa.

armour....armor

Arpad....a city kingdom in the extreme north of modern day Syria. If you find the modern city of Aleppo in Syria today, Arpad was about 25 miles North of that city. This city was destroyed by the Assyrians in 738 and 720 b.c.

Arphad....KJV spelling of Arpad. See Arpad above.

arrayed....dressed in clothes, perhaps clothes that were more often spectacular than plain.

artificer....a craftsman, a skilled worker in some area of art, construction, building.

Aser....a KJV New Testament spelling for the tribe of Asher, one of the 12 sons of Jacob which formed one of the tribal Jewish clans.

Ashdod....one of the five important cities of the Philistines. It was three miles inland from the coast, between Gaza and Joppa and ten miles North of Ashkelon.

Asia....a Roman province which today would be known as Western Turkey. People from this province were present at Pentecost.

asp(s)....small poisonous snake(s).

ass....a donkey.

assayed....attempted.

Assos....this was a seaport in Mysia, in what is today the Northwestern corner of Turkey. See Mysia.

Assur....KJV form of Asshur. One of the sons of Shem, the founding ancestor of Assyria and the Assyrians. Also Asshur was one of the four various capitals of Assyria during various parts of Assyria's history. The city exists today as Qal'at Sherqat in Northern Iraq. Asshur in Balaam's prophecy probably is referring to the nation of Assyria. [See Numbers 24:22,24]

assuredly....for sure.

asunder....divided, separated in different directions as in an explosion or impact. Rock is broken asunder when struck by a heavy hammer. A divorce puts the man and wife asunder from each other.

Assyria....Assyria and Babylonia both occupied the same area that today is known as Iraq. Assyria was the earlier kingdom. It's capital was Asshur. It goes back to 3,000 b.c. The Northern Kingdom of Israel was conquered and the 10 Jewish tribes living there were carried off and relocated elsewhere in the massive kingdom of Assyria. Assyria had the secret as to where the lost ten tribes were lost to.

astonied....astonished

atonement....the reconciliation between God and man following the terrible separation of sin and darkness. God and man are brought into a condition of being "at one" with each other.

Attalia....a coastal port city of Pamphylia that still exists on the Southern coast of Turkey. It is called Antalya today.

austere....severe, harsh, rigid.

avenge....in Luke 18:3 this word is used to mean "vindicate" or "give justice." The widow was not asking for revenge on her opponent, only justice. **This word can mean "revenge," though, as in Romans 12:19.

averse....turn away. But is also used in KJV in some passages like Micah 2:8 to mean "against."

Azal or Azel....this location is unknown at this time. The great earthquake that will open a valley of escape for the Jews in the last days will run as far as this place. On the other hand it could be that the KJV translators mistook this word for a location. Perhaps the Lord will reveal the answer to this mystery as we get nearer the end of this dispensation??

Azotus....KJV New Testament spelling of the city Ashdod. See Ashdod.

Baal....A Canaanite fertility god. A constantly recurring false worship that Israel is tempted again and again with.

Baali....pagan word for lord.

Baalim....the plural of Baal.

Baalpeor....When Israel was in the Wilderness after leaving Egypt, camped at Shittim they succumbed to temptation. The men were drawn to the Moabite women and entered into illicit intimacies associated with the wicked religion of the Moabites. It was the god of Mount Peor, or Baal of Peor. It is a very dark chapter in Jewish history.

babblings....worthless monologues and worthless discussions.

babe....baby.

babes....babies, small children. Paul uses this term in 1st Corinthians 3:1 to refer to Christians who are so new and/or under-developed and/or immature that he was forced to use very simple and basic teaching. They were unable to handle the rich and deep truths of God.

Baca, valley of....no one knows where or if this valley ever existed. The name is from a word that means "to weep." Perhaps this valley has to do with sadness.

bade....asked. (Another past tense of bid. See "bid.")

baken....baked

Balac....Balak

banquetings....this word, found only in 1st Peter 4:3 is speaking about "alcohol drinking bouts" and other foolish alcohol related social activities. I'm sure Peter would have considered our modern day "cocktail party" one of the "banquetings" to be avoided. This word certainly has changed in meaning since 1611.

barbarians....meaning simply non-Greek, non-Roman, non-Jewish and non-Christian. There is no negative meaning as we connect to the word "barbarian" today, other than such a one might be primitive in their lifestyle and not highly civilized. But today the word barbarian makes us think of a violent, dangerous person with a spear and a bone in his nose.

barbarous....in KJV English this word means simply foreign or those different from yourself. It has no negative meaning as it does today. So in Acts 28:2 it means that the native islanders were non-Roman and non-Greek and also non-Christian.

bare....paste tense of "bear." "...bare witness of him..." means John "bore" or "carried" the witness of Jesus." See John 1:15.

Barjona....Jesus says Peter's full name in Matthew 16:17, Simon Barjona. Barjona literally means "son of Jona."

barren....a word used to describe a married women who cannot conceive, or cannot carry to full term, who is childless.

base....worthless, inferior, low, considered no good.

baser....most worthless, most inferior

Bashan....a fertile, stoneless plateau, East of Lake Galilee, known for excellent wheat, marvelous oak groves and very healthy cattle. It was once part of the Kingdom of Og.

bastard....a child born of parents who were not married to each other.

bath....a unit of liquid measurement equivalent to five and a half (5 1/2) American gallons, or 21 to 23 liters. This volume is supposedly equivalent to the dry measurement called an epahah. This information was derived through estimates made from jar fragments which were labeled as one bath measuring pots.

beam....a two by four or a two by six, a major piece of wood.

Beelzebub....a very negative name for Satan.

befallen....had happened.

befell....came upon, happened to

beforehand....before the event, before the fact, in advance.

beforetime....previously.

begat....to have produced a child or children.

beguile....deceive, fool, delude.

begotten....Jesus is the "only begotten of the Father." Or, HE is the only biological Son of God the Father through the Holy Spirit. All who have received Jesus are adopted sons and daughters of God. Paul uses this term to refer to the disciples he has birthed or "begotten" by the Gospel into the kingdom. See First Corinthians 4:15. NOTE: in Revelation 1:5 Jesus is called "the first begotten of the dead." Jesus is the very first to have been transformed from the body of flesh to the supernatural and forever body that all the saints shall enjoy when we are changed in a "twinkling of an eye." [See 1st Corinthians 15:52] This transformation of Jesus' body took place in the Resurrecton."

behaviour....behavior

beheld....saw, viewed, caught sight of.

beholdest....look upon.

behoved....to be necessary, to be fitting. Today this word is spelled "behooved."

Belial....wickedness, trouble, worthlessness. This word is very probably a nickname for Satan.

Beliar....a variant spelling of Belial. See Belial above.

beloved....loved one, one who receives affection.

benevolence....this word has several meanings: kindness, good will, or it can mean giving to one's marriage partner the kindness of meeting their desire for physical intimacy.

Berea....this is a city in the province of Macedonia that was located 50 miles Southwest of Thessalonica. It lay at the foot of Mount Bermios.

beseech....to beg, implore, pray with urgency, a deep request.

"beside himself"....out of his mind, mentally out of it.

"beside ourselves"....insane, out of our minds. (See 2nd Cor. 5:13)

besought....begged.

bestead....this word only appears in Isaiah 8:21 in the phrase "hardly bestead," which means "hard pressed."

bestow....to deposit, lay up in store, or to give to another.

Bethabara....the KJV translators chose to use this name for the location where John the Baptist baptized. This name means place of crossing or ford. Many ancient copies of the Gospel of John use the word Bethany rather than Bethabara. Neither of these villages or towns have been found. The exact spot where John Baptized has not been found. The way rivers move over the centuries it is quite possible the exact spot is now far from the current path of the River Jordan.

Bethany....small village a little over one and a half miles East of Jerusalem. The village is actually on the Eastern slope of the Mount of Olives.

Bethesda....a pool, spoken of in the Gospel of John where Jesus performed a miracle on a man unable to walk for 38 years. For many years liberals said this pool did not exist and as a result they said that this indicated the Gospel of John was written by one who had imperfect knowledge of Jerusalem. Also they hinted that the Gospel of John must have been put together by someone other than John and maybe long after he lived. But archeologists followed John's directions and found the pool deep under later construction. It was exactly where John said it was. The Bible is never wrong!!

Bethphage....a village that Jesus passed through prior to reaching the village of Bethany on HIS way to Jerusalem. Bethphage's actual location has been debated. It certainly was very near to Bethany.

Bethsaida....a town located on the North shore of Lake Galilee about 700 feet East of the mouth of the Jordan river that empties into the Lake.

betroth....a father pledges he will give his daughter in marriage. This is a part of arranged marriages, the way in Biblical times.

bewail....weep, moan, sob, grieve.

bewitched....this word can mean something as simple as "trickery." In other words someone believes in what another does because that that other has used trickery, even slight of hand to fool them. Or, this word can also mean someone who has taken some kind of dark spiritual control over someone else. This second meaning has to do with the more serious demonic areas. Please see the article connected to the word "sorcery."

betwixt....between.

bewrayeth....(notice the strange spelling, with a "w") This is from an old word "bewray" which means just about what our current word "betray" means. In fact my eyes have often tricked me into thinking I'm seeing "betrayeth."

bid....ask, say.

bidden....told, or asked.

bier....a wooden form with handles on which a dead body or coffin is carried.

bishop....episcopate, overseer, supervisor.

bishop "office of a bishop"....the phrase "office of a bishop," in 1st Timothy 3:1, translates a single Greek word. The word is speaking about the position of overseer or bishop, one who supervises pastors who are over churches. Today we call these folks district superintendents, bishops, overseers and executive directors, etc. But basically these folks supervise churches and church leaders.

bishoprick....KJV spelling for the word "bishopric." This word is used only once in the KJV in Acts 1:20. The word means diocese, which is the district or area over which a certain bishop has jurisdiction or responsibilities. In this scripture Peter is quoting Psalm 109:8 as it prophetically foretells how Judas, the betrayer, as one of the 12 apostles would lose his "office" or "bishoprick." And certainly Judas' suicide insured that he would hold no earthly spiritual office.

blasphemeth....to blaspheme, which is speaking or doing slanderous or reproachful, or cursing, or contemptible, or dishonoring, or reviling things against the Name, the Person or the works of God Almighty.

blaze....to spread news, to divulge, giving a very full report

bless....to speak well of, praise.

boisterous....rough, violent, turbulent.

bolster....this word appears five times in the Bible, all in the book of 1st Samuel. The English word "bolster" means simply "head rest" or pillow. But the Hebrew word it translates means any place where one lays there head. It is more the position or spot the head rests on and might be a stone, a pillow a block or a bed, whatever the head is resting on.

bond....in 1st Corinthians 12:13 it refers to a person in slavery. In other passages it can mean a vow or obligation, pledge, reproof, warning, band, shackle, ligament, control. This word is used to translate six Hebrew and Greek words.

booty, booties....material for barter, spoils of war or violence, plunder, loot, prizes of robbery and/or war.

borne....carried.

bosom....in John 1:18 we read, "...in the bosom of the Father..." This is the "heart" of the Father.

bottles....wine containers that are made from an animal stomach. They did not have glass bottles in Bible times. The animal flesh that held the wine would swell during fermentation. This stretched the skin. Later the skin hardened or cured in that swollen condition. If new wine was placed in an old, swollen and hardened bottle the fermentation gases would rupture or explode the skin.

bound....[Hosea 5:10] An old English word for "boundary."

bowels....anguish, tenderness, pity, affection, deep feelings, the emotions, but also the intestines or digestive tract.

blasphemy....to speak slanderously, or wickedly or negatively, especially against God or that which is holy.

blasting....blight

"Branch of the Lord"....This expression can be found in Isaiah 4:2. Also in Isaiah 11:1 we find the word "branch" used for the same purpose. This expression is speaking of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the Branch of the Lord, and Jesus is the "root out of dry ground." This is one of many names for Jesus Christ the Messiah, the Son of God.

bridechamber....the bridal room, the honeymoon suite.

bruised....crushed, oppressed by the powers of darkness (in Luke 4:18).

bruit....this word is found in Jeremiah 10:22 and Nahum 3:19. It means "a rumor" or "a report." The Hebrew refers to an "announcement or something that is heard."

buffeted....knocked about, perhaps hit in the face, harassed, forced into adverse situations.

bushel....this KJV word only appears in the Gospels where it says that one doesn't light a candle to put a "bushel" over it. The word used in the Greek means "a vessel or bowl used for measuring dry volume." So think of this "bushel" as a "quart measuring bowl."

Bithynia....a Roman district or province along the Southern coast of the Black Sea only 60 to 20 miles wide and running perhaps 250 miles. This area is today the Northwest to middle North of Turkey.

busybodies....this word and it's singular (busybody) are used to translate three original language words that refer to those who are "meddlers" or "gossips." And one of the words has a secondary meaning of "magic." And so perhaps this might mean someone who uses some occult practice in which to meddle in other people's affairs.

Caesar....the first Caesar of Rome truly carried Caesar as a surname, Julius Caesar (102 b.c. to 44 b.c.). Augustus Caesar (27 b.c. to 14 a.d) the adopted son of Julius was the last Caesar in Julius' family. After that Caesar ceased to be a surname and became a title of authority. Augustus was the Caesar in power at Christ's birth. Tiberius (14 a.d. to 37. a.d.) was the Caesar during Jesus' ministry and the first few years of the Church Age. Caligula (37 a.d. to 41 a.d.) is not mentioned in the New Testament, but was certainly in power as the Church began to spread out of Jerusalem. Claudius (41 a.d. to 54 a.d.) was the Caesar in the time of the greatest spread of the early Church about the Mediterranean. Nero (54 a.d. to 68 a.d.) was the Caesar when persecution began to be more organized against the Church. Vespasian (69 a.d. to 79 a.d.) was the Caesar when Jerusalem rebelled and was utterly destroyed in 70 A.D. per Jesus' prophetic warnings. Domitian (81 a.d. to 96 a.d.) is the Caesar who probably killed the greatest numbers of believers. There are about five other Caesars that I have not mentioned who played lesser rolls because of shortened ruling time or because of other factors.

Caesarea....a coastal city located 23 miles South of Mount Carmel.

Caesarea Philippi....a Gentile city located on the lower South West slope of Mount Hermon, on a terrace 1150 feet above sea level, with a view of the fertile upper end of the Jordan valley. This area is watered by one of the head water feeder streams of the Jordan. The location is about 25 miles, airline, North, Northeast of Galilee making it probably a 40 to 50 mile trek on foot from Capernaum. Caesarea Philippi is about as far North as Jesus ever went. It is way up in the area given to the tribe of Dan, a very lush and beautiful place.

caldron....large boiling pot.

Calneh....This city's exact location has not been discovered. There may have been two cities by this name. In Genesis 10:9-10 Calneh appears to be associated with the kingdom of king Nimrod. Isaiah and Amos mention a city of Calneh that might be in the same general area as the city of Arpad. Others think there was only one city of Calneh. This is a mystery. One map I looked at showed Calneh about where the current city of Aleppo is located in modern day northern Syria. Perhaps archeologists will discover more in days to come???

Calno....KJV spelling of Calneh. See Calneh above.

Calvary....from the Latin meaning skull. The place where Jesus was crucified. See Golgotha.

Cana....Cana of Galilee has not been absolutely located. But the best information indicates it to be nine miles North of Nazareth. The remains of a village are at that point.

Canaan....the homeland of the Jew, the land God gave them as an inheritance for all time. This is the land in which God aided HIS people in removing the Canaanite peoples, those who lived there previously who were child sacrificers and fertility worshipers. Some older KJV manuscripts spell this word "Chanaan."

canst....can.

Capernaum....located right on the Northwestern shore of Lake Galilee, was the headquarters of Jesus' early ministry. Here Peter and Andrew and perhaps James and John had homes. The Town today is only an archaeological site.

Cappadocia....a Roman province in what today would be far eastern Turkey. People from this province were present in Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost.

captivity...."bring again the captivity of Israel" and such phrases mean the opposite of what the modern mind would see it. It means to release or end the captivity.

Carchemish....an important city on the Euphrates river in today's modern, Southern Turkey. This was a provincial capital city of the Hittite empire. Then the Assyrians captured it. Later the Babylonians ruled it and defeated Pharaoh Neco when he brought his army to that city so far North of Egypt to attack. Pharaoh lost his entire army to a man.

care....worry, stress.

careful....anxious, full of cares or to worry. Thus the phrase, "be careful for nothing..." does NOT mean you should cross busy streets without looking! Instead it means, "don't worry."

Carmel....Mount Carmel juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. It is known for it's beauty. There Elijah called fire down on the sacrifice.

carnal....in Romans 7:14 we find this word used. It refers to the evil and fallen Adam and Eve nature. See "old man." In First Corinthians 3:1, and following, we find this term again. Paul is referring to believers who have not been truly taken over by the Holy Spirit. They are very much of the World still. The "old man" the old nature, the fallen nature still rules in them. They are not "spiritual" or under full control of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit wants to raise up the "new man," the Holy Ghost man, that person who has a nature after the heart of God. **In 1st Corinthians 9:11 this word is used to refer to "material" things, as opposed to "spiritual" things. For example money is "carnal," while heavenly blessings are "spiritual."

"carnal mind"....this phrase can be found in Romans 8:7. Our physical body reverts to soil or earth. The body was a perfect creation. But when Adam sinned death invaded the human body. All bodies begin to die from the moment of birth. The body loses ground until death overtakes it. Then it decomposes into soil, earth, dust. God told Adam that the ground, the Earth, the dust, if you will, was cursed because Adam's sin brought evil side-effects into the creation of God. Our minds are made of dust. As a result the mind's natural tendency is to operate along the lines of the curse that is upon the dust. It takes the touch of the Holy Ghost to lift the mind from it's cursed rut. We need to operate with the mind of Christ and retreat from the "carnal mind" set. The Holy Spirit is the only ONE who can reverse this cursed operation. Otherwise we are often spiritually deceived by the mind's cursed logic.

carriages....in the New Testament this word only appears in Acts 21:15. It does not mean anything remotely having to do with horses and carriages. Here the word refers to "carry-along" items. In other words Paul and his companions packed their bags, picked up the load and carried all that stuff to the next stop.

cast....thrown, throw, threw.

castaway....one who has backslidden far enough to have thrown themselves into the trash can that is about to be dumped into Hell. But God can reach one in this condition if they will repent and call upon the name of Jesus.

Castor and Pollux....In Acts 28:11 it is reported that the ship Paul and his guards took from Malta had the sign or figure head of Castor and Pollux. They were the mythological twin brothers who supposedly protected sailors because they had power over the winds.

caterpiller....caterpillar

cauls....in Isaiah 3:18 the KJV translators had difficulty translating Hebrew words for ancient, Hebrew women's clothing accessories. Probably the best translation would be "head bands."

cedar(s)....an evergreen tree found in the mountains of Lebanon. The wood was imported to Israel. The large logs were tied together to form huge rafts that were moved by sea from Lebanon to Israel. The wood was used for the masts of ships. Solomon used massive amounts in the temple and other buildings. This wood is superior in quality, aromatic (marvelous odor), useful for shingles and carvings. It was used in Jewish Temple rituals as well. The Cedars of Lebanon are a powerful Biblical symbol of strength.

Cenchrea....a variant spelling of Cenchreae. This was a seaport city seven miles East of the city of Corinth.

Cenchreae....the spelling found in Romans 16:1 of a seaport city seven miles East of the city of Corinth.

centurion....an officer in the Roman military with about a hundred soldiers under his command.

Cesar....a KJV spelling of Caesar. See Caesar.

chaff....the useless and very combustible covering over grains, like the thin papery stuff on a peanut between the nut and the shell. The chaff was removed from grain in ancient times by throwing the grain up into the air with a winnowing fork. The wind would blow the light chaff away allowing the pure and cleaned kernels to fall back into the grain pile.

Chaldaeans....KJV spelling of "Chaldeans" who were a people who lived in what today is Southern Iraq. Long after Abraham, in Daniel's period, during the last dynasty of the Babylonians, 626 to 539 b.c., the word Chaldeans referred to the Babylonians themselves.

chambering....the old KJV word for what today is called "an arrangement," or "shacking up," people sleeping together without the benefit of marriage, "one night stands."

chamberlain....in the old testament a servant who had access to the bed chambers of kings and queens. This person was in that case often a eunuch. *In the New Testament in Romans 16:23 the word is used referring to a city official, probably meaning what we would call a commissioner or bureaucrat, or a city council member.

Chanaan....KJV spelling of Canaan, the homeland of God's people the Jews. See Canaan.

Charchemish....KJV spelling of Carchemish. See Carchemish.

charged....very strongly demanded. Jesus "charged" them not to tell who he was.

charity....love. In 1611 this word had less to do with giving money or clothes to the poor!! "Charity" was the agape love, the highest form of love from God. When you showed Christian "charity" you were showing unconditional love. You were loving your enemy, the one who persecuted you, the one who hated you.

charitably....in Romans 14:15 we find this word. It also has nothing whatsoever to do with giving to a rescue mission or to an agency that takes care of the poor. Like "charity," above, it means with the love of God, the highest form of agape love. Paul is implying that we ought to show godly love even in what we eat. If a brother feels that eating meat is unholy and that you must be a vegetarian to be a devout Christian, then you should avoid eating meat in front of him. You should avoid it because you love the brother too much to cause him to stumble and lose his faith, even though his faith may be based on some mistaken view.

Charran....this is a KJV New Testament spelling of Haran, a city in North Mesopotamia, now part of Turkey, where Abraham lived in his earlier days.

chastened....disciplined.

chastise....to punish even with blows.

Chemarims....idolatrous priests.

Cherethites....some very loyal members of David's personal army. They probably had Cretan ancestry and had settled with the Philistines on the coast. David must have come in contact with them through his Philistine contacts. In later years two prophets condemned them. It is not known if they were still separate from the Philistines or part of them.

cherubims....a supernatural angelic being whose likeness was given to Moses to be added to design of the Ark of the Covenant. These beings guarded the Garden of Eden preventing Adam from returning. Also these beings appear in Ezekiel's visions of the glory realm around the throne of God.

Chios....a rough and mountainous island in the central Eastern Aegean Sea.

Chisleu....the ninth month in the Hebrew calendar.

Chorazin....an elite city two miles North of Capernaum, built on the hills overlooking Capernaum. The general area is near the North West corner of Lake Galilee.

Christ....from the Greek word "Christos" meaning anointed one. Remember, the New Testament was written originally in Greek and the translators wanted to bring that name to us. They could have translated Christos as Messiah which is the Hebrew equivalent.

church....this word should NEVER, EVER be understood as a building or an organization or an institution. The church is the "called out ones," those who have responded to the call of Jesus and are now part of HIS family. The church is Jesus' family, an organism. The "organization" called the church may or may not have those in its ranks who are in Jesus' forever family. At its best the church organization is merely the visible part of the church, the tip of the iceberg you might say. So when you see a worship building or an organizational symbol remember that such things are "add-ons" that we human beings seem to be unable to get along without. We humans seem to be addicted to institutionalize and organize everything we touch. Our meddling never brings life. Only the Lord brings life. The real church of Jesus Christ operates in a realm that is above anything you can form in brick or jot down on paper. **Note: Here is an instance where I take a position that the KJV translators would have me thrown in prison for. They were strong believers in institutionalization. But, here I choose to defer with them because I have learned what Jesus and the Bible writers meant by the word "church." The reason I know is because I understand the Greek word, "ekklesia," that the KJV translators replaced with "church." "Ekklesia" means the "called out ones," called out from the World into Christ Jesus. You can see right away that the emphasis that Jesus and His apostles understood was different. They were looking for those whom God called out of the World into Christ Jesus. Do you see the difference? It isn't what you joined up with...it is what you were "called out from" by God Almighty.

churl....one of lowest rank, ill-bred, a miser, a very negative term!

ciel....used to translate Hebrew words that mean "cover" and "panel."

cieled....This word is found in four places in the Old Testament. It means paneled and also it can refer to a house having a paneled ceiling. In Haggai 1:4 the prophet gets after the people who have returned from Babylon and have built "cieled" homes while God's temple is still in ruins.

Cilicia....a Roman province located in the Northeast corner of the Mediterranean. The long pointing finger of land on the Island of Cyprus points directly at it. This province is where Saint Paul's home city of Tarsus was located.

circumcise....every Hebrew male child received a minor surgery on the eighth day of their life from the priest: circumcision. The priest would cut off the child's foreskin that covers the end of the male organ. This became a physical mark that the man-child was a member of God's holy people. From this physical ceremony God was able to begin to get across to HIS people that what HE really desired was a mark upon their heart. He wanted their hearts marked or circumcised, the cutting off of the fallen, fleshly nature. God was trying to get the concept of HOLINESS and PURITY into the understanding of HIS people. And HE had to begin with this simple physical ceremonial marking.

circumcision....In the New Testament Saint Paul speaks of "the circumcision." He is using this term to refer to legalistic Jewish Christians who believe that one must still follow all the Jewish laws plus believe in Jesus to be saved. Paul taught that Gentiles need not become Jews. They need not have the surgery on their physical body. But all followers of Christ need spiritual surgery, the circumcision of the heart. **At other times Paul uses the word "circumcision" simply to mean Jews in general, and "uncircumcision" to mean Gentiles in general. See Romans 3:30. See circumcise above for more background.

circumspectly....exactly, carefully. You can see this word in Ephesians 5:15.

clamour....clamor

clamorous....this word is found only once in the KJV Bible. It is in Proverbs 9:13. It means loud, noisy, in an uproar, disquieted, boisterous, or to be in great commotion.

Clauda....KJV spelling of "Cauda." This is a small island about 20 miles South of the island of Crete. Today that little island is called Gaudos or Gozzo.

Claudius....Claudius Caesar, the Caesar mentioned in Acts 18:2. See Caesar above.

clave....this word is a past tense of "cleave" below.

cleave....this word has two very different meanings in the KJV. You have to understand the context to know which one. The first meaning is to cut, and or separate. The second meaning is to stick close, hang on to, as in "they cleave to each other."

cleaveth....in Luke 10:11 this word refers to the dust of that city that "sticks" on their shoes.

cloak....an outer garment to keep out the weather. Jesus uses the word "cloak" to describe a covering used by some to hide their sins. He says that HIS coming has removed this "cloak," this covering that hid sins. See John 15:22.

cloven....divided, parted, split.

Cnidus....a port city on the tip of a long finger of land thrust out into the Aegean Sea on the Southwester corner of what is now Turkey. To locate it find the island of Rhodes and then just to the Northwest of that Island is the long finger of land on which Cnidus resided.

cock....a rooster.

cockatrice....this word is definitely a KJV word. It represented a frightening, mythical serpent creature spoken of in 1611. Some believe the word is a corruption of the word "crocodile." The KJV translators used this word in translating Jewish meaning having to do with a very deadly viper or snake. This word is only found three places in the KJV Bible, and only in the book of Isaiah.

cockcrowing....early in the morning when roosters begin to crow.

colour....in Acts 27:30 this word means pretense or pretending.

colour....today we spell this word "color."

Colossae....The New Testament book of Colossians was written by Saint Paul to the church in this city. What little remains of Colossae are to be found in modern day Turkey. It was located about 112 miles, airline, due East of Ephesus. (Ephesus was located near modern day Selcuk, near the coast of Western Turkey.) Colossae was 80 miles, airline, North of the Mediterraean Sea. A Turkish tourism site reports that Colossae is 15.53 miles East of Denizli Province and 1.25 miles North of Honaz District. Eight miles West of Colossae was where the city of Laodicea was located. About eight miles Northwest of Colossae, and on the opposite, North bank of the Lycus River, was the city of Hieropolis. Colossae was in the Roman province of Phrygia in what is called Asia Minor. It was located in the Lycus River valley. That river today is called Curuksucay, a part of the Maeander River system that runs to the West. The city became extinct about 700 A.D., later used as a rock quarry. There are few visible ruins. Not much archeological digging has been reported at the former site of Colossae.

comeliness....beauty, grandeur, majesty.

comely....beautiful, good looking, handsome, graceful.

cometh....comes.

Comforter....the name Jesus used to speak of the Holy Spirit. The actual Greek word Jesus used means "One who comes beside." The precious Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost comes along side to comfort us and aid us. He is God on Earth today. He is the one who is full of power. He is the carrier. See Holy Ghost.

commend....this word appears in Romans 16:1 where Paul calls attention or honors certain key workers, indicating his approval of their work.

commendeth....to commit, to deliver, to entrust, or even to put into the care of another.

commotions....violent movements, disorders, tumults.

communicate....to share and/or participate together. In 1611 this word did not have very much to do with what we would call telecommunications, or communication. The reason for this is, of course, because such things didn't exist back then, with the exception of postal mail, or courier carried notes. In 1611 the word "communicate" had more to do with sharing an offering of money, or ministering food to someone rather than writing them a letter or talking to them.

companied....this word appears only once in the KJV in Acts 1:21. The closest word to it today would be the word "accompanied." Peter is suggesting that Judas' replacement should, in his opinion, be someone who had "accompanied" the remaining eleven disciples all through the ministry of Jesus.

company....in 1st Corinthians 5:9 it means "to associate."

compass....a circular boundary, to surround. **Also can mean cross over, traverse, travel. In Acts 28:13 the expression "fetched a compass" means set sail.

compassed....encircled, circled.

compassion....feeling another's suffering with a desire to help that one, having sympathy, feeling deeply for another's misery.

conceits....in Romans 11:25 this word means "imaginations, perceptions."

concision....In Philippians 3:2 Saint Paul uses this word to refer to a group of false teachers. He refers to the false teachers as "the concision." They taught that one must also follow Jewish ceremonial laws (such as circumcision for men) in order to follow Christ. In other words, these false teachers believed that you must convert to Judiasm to receive Jesus, because Jesus was a Jew. But Paul taught that Gentiles do not have to become Jews to receive Jesus. By calling the false teachers "the concision," he was calling them "mutilators of the human body." That gives you an idea of just how upset Paul was with this false doctrine. Paul knew that the physical marking of circumcision, taught in the Old Testament, was a type or shadow of the marking of our spirit that is essential. Physical mutilation or circumcision was a sign that aided Jews to understand purity and being devoted to God. But now, THAT sign is performed internally by the Holy Spirit, in the believer's spirit. Remember, many things start out in the natural realm first (the physical world) and then proceed to the spiritual realm. God begins in the natural to teach us the supernatural. Circumcision is still a very common surgery. But for Christians it should not be a spiritual activity. Gentiles circumcise their male babies for custom or health reasons. Jews still circumcise for spritual reason, and justly so because circumcision is still a part of the Jewish religion.

concluded....enclosed, boxed off, locked in, fenced in..

concourse....gathering, meeting.

concupiscence....In Romans 7:8 and Colossians 3:5 it means "covetousness." In 1st Thessalonians 4:5 it means "sexual lust." Generally this word means "longing, desire, yearning." Therefore "evil concupiscence" in Colossians 3:5 is wicked longing.

condemnation....judgment that has been handed down.

condemneth....hands down judgment.

condescend....let oneself down from, to descend voluntarily.

confederacy....this word only appears in two verses in the Bible. In Isaiah 8:12 it means a "conspiracy," an unholy or unlawful alliance. In Obadiah 1:7 the word means an "alliance."

confirm....this word found in 1st Corinthians 1:8 means to establish or strengthen.

conformable....this appears in Philippians 3:10 in the phrase "made conformable." That two word phrase is used to translate a single Greek word that means "formed together like unto..."

confound....confuse, bewilder.

confounded....confused, bewildered.

conscience....an ability, if undamaged, in every person to sense what is good and what is evil.

consent....agreement, one mind, alike.

considerest....think upon, analyze.

consolation....comfort, that which brings comfort and solace.

"consolation of Israel"....in Luke 2:25 Simeon is looking for the "consolation of Israel" which literally means the comfort of Israel...but this is a phrase which refers to the coming of Messiah, the anointed one, the Christ. Simeon knew that the comfort of Israel could only come through the Messiah.

consorted....associated, met with.

constrained....compelled.

constraineth....this word is only found twice in the Bible, in Job 32:18 and Second Corinthians 5:14. In both places it means pressed in like one might be pressed in when moving in a huge crowd. This reminds me of exiting out of a huge baseball stadium and being pressed by people, in the thousands, pressing from all sides. I was forced to move by the movement of the crowd!

consumption....in Isaiah 10:22 this word is referring to total and utter eradication and removal.

contemn....to scorn, despise, disdain.

contended....disputed, argued, disagreed.

contention(s)....disagreement(s), difference(s).

contentious....quarrelsome, perverse.

contrariwise....today we would replace this word with the phrase, "on the contrary." Or we might use the word "instead" or "but rather."

contrary....In the book of Leviticus "contrary" means "a hostile encounter." In Ezekiel it is used to translate a word that means "reverse" and "perversion." In Matthew and Mark it means "opposite." And in the rest of the New Testament the meaning is generally "opposite" or "against."

convenient....fit, fitting, suitable, appropriate, opportune, proper. In Proverbs 30:8 the KJV translators used "convenient" to translate a word that means "allotment" or "apportioned."

conversation....here is a word that in 1611 meant something very different than it does today. Back then the word was used to refer to a person's "way of living or way of life, their behavior." Of course today the word means dialog, people speaking to each other.

converted....turned around, changed, turned back again, returned.

conveyed....transferred, carried, moved.

Coos....KJV spelling of Cos. This was an island with a city that was also named Cos. It was located in the Aegean Sea just off the Southwest corner of what is now Turkey. A peninsula of Turkey sticks out almost to it.

corban....a gift consecrated to God for religious purposes. Once given the gift may not be used for any other purpose. Jesus criticized the Pharisees trick of allowing adult children to neglect their aged parents, even letting the parents fall into poverty. The Pharisees allowed the children to say that whatever they would have given the parents is a gift to the Lord and therefore it is corban and the parents will have to go without. Jesus indicated this was a very wicked religious trick and displeasing to God.

Corinth....the most important city on the Isthmus of Corinth, also the capital of the province of Achaia. Paul ministered here and a church was formed.

corn....In 1611 sweet corn ears or "corn on the cob" was unknown to Europeans! Native tribes in the Americas were the only human beings who knew anything about such a plant. In fact some history records that white settlers didn't get their first sweet ear-corn in America until the Indians introduced it to them as late as 1779. Some traditions indicate other dates. But the important fact is that when the KJV tells us in Luke that Jesus and his disciples went through corn fields that we all understand that in 1611 the word "corn" meant "grain," or "head of grain" (like a wheat head), or it could mean grain used as seed for planting. Therefore in your imagination please visualize Jesus and His disciples in a field of wheat and not in a Nebraska corn field.

cornet....this is a musical instrument. For some reason the KJV translators used this word most often for the shofar or rams horn. In Second Samuel 6:5 some kind of rattling instrument they call a cornet. The important thing is that what we call a cornet today (a small trumpet with three valves) is not what was used in Biblical times.

corruptible....that which decays, rusts, rots, decomposes, dissolves away, ages.

counselour....counselor.

countenance....the face, or the facial expression or look, the appearance.

course....Levite priests were divided up into sections each called a "course." These groups were like platoons or squadrons in the military. covenant....a binding agreement usually between God and man.

covert....a covering or a covering place, a place of shelter.

covet....desiring that which is another's possession.

craftiness....Today this word is associated with someone who has a gift to decorate, quilt, embroider, or is handy with a glue gun. But in 1611 this word had an entirely different meaning: deception, trickery, reasoning that is sound in appearance only, but in reality is totally or partially false.

craved....desired.

Crete....the next large Island 340 miles West of the island of Cyprus.

crew....old KJV past tense of "crow," as a rooster crows. "Then the cock crew..."

crimson....a bright red color used to dye cloth obtained from an insect. The word "scarlet" is used in conjunction with "crimson." They seem to be two words that mean about the same thing in both English and Hebrew. See "scarlet." See Isaiah 1:18.

"crisping pins"....Frankly, I haven't been able to find out, thus far, what the KJV translators meant by this phrase in Isaiah 3:22. However, I have found out what the Hebrew they were trying to translate means. They were translating Hebrew words for lady's hand bags or purses, or at least something close to that. The KJV translators sometimes had trouble translating words referring to Old Testament lady's accessories and clothing items. I believe that problem has existed and will exist for all time. I can't keep up with all the names for all the different things ladies wear and carry these days myself.

crucify, crucification....a unique form of capital punishment invented by the Romans. The condemned person was nailed to a heavy wooden cross and left in the open weather to die a slow death. The Romans were known to line highways with people dying on crosses as a teaching tool. Their form of education made some obey the rule of law. Death on the cross often took several days or a week. Death came from dehydration, blood loss, suffocation. This is why the Roman commander at the cross of Jesus was so amazed and believed, for Jesus gave up HIS life willingly. Jesus died at the moment HE chose, not the moment that nature chose.

cubit....about 18 inches.

cumbered....overloaded, over burdened.

cumbereth....weighs down, loads, steals strength from. This word is used in reference to a fig tree that produces no figs but loads down or wastes the soil it is planted in. See Luke 13:7.

cummin....a plant related to carrots that produces an aromatic seed used in cooking, pickling and the making of curry powder. The Pharisees required that one out of every ten seeds be tithed to the Lord.

Cushan....another name for Midian. Moses' wife was a Midian and she is referred to as a Cushite.

Cyprus....the island located in the Northeast corner of the Mediterranean Sea.

Cyrene....a city on the North coast of Africa in what is now Libya. The city is an archaeological site today.

Cyreneius....the KJV spelling of Quirinius. By the way, this passage of Scripture, in Luke 2:1 and following, has been pointed to by those who are sceptical of the Bible's historical accuracy. The skeptics say there was no census as Luke reports. You can study about this elsewhere. But don't take the arguments of the skeptics too seriously. The Bible has "scooped" secular history again and again. Modern archaeology has discovered so many things correct in the Bible historically. These were all things that skeptics questioned. The skeptics have been proved wrong again and again by recent archaeology. Instead read Josh McDowell's works, like Evidence that Demands a Verdict and More than a Carpenter. Don't let those spreaders of doubt cause you to doubt. The Bible is the most historically accurate book of the ancient World. That is why these skeptics keep trying to put it down. They just can't accept that a book of miracles could be for real.

Dalmanutha....see Magdala.

Damascus....an important crossroads city located 64 miles airline Northeast of the center of Lake Galilee. Today it is the capital of Syria. It has often been a strategic point of control of trade and dominance. Although it is totally a Muslim place today, in the first century it had thriving Jewish and Christian communities.

Dalmatia....This is a geographic region which was contained within and along the coast of the Roman province of Illyricum. The Dalmations were a difficult people for the Romans to control. They rebelled at times. On today's maps you can see where Dalmatia was by first finding Italy. Next locate Rome. Then run your finger due East across Italy and across the finger of the Mediterranean Sea that reaches up between Italy and Greece (The Adriatica Sea). When your finger touches the next land mass East of Italy and Rome, you will be touching what was Dalmatia. Today Dalmatia runs up and down the coast line of modern Croatia.

damnation....condemned to endless punishment first to Hell and then all those in that place will be finally judged at the throne of God and cast into the most horrible Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire seems to be a universe sized place of burning, so endless that the millions of souls in that place may never cross paths.

damsel....a young girl or young woman of nobility.

Day, (that day)....the expression "that day" is a prophetic phrase that usually is referring to the end times when Israel will enter into her greatest period of all. "That day" will be a day of great birth pangs and upheaval and trials followed by the time when Messiah, Christ Jesus, will return to reign, setting up HIS kingdom on Earth.

dayspring....the light springing up in the east, the dawning. Zacharias (Zechariah, John the Baptists father) speaks these words under the prophetic power of the Holy Spirit in Luke 1:78. The Holy Spirit speaks through him that they have experienced the "dayspring from on high." That can only mean that Almighty God had sent the dawning, the light springing from the Eastern skies of Heaven itself to them and to us. God the Father, God the Son Jesus and God the Holy Ghost are that dayspring that can enter the life of the one who believes and trusts in the Name of Jesus.

deacon....attendant, helper.

dearth....scarcity, lack, famine.

debate(s)....quarrel, wrangling.

Decapolis....a region on the East side of Lake Galilee, for the most part, and running from Damascus in the North to a city named Philadelphia (not to be confused with Philadelphia in the Book of Revelation) in the South. Hippos and Gadera were two of these cities located quite close to the Eastern Shore of Galilee. The ten were non-Jewish cities filled with immigrants of Greek and Mediterranean ancestry. They were very loyal to Rome and not in political unity with the Jews, definitely Gentile areas.

deceive....to mislead, to make others believe something that is not true.

decree....generally, a sweeping ruling from the lips of a king or governor that is written and sent throughout the domain of that leader informing or ordering their subjects to do, or to obey, or to take serious note of something.

debase....to reduce to a lower level of character or dignity.

debts....in the prayer that Jesus taught HIS disciples to pray "debts" and "trespasses" refer to our sins.

decease....death.

deceitfulness....tendency to mislead.

deceivableness....You can find this word in 2nd Thessalonians 2:10. Today we would substitute the word "delusion."

Dedication, Feast of....this feast is mentioned in John 10:22. It is also known as the Feast of Lights. But we know it today as the famous Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. It has it's beginnings in 165 b.c. when Judas Maccabeus rededicated the temple following the Greek desecration. Specifically it memorializes the small amount of oil that miraculously continued to burn for many days in the temple until a new supply could be obtained.

defamed....slandered, attacked the reputation of, spoken evil against, spread lies concerning the honor of.

defile....to make filthy, to pollute, to make impure, to debauch, to adulterate.

defraud....cheat, deceive, rob, dupe.

deliver....to save, to rescue, to set free.

Deliverer....in Romans 11:26 this word is referring to Jesus Christ.

denieth....denies.

Derbe....is only a mound today. The best way to find it is to find the most Western point of the Island of Cyprus and to measure due North 160 miles and then East about 20 miles. This location today is in the country of Turkey.

derided....ridiculed, made fun of, mocked.

desolation....nothingness, ravaged to nothing, uselessness, done for.

despised....looked down upon, scorned, distained, rejected.

despisest....to look down upon, to scorn, to disdain.

despite....this word, used as a noun, appears only in Ezekiel 25:6 and in Hebrews 10:29. It can mean insult, hatred, malice, shame, evilness, wrongness, terrible things done unto a pure one or a pure thing.

despitefully....maliciously.

destitute....wanting, not having or possessing, lacking.

Devil....another name for the leader of fallen angels, Satan, Lucifer, the enemy, the Prince of the power of the air, Beelzebub, the Serpent.

devils....demons or fallen angels that fell with Satan from Heaven and now serve Satan in the working of evil activity.

devourer....Malachi 3:11 referring to bugs, blight, plant diseases. In our day it would mean anything that eats up your resources and even attacks your family. The Devil is a devourer!

devout....holy, a person devoted totally to the Lord.

diddest....did.

digged....in Isaiah 5:6 this word is used in regard to a vineyard. Today we would say "cultivated," "hoed," and/or "weeded."

diligence....constant focus on the business at hand, careful thought and preparation and work.

discerning....discriminating, knowing.

disciples....the name given to followers of Jesus, John, the Pharisees or any teacher. They put themselves under the teacher's discipline. They do more than learn. They totally submit to their teacher. They surrender in total commitment. They truly "follow" that teacher and live as he lives and walk as he walks.

discover....often this word means to expose, to make bare, to strip off ones clothing. See Isaiah 3:17 where the Lord inspires the prophet to foretell that the wicked women will be humiliated by having their clothes taken from them, apparently by enemies. This is a sad, but true occurrence in human history. During wars women are often terribly mis-treated.

discretion....being careful about what one says or does.

disorderly....this word is used to translate two words. One means simply to act improperly in general. The second word means to act improperly in a wrong moral way.

dispensation....St. Paul is the only person in the Bible who uses the Greek word in this manner that has been translated by the KJV translators as "dispensation." We really need help today understanding "dispensation," because in the KJV it has nothing at all to do with a modern doctrine called "dispensationalism." No this word in the KJV means "administration." So this is one of those words that can really throw you, if you accidently put some modern day definition on it.

dispersed....in John 7:35 this word is used to speak of the Diaspora. The Diaspora were the Jews that had been dispersed throughout the known world of that day. Many of these Jews traveled to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles and other feasts, annually. They and their ancestors were dispersed about the World of that day due to the Assyrian, Babylonian and other upheavals that befell Israel.

disputation....controversial discussion and reasoning. **You may want to also read "doubtful disputations" below.

disputing....In Acts 19:8 Dr. Luke tells us that Saint Paul was in the Jewish synagogue "disputing." But we also know that Paul lists "debate" in Romans 1:29 as one of the terrible evils and yes even a sin. So how are we to understand this since today a dispute and a debate are so similar?? The answer lies in the change of meaning in words since 1611. One of the meanings of "disputing" in 1611 was simply "discussion and reasoning." Today the word "dispute" tends to mean an argument more than a discussion. However, as you will read just below that the KJV plural word "disputings" can at times mean the evil process of "debate." So it is very important that we believers have the help of the Holy Spirit as we read the Bible. Remember, debating is evil while discussion and reasoning are okay. A discussion can quickly turn into a debate. This is why you must be very careful when you speak with people who have different beliefs. You must not debate with them. You may tell them what you believe and why you believe it...but don't carry the discussion beyond that.

disputings....considerations, debates, meddlesomeness.

dissembled....In the Old Testament this word is used to translate a word that means "deceived." In Galatians 2:13 "dissembled" is used to translate a word that means "to vacillate, to reel, or to stray."

dissension....strong objections.

dissimulation....In Romans 12:9 this word is used to translate a word that means "insincerity." In Galatians 2:13 this word is used to translate a word that means "deceit or hypocrisy."

divers....this KJV word can have two meanings. First it sometimes directly translates to our word "diverse." Secondly, it can mean simply "many." See Mark 8:3.

diversities....1st Corinthians 12:6 uses this word in a way that we would use the word "varieties."

diviners....those who work in divination. Divination is a demonic practice strictly forbidden by the Bible. Reading tea leaves or practicing astrology are two forms of divination. See "soothsayer."

doctors....in Luke 2:46 this means great teachers, or what we might call doctors of religion or theology.

doctrine....teachings, body of beliefs, truth.

doest....do.

doleful....sad, mournful.

dominions....rulers, masters.

doth....does.

doting....to be sick or ill. This word appears in 1st Timothy 6:4. It speaks there of "...doting about questions and strifes of words..." This use of the word "doting," is speaking about someone who has a sick or morbid interest in questions that are controversial.

"doubtful disputations"....this phrase is found in Romans 14:1. It means "uncertain arguments and discussions." Basically this verse is saying don't argue with new or weak Christians about matters that are not clearly spoken about in the Word of God. Many of these matters are for the Holy Spirit to deal with in each believer in detail. For example, I once knew a preacher whom I saw mowing his lawn on Sunday. I personally am convicted about doing that. For me to argue with that man over that matter would be breaking the Word of God! That is between him and the Holy Spirit. Now, if I had seen him caressing his neighbor's wife that would be another matter that I might need to take up.

drag....in fishing a net dragged along the bottom of a river or lake.

dragons....[see Micah 1:8] a hideous sea or land animal. Could be a whale, a crocodile or large lizard. We don't know.

draught....this word in the KJV has two different meanings. It is used meaning "catch of fish" as when the disciples let down their nets. And it is used by Jesus in reference to those things that go into the belly do not defile because they are cast into the draught. Here the word is used to mean "the outhouse, the privy, literally "the place of sitting."

drave....drove.

dresser....a vineyard worker, a vine dresser, one who prunes and routes the grape vines.

dropsy....edema or swelling in the legs and/or feet caused by excessive water in the tissues. In Jesus' day this condition was thought to be a disease in and of itself. In reality this is a symptom of other infirmities. Those who suffer blood clot, leg infection, congestive heart failure, damaged veins, starvation, prolonged standing, overweight, increased age, injury to the leg and other problems may suffer with this condition.

dross....garbage, refuse, ugly slag that gathers on molten metals. In Isaiah 1:22 it speaks of silver becoming dross. Silver is notorious for how it easily and quickly oxidizes producing an ugly black coating. If silver is not properly cared for it quickly oxidizes

drunken....drank (past tense of drink).

Drusilla....the Jewish wife of Felix (see Felix). Drusilla was from the famous Herod family. She was born about 38 a.d. She had been married to Azizus, King of Emesa. Felix saw her and desired her to be his wife. He sent a messenger who persuaded her to violate Jewish law and marry Felix. They had a son who died in the 79 a.d. eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy.

dumb....not able to speak words. In KJV "dumb" has nothing to do with one's IQ. A person who is dumb has had their tongue immobilized, removed, may have had a stroke or they were born unable to properly move their tongue because they are "tongue-tied," that is the tongue is more tightly fastened at the bottom of the mouth making it impossible to talk. Sometimes the lack of speech is caused by demonic activity.

dung....human or animal manure.

dunghill....a manure pile, or a place where garbage, including dung, is taken.

dureth....endureth, endures.

durst....dared.

earnest....this word is used by Saint Paul to refer to the Holy Spirit as God's down payment, or security pledge to us of greater things to come. Also this word is used in the more common meaning of a strong desire or longing. Therefore it is important to check the context of the verse in which you find this word.

earrings....In Isaiah 3:20 the KJV translators had difficulty translating a Hebrew word for a particular women's accessory item. They translated it "earrings," when in fact the Hebrew word is referring to "amulets." An amulet is a charm worn as a necklace. It has occult meaning. It is a pagan and unholy thing in God's sight.

edification....the process of building up someone or even yourself. This does NOT mean self glory...it means praying, praying in the heavenly language (See Jude 1:20) reading the Bible, seeking God, quoting memorized Scriptures, praising and giving glory to the Lord, etc.

edify....build up, strengthen.

Edom....A people and nation on the South East corner of the Dead Sea. These peoples were descendents of Esau, Jacob's twin brother. There was much fighting and bad feeling between Israel and Edom.

effectual....effective, efficient, active, operative.

effectually....to be effective, to be efficient, to work.

effeminate....1st Corinthians 6:9 uses this word in the KJV. It is the best the KJV translators could do with a Greek word that speaks of young boys forced into homosexual acts with adult men.

Ekron....The most northern of the five main cities of the Philistines. It was nine miles to the east of the Mediterranean Sea, close to the start of the Valley of Sorek, on the way towards Jerusalem.

Elamites....a people from the Nation of Elam who were present at Pentecost. Their capital was Susa in what is today Iran.

elder....this word in the Greek means an older, mature man. And in the church of the first century an elder was a Godly, mature, gentleman-believer. The older "ordained" men were included in this grouping, but the title of "elder" did NOT exclude those who were not prophets, apostles, presbyters or deacons in the early church! The idea that when you call for the elders, that only licensed and ordained people respond is not Bible! It is unbiblical tradition that was created around 200 to 300 A.D. by a cooling church approaching the dark ages! And it is unfortunate that the term "elder" today is used, in some churches, to mean only preachers, missionaries, evangelists, prophets and others with ordinations and licenses! It is my personal feeling that in the first century church, elders were men that the Holy Spirit highlighted in the congregations. Then, when the Holy Spirit's governance of the church was grieved away, the church hierarchy took over the control of who was and who wasn't an elder. And finally the hierarchy formalized eldership, restraining the officially un-ordained in the pew from this position.

elect....in Romans 8:33 Paul speaks of "God's elect." This is referring to those whom God knew before the foundation of the World, whom HE chose or elected. Please read the definition of "predestinate" to understand more fully this complex concept.

"elect of God"....chosen of God. Found in Colossians 3:12.

election....the divine process that occurred before the foundation of the world when God chose those who would choose HIM. See "elect" above and "predestinate."

eleventh hour....5 P.M. in the late afternoon, early evening.

Elias....Elijah the prophet of Old Testament fame.

Eliseus....Elisha the prophet from the Old Testament.

emboldened....gave courage to, added boldness, encouraged.

Emmaus....a village mentioned by Luke 24:13. Luke tells us that the village is about seven and a half miles from Jerusalem. Archeologists are not certain which of four locations may be this village.

Emmor....this is a New Testament KJV spelling of "Hamor" in the Old Testament. See "Shechem" or "Hamor" for more info.

emulation....envy that causes someone to want to arise in competition to equal or surpass another. You can find this word in Romans 11:14. Paul was hoping to cause his fellow Jews to see what he had such that they would try to better him and in the process discover their Messiah. He would try almost anything to see his people, the Jews, saved.

emulations....in Galations 5:20 this word is used to translate a word that means jealousy or malice.

endeavour....endeavor

En-Dor....this was a city located in the tribal area of Manasseh. It was noteworthy because a witch, or medium resided there that King Saul wrongly consulted. Also Psalm 83 indicates that the battle Barak fought against the Canaanite confederacy ended there. En-Dor is located four miles from Mount Tabor.

"ends of the World"....1st Corinthians 10:11. This phrase means the final epic, the last days, the terminal period, the finale of World history.

endued....placed upon, clothed, covered with.

engrafted....implanted. This word is only found in James 1:21 where it speaks of the implanted Word of God. God wants to plant HIS Word within our very being. God's Word is far more than information. It is alive and God wants to graft it into our lifeless stump. HIS Word is so powerful that it will bring our dead stump to life and a new tree of righteousness will spring up by the power of the Word of God Almighty touching us.

enmity....hostility, hatred, strong opposition one to another.

enquire....KJV spelling of "inquire."

ensample(s)....example(s).

ensign....a signal, or a sign, possibly associated with a military activity.

entreat....to deal with. See Acts 7:6. *Also it can mean to ask earnestly, to beseech, to even pray or beg.

"shamefully entreated"....You can find this phrase in 1st Thessalonians 2:2. It means to spitefully or wickedly use or treat.

entreaty....earnest petition.

envieth....envies, has envy.

envying....having a discontent, anger or ill will toward another because of their supposed greater opportunity or possessions.

ephah....a unit of dry measure, about a half bushel.

Ephesus....a very large seaport city in the Roman province of Asia, today the West coast of Turkey. Paul ministered in this city for about three years. This city was such an important commercial, political and religious center that it certainly was a key to the spread of Christianity.

ephod....this word has two meanings. In some passages the word refers to an article worn about the shoulders of the priest. There simply is not enough information to fully suggest exactly what the ephod looked like when worn by the priests. In other scriptures the word "ephod" describes an image made of gold or other material and was worshiped or reverenced. The reader can tell by the passage whether or not the word is referring to a priestly piece of apparal or an object of worship.

Ephraim....the name of one of Joseph's sons. Joseph's tribe is split under the names of his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim, born in that order. But Joseph's father, Jacob, blesses Ephraim over Manasseh. Much later after Solomon, when the Kingdom splits the name of Ephraim is sometimes used to refer to the northern 10 tribes. The Tribe of Ephraim surpassed the tribe of Manasseh in size. **In Jesus' time there was a town by the name of Ephraim. One possible location for this town is four miles Northeast of Bethel. John tells us that Jesus went there after the authorities began to seek HIS life more vigorously.

Ephratah....a village perhaps absorbed by Bethlehem. Caleb's second wife was named Ephratah and his family lived in the Bethlehem area.

Epicureans....these were followers of a philosophy which was begun by a man named Epicurus. Epicurus migrated to Athens where his ideas became headquartered. In 306 b.c. his followers purchased him a house and garden in Athens where he taught until his death in 270 b.c. His philosophy was that one must get totally free from all religion. Even though the gods exist they live in a total happiness and calm and have no concern for mankind, nor any desire to help or hinder man. They are apart and man must seek for the joy of the gods without having any fear of them. Happiness and pleasure are the goal, however the happiness is internal. Epicurus did not believe in debauchery and drunkenness to find happiness. Instead one was to think of pleasant thoughts and memories. The Epicureans who listened to Saint Paul in Athens would have looked down upon him as some crazy religionist and especially Paul's teaching of the resurrection from the dead would have repulsed them. Life after death is stupidity to them and to them there is nothing to come back to life from. This is all there is right here on Earth now.

epistle....KJV word for a "letter," a handwritten communication.

equity....justice, impartiality.

erred....past tense of "err." See "err" above.

Esaias....KJV spelling of Isaiah the prophet.

eschew....This word only appears in 1st Peter 3:11, "eschew evil". It is used to translate a Greek word that means to shun or to decline. Peter reminds us that it is our job, as believers, to give evil the "cold shoulder," to turn away from it, to decline it, to run from it.

eschewed....This word only appears in Job 1:1. It is used to explain that Job "eschewed evil". The Hebrew word that "eschewed" is used to translate means "to turn away from."

escheweth....Found only in Job 1:8 and Job 2:3; used to translate a Hebrew word meaning "to turn away from."

espoused....similar to our word engaged. However, in Bible times an engagement was almost as strong an agreement as marriage, so strong that Joseph considered getting a divorce in order to break the engagement.

esteem....this word is used to translate three words in the original languages. It can mean to consider, to arrange or set in proper order, to regard or think about, or even plot.

esteemeth....in Romans 14:14 it means supposes, reasons, figures.

estranged....to be foreign or strange, or it can mean to treat someone as a foreigner.

eunuch(s)....in ancient societies where kings had many wives the rulers fostered a very abusive practice. In order to have servants that they could be sure would have no interest in carrying on secret relationships with their many wives they would surgically alter a corp of servants. These castrated servants would be assigned duties in the harem of wives. Jesus taught that some are born as eunuchs, in other words their male hormone levels are so low that they have no romantic interests.

Euroclydon....Northeaster, the name of a certain kind of storm. This the storm from which God saved Paul and 275 other people on their way to Italy in a ship. In Acts 27:14 this wonderful miracle is related.

even....sometimes the word "even" means evening. At other times it means "equal." You have to check the context.

eventide....evening.

exact....Luke quotes John the Baptist who tells the tax collectors (publicans) not to "exact" more than is appointed. This use of "exact" means "demand" or "charge."

exalt....to elevate in rank, power, dignity, to praise, to extol.

exceedingly....this word is used to translate well over a dozen original language words. I believe that it would be best just to give a general meaning here. This word generally means "great," to increase, totally disturb or change, over abundantly, beyond.

execute....to do or to operate something. For example the Bible has many occurrences of the phrase "execute judgment."

exhortation....motivational speaking, giving guidance and help. Not a sermon, but something close to a sermon.

exorcists....this word only appears in Acts 19:13. It refers to those who attempted to cast out fallen angels off and out of the lives of some who were under the powers of those fallen angels. They failed to free the people and indeed the evil powers used those possessed to terribly assault them. Exorcists are those who try to remove wrong spirits by means other than the true and pure power of the Holy Ghost.

experiment....test, proof, trial.

extortioner....one who by force or by pressure causes another to unwillingly give up that which they have.

expedient....fit and suitable to achieve a certain purpose.

expounded....explained, amplified, clarified.

eyeservice....Service designed to be seen, service that may well cease if the boss or supervisor is not looking on. This word is found in Ephesians 6:6.

fables....this word refers to "tall tales," or fictions and myths.

Fair Havens....a harbor on the South coast of Crete. This harbor is known today as Kalous Limionas.

fain....gladly.

faith....is trust, belief in Jesus, God's Son, that Jesus' death and resurrection fully pay the price of eternal life for any and all who receive Jesus as Saviour, who trust Jesus as Lord, who repent of and turn away from their sins to put their hand into Jesus' hand to walk with HIM. This miracle of faith usually happens when a person calls upon Jesus in prayer. After salvation faith is what the Christian exercises each day when they pray and KNOW that God hears and is working in their behalf, even though they may not see anything tangible immediately, they believe, or extend their faith, in God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit that God is working on whatever they have placed in God's hands. Hebrews 11:6 tells us that faith is absolutely mandatory, without it there is no hope. God will not move unless someone, somewhere is believing in HIM.

familiar spirits....those who work in the dark powers claim to communicate with the spirits of dead relatives and friends, thus the phrase "familiar spirits." In actuality some of these channelers are fakes. But there are those who do communicate with spirits, BUT are deceived as to what spirits they truly are!! Beware!! They are in actuality communicating with demonic entities that can easily impersonate anyone. There are human impersonaters who can make their voice sound so much like a famous person that they can fool many. If that is true in the natural how much easier for a powerful fallen angel to impersonate your relative. Thus the Bible strongly warns us to stay away from those who call up or claim to call up spirits of the departed.

famine....crop failures resulting in mass starvation.

fan....Matthew 3:12 states that the one (Jesus) who comes after John the Baptist has his "fan" in his hand and he will clear the threshing floor. The "fan" was a winnowing fork used to toss the grain into the air where the wind might blow the useless chaff off the grain and away. The chaff is very combustible and burns fast and hot. Left over chaff was burned.

fare....to pass, to move forward, to go forth. "Fare ye well" is a blessing meaning "may you go forward and do well."

fared....progressed, moved forward, lived.

farthing....is a small British coin worth one quarter of a British cent! In Matthew 5:26 where it speaks of the "uttermost farthing" we could translate that as "the last penny."

fashion....the form or appearance of something or someone. Don't be confused by todays meaning that has to do with popular clothing designs.

fathoms....plural of fathom. A fathom is six feet. It is used by sailors to determine the depth of water to prevent running the ship aground. Ten fathoms is 60 feet of water.

fatling(s)....young animal(s), lambs or kids, fattened to eat before they mature.

favour....favor.

feebleminded....You can find this word in 1st Thessalonians 5:14. This word is a case where most of us would need help in understanding the meaning. I personally thought this word was referring to those with mental conditions, or large learning disabilities, or dementia. But that is NOT the case. No, this word is used to translate a Greek word that means "timid" or "faint-hearted." I suppose this would include a person who has fear of crowds. And so the definition of this word was a big surprise.

feign....to pretend.

Felix....Felix Antonius was the Procurator of Judea from the year 52 a.d. to 60 a.d. Felix was in charge of Judea at the time of Saint Paul's arrest. He was recalled by Nero and barely missed punishment because of his governing methods. Some have thought that it was his errors that eventually led to the Jewish uprising that led to Rome's destruction of Jerusalem in 70 a.d. See Drusilla concerning his wife.

fellowship....this word has deep meaning to the Body of Christ, the people of God's church. The simple meaning of "fellowship" is "communion." In the 1970s and 1980s there was a movement in the church called the "commune movement" where believers lived communally. They lived in purity. This was not an immoral movement. But they shared food, living quarters, Bible study, and built relationships with God and each other. All this to say that the word "fellowship" is better defined by the Greek work behind it "koinonia." The Early Church in the Book of Acts was almost a "commune." Today "fellowship" in the church has a much deeper meaning than pot-luck supper and after church gatherings. "Fellowship" is family at the deepest spiritual level.

fervent....earnest.

Festus....Porcius Festus was procurator of Judea from about 60 to 62 a.d., following Felix who was recalled to Rome by Nero. Paul who had been in prison for two years in Caesarea was called before Festus, who was joined by King Agrippa.

figure....in Romans 5:14 the word "figure" means a type, or a shadow of, or a pattern of. Adam was a type or shadow or pattern of Jesus who was to come later. Adam failed, but Jesus Christ, the second Adam, succeeded in representing all mankind in a SAVING way. Adam succeeded in representing all mankind in a FALLEN way.

"finger of God"....In Luke 11:20 we find this expression. Jesus indicates that HE sets people free from devils by the "finger of God." God is a spirit. The "finger of God" must surely be the power of the Holy Ghost, or the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:38 tells us that Jesus was anointed by the Holy Ghost and power and went about healing and setting those free who were bound by the forces of darkness.

firebrand....piece of burning wood pulled out of a fire.

firkin....a unit of liquid measure; about ten gallons.

firmament....in Genesis this word is used to describe the expanse or visible arch of the sky. The ancient Hebrews thought of it as a polished screen, like a movie screen. That is where the Sun, Moon and stars appeared above.

firstfruit(s)....in the law of firstfruit the Jews were to tithe a tenth. But when that first orange appears on the tree and you are to tithe from that firstfruit how do you know what a tenth is going to be? You only have the first fruit, you only have the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. How do you know what you should tithe to the Lord? The answer is you tithe on what you hope to harvest. So the wise Jew would give a tenth of what he hoped to harvest, a generous firstfruits offering to the Lord. Notice in 2nd Chronicles 31:5 that they brought in the firstfruit tithe "abundantly." Jesus Christ was a firstfruits offering of God. See 1st Corinthians 15:23. Giving a firstfruits tithe is a gift of great faith that God will reward!

fishers....fisherman.

flagons....pitchers, usually for wine.

flay....to skin, to pull the skin from the bone.

flee....run away from, escape from, get away from.

flesh....when you run across this word in the KJV you will need to be careful how you understand it. At times it is referring to physical tissue (from man or beast). For example in Philippians 1:22 where Paul is saying that if he lives in his "flesh" or body it is the fruit of his labor, rather than to die and be with Christ. But in Romans 7:5 Paul uses the same word "flesh" to refer to something he had in the past, but in Christ does not have. He speaks of how he used to be in "the"flesh." When he wrote those words he was living in the same physical body he was in when he wrote the other Scripture. So, in the Romans 7:5 case Paul is refering to the fallen nature that came to us from Adam and Eve. He calls that "the flesh." Check carefully when you see the word "flesh."

flux....a flow. A bloody flux is a flow of blood.

foes....enemies.

folly....foolishness.

fool....in Matthew 5:22 (KJV) Jesus warns that anyone who calls his brother a "fool" will be in danger of Hell fire. The word translated "fool" in KJV here is a close relative to a word come to us from the Greek: moron. I think Jesus strongly advises that we stay far away from negative labels.

"foolish talking"....this phrase, found in Ephesians 5:4, translates a word that means "silly talk, buffoonery." This truth is covered in the definition of "jesting." See "jesting" below.

forasmuch....because, since, seeing that.

forbad....past tense of forbid. See forbid below.

forbad....today we spell it "forbade."

forbear....to refrain from or to avoid. Please see "forbearing" below to gain the wide set of meanings the KJV translators connected this word and it's relatives to.

forbearing....This particular word appears five times in the Bible, twice in the Old Testament and three times in Paul's letters. The KJV translators used it to translate four different words! In Proverbs 25:15 it is used to translate a Hebrew word for "nose," "nostril," "face," or "person." Basically that Scripture means that if you want to change the mind of a prince you must gently, but firmly stay "in his face" until he changes his mind. In Jeremiah 20:9 the word appears again. Here it is used to translate a Hebrew word meaning "to maintain." Jeremiah says that he tried to not prophecy for the Lord, because God's word was so poorly received and so rejected. But the prophetic word burned so strongly inside him that he could not "maintain" his silence. The Words of God burned so hot and heavy that they exploded forth, "forbearing" or maintaining silence would not work! In Ephesians 4:2 and Colossians 3:13 the word is used to translate a Greek word meaning "to put up with, to endure, to suffer with." Paul is inspired to tell us that we must endure the eccentricities, the weirdnesses of our brothers and sisters in Christ! Finally in Ephesians 6:9 the word is used to translate a Greek word that means "to slacken, to loosen." Paul is telling those who have slaves to slacken up on the threats and to loosen up from the harsh ways that worldly masters treated their slaves.

forbearance....patient restraint. God patiently waits for us to turn from sin giving us time to repent.

forbid....prohibit.

foreknew....in Romans 11:2 Paul tells us that God "foreknew" the Jews. That means that the Jewish people were totally understood and chosen by God before they ever existed in time. HE knew them before HE created the Earth and God chose them for a special work. Also, since the words "knew" and "know" in the Bible often mean intimacy, as in marital intimacy, this means God was married to HIS people, the Jews, before time began. Isn't God glorious!!

foreship....bow or front of the ship.

foreskin....the covering skin removed surgically on the eighth day of a male Jewish child's life by the priest in a process called circumcision.

foretell....predict, tell in advance, tell before it happens.

forgat....forgot.

forsake....abandon, give up, turn away from, surrender.

forsaken....from forsake, past tense.

forsook....from forsake, past tense plural.

fornication....is the KJV's translation of the Greek word "pornea," from which we get words like "pornographic." Basically fornication is sexual activity between two people who have not been united in a pure and holy, traditional, marriage union. Jesus says in Matthew 5:32 that fornication is the only sin that HE considers just cause for a righteous marriage partner to end the marriage through divorce. Jesus sees no other just cause for divorce. Otherwise marriage is for life. Adultery, incest, homosexuality and all other perverted sexual unions fit under the general category of "fornication." In more modern times the word "fornication" was given a more limited definition as pre-marital and extra marital sexual activity...but from the Bible point of view "fornication" is really any kind of illicit sexual activity.

fornicators....those who practice fornication. See "fornication" above.

forswear....to swear falsely.

forthwith....immediately, without delay, directly.

foretold....correctly spoken the facts of the event before the event ever happened.

forewarn....give a warning well in advance of the coming danger.

foul....unclean, evil, dirty, wicked.

fourfold....four times or the amount multiplied by four.

fowl(s)....bird(s).

fray....brawl, fight, combat.

fret....angry, worked up, worried. Also, oddly this word is used in Leviticus 13:55 to describe a hole in a garment caused by mildew. In Isaiah 8:21 it means "enraged" or greatly angered. Today the word seems more connected to "worry." But in the KJV it is more connected to anger and rage. Nevertheless "fret" is a negative and destructive emotion.

froward....perverse, wayward, unyielding, ungovernable, disobedient, cross, peevish.

fulfil....fulfill

fuller....as in fuller's soap in Malachi 3:2. The fuller was a person in past times who cleaned, whitened, shrunk and thickened cloth using heat, soap and moisture processes.

furbushed....today we spell it "furbished"

furlong....an English unit of measure equivalent to one eighth of a mile.

furnished....this word is used to translate five words in the original languages. It can mean to equip or properly set up. It can mean lift up. It can mean to arrange something properly. It can mean to complete or fulfill. And it can mean to spread, as in spreading a carpet.

Gadarenes....see "Gergesenes."

gainsay....deny, contradict, oppose.

gainsaying....denying, contradicting, opposing.

Galatia....a Roman Province in what is today central Turkey. This province was shaped something like the letter "s." It did not touch either the Black Sea on the North or the Mediterranean on the South. Pamphylia on the South and Bithynia and Pontus on the North kept it, though barely, from reaching the seas. The geographic center of this province was about 300 miles East of the West coast of Turkey and 150 miles North of the mid-southern coastline.

Galilaeans....persons who are residents or were residents of the areas around Lake Galilee.

Galilee....a region in the Northern part of Israel, during the New Testament period on the West side of Lake Galilee. The borders of that region can be approximated by placing the point of a compass in the center of the Lake and drawing a half circle with a varying radius of from 12 to 22 miles from below the South end of the Lake to a point above the North end.

gall....a bitter, poisonous herb. This word is used sometimes in place of the word "poison." Also the word "gall" is sometimes used to mean bitter. Matthew reports that gall was mixed in vinegar and offered to Jesus during the crucifixion process. Mark says the substance in the vinegar was myrrh, a narcotic pain killer. See Myrrh. Whatever was in that drugged drink Jesus refused to have any after he tasted it.

garner(s)....a storage place(s) for grain on the farm.

garnished....decorated, all ready to use.

gay....this word appears only once in the KJV, in James 2:3, where it is used to refer to a style of apparel or clothing. Because of recent modification of the meaning of the word "gay," and the attachment of that word to the homosexual lifestyle, I believe it is important to point out that the word "gay" had no such implication in 1611. The 1611 translators were attempting to translate a Greek word that meant: "radiant, magnificent in appearance or gorgeous." James was referring to those showing up in the fellowship of the church wearing expensive clothes getting more respect than those who have but rags to wear. James wanted the believers to know that God was deeply offended when we give more attention to the well dressed than we give to those who are poorly dressed. I believe that this also speaks to denominations that have a problem when worshipers do not wear suits and ties. There are still groups of believers who believe that once you get saved you need to switch to a suit and tie for church for men and special clothes for women also. They believe we must wear our best clothing to church because we are to give God our best looks and the best of everything. Giving God our best is a good idea, but God's Word points out that God does not consider our outside wrapping very seriously as long as we are modest and pure about what we wear. God does not appreciate us dressing in a way that is designed to allure romantic interests in HIS house. But other than that, fine clothing is NOT a requirement for the house of worship. In fact clothing of moderate worth probably makes it easier for the pour to enter and not feel put down by the wealth of some. I knew a very rich Christian who knew this truth and would drive a very small and conservative car to visit the poor and attend church, but in his garage he had a Cadillac luxury limousine which was used in his business. His great wealth was kept out of sight so he could visit the poor and bring help and aid, but not make the poor feel badly in the presence of great wealth. He would visit the sick in the hospitals and bring them gifts.

Gaza....a city and an area on the Southern Mediterranean coast of the Holy Land. Basically where Gaza is located today.

Geba....a town six miles north, northeast of Jerusalem. Today the town is called Jeba. It was in the tribal area of Benjamin.

Gebal....a Phoenician city built on the Mediterranean coast between what is today Tripoli and Beirut. Gebal exists today as Jebeil. Gebal was very influential because it was the doorway to the famous Cedars of Lebanon that were considered the greatest ship building material. As a result this city had an almost never ending demand to export Cedar. Business flourished.

gendereth....In the Old Testament it is used to mean: to transition, or cross into or move over. In the New Testament it is used to translate the meaning of regeneration or procreation.

Gentile(s)....any non-Jewish or non-Hebrew person(s).

Gennesaret....a very well watered and fruitful valley North West of Lake Galilee. ***Lake Galilee is called Lake Gennesaret in the Gospel of Luke.

Gergesenes....Gadarenes, people of the city of Gadara which was a Greek city, one of the ten cities of the Decapolis. This city was located just five miles from the South Eastern shore of Lake Galilee. And the Gadarene territory may well have extended right up to the Lake shore.

Gethsemane, Garden of....see the definition of Olives, Mount of.

ghost....KJV word for spirit. When a person died they gave up the ghost.

Gibeah....means hill or height in Hebrew. It is the name of the town of King Saul. It is located about three miles North of Jerusalem.

Gilead....originally a name for one branch of the tribe of Manasseh, a group called Gileadites. However, this word has come to be used in a much wider sense as you read the whole Bible. It is a territory in the Holy Land whose borders are not fully known today. The area believed to be Gilead is marked on the South by the Arnon river, the valley of the Jordan River on the West, part of the Jabbok river on the North and the desert on the East.

gin....a bird trap or snare.

gird....to put on clothes, to dress.

"give suck"....this phrase means "breast-feed a baby."

glass....a mirror, and/or a glass as in crystal.

glorify....exalt, give honor to, magnify, lift up, extol.

glory....books have been written to explain this word. But briefly the reader needs to know if the "glory" being spoken of is of God, the glory of a human being, or the glory of some object. These are different. The "glory" of an object might be the outward beauty and design. The "glory" of a person might be their status, their position, their looks. The "glory" of God is an awesome, powerful, pure, heavy brilliance, even a blinding radiance. Artists have tried to show the glory using light and halos and glows of various kinds. Those who have had near death experiences and anointed visions and visitations seem to have a better handle on what the glory of God is. They report a brightness and a brilliance. God's "glory" is awesome to say the least!

gluttonous....excessive over eating.

gnashing....smashing, crushing together the teeth usually.

Godhead....divinity.

Golgotha....the physical location where Jesus and two criminals were crucified. The word means skull from the Aramaic. The word Calvary comes from the Latin form of skull. Although a church has been built on one supposed location of Golgotha some today believe that "Gordon's Calvary" location is Golgotha. The hill has skull-like indentations in the side and is near to the Garden Tomb that many visit.

goodman....the ranking person in charge, the master of a house, the husband of a home.

grace....gift, God's Riches At Christ's Expense, unmerited spiritual riches poured out by the Lord God.

graff....graft. This is a process used in fruit trees when slips are grafted into a root to create a stronger fruit tree.

graffed....grafted. See graff above.

grave....this word has several meanings in the KJV. The common meaning of a place of burial is used. Also the verb "to grave" is talking about drawing, sculpting, or carving. But the most unusual meaning of the word is found in the writings of Paul. Paul says wives should be "grave." This does NOT mean "grim." A forgotten meaning of the word "grave" is "noble," or "honorable."

graven....as in "graven" image. Graven means carved upon, sculpted. Also graven means drawn as in what is called an engraving which is used to produce a printed picture. God wants us to be very careful what we carve and what we draw and the attitude we have about those pieces of art. Images can become idols very easily, more easily than we know.

gravity....this word has nothing to do with what holds us down on planet Earth in the KJV. This word means "venerableness," which is a noble and high quality. But since "venerableness" is itself a difficult word let's talk about that. It means worthy of respect by reason of age or dignity, character or position.

"great with child"....eight or nine months pregnant, about to give birth, about to have the baby.

Grecians....in the book of Acts this word comes up. It refers to those who are Greek speakers and of Greek culture. Sometimes, as for example when the location is Jerusalem, you will know that these people may be of Jewish racial background. At other times, as in Syrian Antioch (see Antioch) you will know that these Grecians may or may not be of Jewish ancestry.

greviously....very, very terribly.

grisled....dappled.

gross....fat or thick. In Acts 28:27 the word "gross" means dull, unresponsive, insensitive, even deaf.

habergeons....found in only two places, 2nd Chronicles 6:14 and Nehemiah 4:16. This a very primitive, by today's standards, type of "body armor" or flak jacket. You might think of it as a "coat of mail." It might have been small pieces of metal overlaying each other, or tight metal links of chain. It was all for the purpose of giving the soldier something to resist or at least limit injury from arrows and/or sword blows.

habitation....the place where a person or a thing lives or dwells.

Hadadrimmon....[See Zech. 12:11] referring to a mourning ritual in the Amorite Baal religion that occurred in the valley of Megiddo in ancient times. This ritual must have been very dramatic with great weeping and sadness. Zechariah mentions that this is how the Jews will mourn when they realize that Jesus Christ was the Messiah and they missed him the first time he came.

Hagarene....KJV form of Hagrite. This people were a Bedouin clan living in the area East of Gilead. Some have thought that they might be descendents of Hagar, the servant of Sarah, Abraham's wife. But this cannot be confirmed. Not much is known about these people.

hale....to drag with force.

haling....This word only appears in Acts 8:3. It means dragging or hauling people out of their homes.

hallelujah....a Hebrew word that has come into almost every other language. It is a shout of praise. It's meaning is something very close to our phrase of "praise ye the Lord." The "jah" is God's Name. And so I would warn the many people who use this word as a secular expression when they are pleased with something that you are saying the Name of God. Personally I try to speak this word only as a praise to God, or a thanksgiving to HIM. I have tried to curb myself from saying it when I am simply happy about something, or agreeing with something and not thinking of my wonderful Lord and God. I do not want to be guilty of using God's Name in a wrong way.

hallowed....holy.

halt....one who limps.

halteth....stops temporarily, or one who is lame and hobbles or limps.

Hamath....same as Hemath in First Chronicles 13:5. A town on the Orontes River in Syria, none today as Nahr el-'Asi. On a modern map the location of the town is between modern Aleppo and Damascus. The town was built on both sides of the Orontes River on a level portion of the valley which is 1,015 feet above sea level. This city was an independent city-state during several extended periods of history. At times the southern most portions of this kingdom touched the northern most portions of Israel's frontier. It was an Amorite kingdom during one period of it's history.

Hananeel....a tower which was part of the Northern rampart in old Jerusalem.

hand....the expression "at hand" means "near."

handmaid....female servant or attendant.

handmaiden....female servant or attendant, perhaps a young and unmarried girl.

haply....by chance, through the law of averages.

hardly....In Mark 10:23 if we understand "hardly" to mean "difficultly" we can more easily understand the phrase to mean: "How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God."

harlot....prostitute.

haste....speed.

hasteth...hurries.

hath....has.

haughty....full of pride.

haughtily....with pride, pridefully.

havock....KJV spelling of "havoc," meaning wide spread destruction and carnage.

head(s)....top, beginning.

headstone....cornerstone, or principal stone of a foundation.

hearken....to listen, take note and make obedient changes based on what was said. We need to hearken to the Lord God!

heathen....meaning those who do not serve God Almighty, often the enemies of God. To Jews this means unbelieving Gentiles, because there were Gentiles who honored and feared God.

hedges....thickets of brush or areas that are fenced in by bushes.

heed....careful notice, close attention.

heirs....those who inherit or are legally entitled to inherit someone else's riches, property or titles. See Romans 8:17.

hell....scientists believe the deep recesses of the Earth to be made up of molten rock or lava. The Bible teaches that in the center of the Earth there is a spiritual piece of geography called the "bottomless pit." This spiritual place was designed as a holding tank or prison for the most wicked fallen angels who are chained in that location. Apparently the fallen angels are so unruly and so powerful that they are being held there until the time of the Tribulation when they will be released. They will come up out of the pit and torture the sinful inhabitants of the Earth during that worst of all times in Earth history. Hell is the prison of the spirits of all persons who have died not knowing Christ. Hell was not designed for mankind. God is not willing that any should perish. But those who refuse God's loving advances have only hell and the Lake of Fire as possible destinations. The Bible says that hell has enlarged itself to swallow many. Jesus tells of a rich man who had much on earth except a closeness to God. He was spiritually poor and ended up in hell, a place of dreadful torture. Apparently the evil chained beings in Hell are allowed to torture the lost souls of sinners that end up there.

Hemath....same as Hamath in Zechariah 9:2. See definition for "Hamath" above.

herbs....in Romans 14:2 this word is used to mean vegetables. In 1611 this word had not gotten so specific. Today if a person only ate herbs we would be amazed because that would mean they were living on dill, parsley, mustard and cummin. But in 1611 eating only herbs meant a vegetarian eater. All plants were then thought of as herbs, not simply spices and flavorings as we have narrowed the definition today.

hereof....of this, or concerning this, or from this, or hence.

heresy (heresies)....here is an example of how a word can change through the effect of its use from 1611 to the present. This English word actually comes from the Greek word it translates, "hairesis." It's original meaning, which the KJV translators were thinking of, means "sect(s), or "party (parties)." In other words divisions within the body of Christ. These divisions had a variation of belief that was unacceptable to others within the Body of the Lord. So as a result the word evolved to mean "false doctrine." So in 1st Corinthians 11:19 Paul is saying, "there are differences, sects, groupings among you." But the modern reader with the new, evolved definition of the word "heresy" thinks Paul was saying "there are false doctrines, untruths, bad teaching among you." Perhaps Paul would agree with the fact in the modern reading, but it still communicates something which he wasn't saying in that verse. This is why it is so helpful to check the 1611 definitions of the English words in a verse.

Herod....whenever you see this name in the New Testament you need to remember that it is the name of a ruling family that controlled much of the Holy Land from 37 b.c. to 70 a.d! A Herod is on the throne through Jesus' life, the young church and beyond. The Herods are hardened and tough power brokers.

Herodians....there is an argument among scholars as to who the Herodians are, exactly. Perhaps all we need to know for certain is that if there had been an election in that day with Jesus and Herod the only two on the ballot that the Herodians would have voted against Jesus. The Herodians may not have liked the Pharisees very much, but they liked them more than they liked Jesus.

hewed....cut, chopped, dug.

hewn....cut, chopped, dug, even in stone to make a cave.

Hierapolis....a city in the Roman province of Phrygia in what today is modern Turkey. The city was located about eight miles Northwest of Colossae, but on the North side of the Lycus River. The city was famous for its hot mineral springs. The ruins of Hierapolis are rather extensive. It is located in an area named Pamukkale today. See Colossae for more location information.

high-minded....arrogant, cocky, prideful, feeling superior.

"high things"....in Romans 12:16 we find this phrase. It is referring to what today some might call "cool, in, trendy, glamorous, popular" things.

"high time"....this phrase means the moment is very close. Time is very short. This is the appropriate second to move quickly.

hinder....back, rear.

hines....mountain goats.

hire(s)....wage, wages.

hireling....an employee, one who is hired to do a job.

hiss....a noise made by pushing air between the tongue and the teeth. This noise expressed astonishment or derision. Or, as in Zechariah 10:8 the hiss is used to call God's people. Perhaps it does even mean whistle??

In short, a sacred, separate purity that is beyond measure.

Holy Ghost....KJV name for the Holy Spirit of God Almighty. The Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. HE is a real person with a real personality just as Jesus, the Son, and God the Heavenly Father are persons with personalities. However, the Holy Ghost does not lift up HIMSELF. And for that reason HE spends HIS time and energy making the Father and the Son known to those who respond to the Holy Spirit. As a result some have thought HIM to have no personality. HE is not simply a force or a presence. HE is the ONE of the Trinity that is on Earth today. The Father and Son are both in Heaven. HE is the carrier of the Word of God and the power of God. He is the ONE who makes things happen. He has been sent to be our Comforter. He is very sensitive and can easily be grieved. There is no forgiveness for anyone who says negative things about HIM. (Never do it, never approach it, always speak good of the precious Spirit of God if you value your eternal life!!!) Christians need to seek to be baptized or filled with and by the Holy Spirit. This is a second experience after salvation which has been greatly neglected. The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to those who seek God with all of their heart. Read of these things in Acts chapter two and First Corinthians 12, 13 and 14.

horn(s)....referring to strength. The "horn" of the wicked would refer to the strength of the wicked.

hosanna....comes to us by way of the Latin Vulgate translation of the Bible. Those translators attempted to use the Latin vowel and consonant sounds to get as close as they could to the actual sound of the word from the Hebrew in Psalm 118:25 which means, literally, "save us, we beseech thee." The Hebrew word the Jews were shouting, as Jesus came in on that colt of a donkey to Jerusalem, had great connection to the long hoped for Messiah. Although the crowd was looking forward to a Messiah who would set up a new physical Kingdom, truly Jesus was their Messiah, but HE had difficult spiritual work to do before HE could become King of the World. HE did that work by giving HIS life to pay a debt HE didn't owe that our sins might be removed. But truly the day is very near when HE will return to rule with a rod of iron over the entire Earth, to establish a Kingdom more glorious and mighty and pure than mankind has ever seen.

host(s)....often refers to God's armies of angels, great numbers, myriads of millions of God's mighty ones. Also it can simply mean a large group of some kind.

house....Sometimes the word "house" does not mean a building in which people live, but instead means the whole family of relatives and kinfolk within a blood line. See Matthew 23:38 and Leviticus 10:6 which show this useage of the word "house."

householder....owner.

husbandman....generally a farmer, but often referring to a farmer who owns a vineyard where wine grapes are grown.

husbandry....this word is found in First Corinthians 3:9. In that passage husbandry means the farm field, the place of cultivation. We are God's field, HIS garden, HIS soil. If we are good soil we will produce much fruit.

Huzzab....[Nahum 2:7] KJV translators mistakenly took this word for a proper name. It is really the word "natsab" which means fixed, stationed or settled. So the first phrase should have been translated: "It is settled, she shall be led away captive,..."

hymn(s)....religious song or ode.

hypocrite....says one thing, but does another, a person who mis-leads others.

Iconium....this city was located in the province of Galatia. A fast way to find the location is to locate the most Western tip of the Island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean. Then measure exactly 200 miles airline due North across sea and Land and you will see Iconium's location. It is located about 70 miles inland from the Mediterranean coast. Today that town is called Konya, a provincial capital in Turkey.

idle....of little importance, useless.

idol(s)....in the Bible it usually meant some kind of figure or statue that was worshiped as a god. More generally the word refers to anything that has been elevated to such importance that it has become something to be worshiped or adored beyond reason.

idolaters....those who worship something or someone other than God Almighty. Traditionally the first definition that comes to mind is "image worshipers." However, anyone who has elevated anything too high is an idol worshiper or idolater. How high is "too high?" When someone has gotten religious about something then they are getting that something into idol ball park. I'm thinking about certain hobbyists who will impoverish their family to practice their hobby. I'm thinking about several people who are obsessed with certain things. I'm thinking even about certain church organizations who are overtaken with a certain doctrine to where Jesus Himself has to take a back seat to their doctrine.

Illyricum....a province of the Kingdom of Rome, located on the East side of the Adriatic Sea. Today that real estate is the coastal regions of Croatia, Bosnia and Yugoslavia.

imaginations....in 2nd Corinthians 10:5 it means "reasonings," or "thought."

Immanuel....a name that originated in the prophecy of Isaiah concerning the messiah. The name means "God with us." Jesus is the fulfillment of that prophecy in Isaiah 7:14.

immutable....unchangeable.

impart....give.

impediment....a speech defect: stuttering, lisping, stammering, tongue tied.

impenitent....not repenting of sin, not contrite, not sorrowful for ones sins.

implacable....irreconcilable, unappeasable, relentless, pitiless, unforgiving.

implead....sue, litigate, go to court.

importunity....application for a favor or a duty with annoying frequency.

impotent....feeble, weak. In John 5:7 the impotent man was so feeble that he couldn't even move himself. He needed to be carried by others.

impute....see imputeth below.

imputeth....in Romans 4:6 it speaks of how blessed one is when God "imputeth" righteousness to that person. This means that God places that righteousness within them. This is better than "imparting." "Imputing" is deeper, fuller richer. "Imparting" is like giving a dirty man clean clothes. "Imputing" is to wash the man AND then give him clean clothes.

imputing....crediting, thinking or attributing to, adding to the account of. This word is only found in Habbakuk 1:11 and Second Corinthians 5:19.

inasmuch....because, since, seeing that.

incline....to bend or bow the head so as to hear better. God is asked to incline HIS ear to the one praying.

incontinency....this word only appears in one place, 1st Corinthians 7:5. Paul is talking about a married couple who agrees to fast from physical intimacy for a short time in order that they might deeply seek God. However he warns the married couple not to carry such a fast on for extended periods because Satan can then tempt them because of their "incontinency." This word is speaking of the lack of control which comes upon a married person if they fast from intimacy for a long period. They tend to have less control of their passions at such a time and are in greater danger of having wrong or improper thoughts. When they come back together again in physical union they are not so likely to be tempted by adulterous thoughts, or actions. I might add that Paul certainly had divine revelation at this point, because he was never married and he had a special gift from God which allowed him to live above such passions. Only God could have revealed such things to one who never walked the paths of married people.

incorruptible....that which is eternal, does not decompose or age or rust, that which is far beyond gold in it's ability to remain unchanged and ever new.

indignation....anger mixed with contempt.

infallible....not capable of error, dependable, reliable.

infidel....without faith, untrustworthy, an unbeliever.

infirmities....diseases, deformities, wounds, pains, cripplings, paralysis, defects, demonic conditions, weaknesses.

iniquity....evil, sin, unrighteousness, wickedness.

instant....immediate, without delay.

instantly....in Acts 26:7 we have an unusual meaning of the word "instantly." It means "earnestly." Most of the other times "instant" or "instantly" is used in the KJV, it means "quickly," "urgently," or "pressingly."

intercession....one of the deepest forms of prayer where the one praying mediates between God and man, stands between God and the one who is being prayed for. It is the deepest pleading of the soul for another to God.

intreated....KJV spelling of entreated, meaning to implore, beg, beseech, ask with great emphasis.

Isaias....Isaiah

ishi....husband.

isle....island.

isles....islands, or in Hebrew it can mean coasts or coastlands.

Israel....originally the new name given by the angel of the Lord who wrestled with Jacob, the son of Isaac. Jacob meant "supplanter." But "Israel" seems to mean "God wrestled" and "reliable," "successful," "happy." The experts are not totally agreed on what Israel means, other than it was a very positive improvement. Because Jacob/Israel was the father of the 12 sons from which the 12 tribes of the Nation arose the Jewish people as a Nation began to be called Israel, as it is today.

Israelite....a person of Jewish ancestry.

issue....a flow (as in Luke 8:43 where a woman had a constant blood flow issuing or flowing forth from her body).

Ituraea....an area North East of Galilee populated by descendants of Ishmael. Some believe this region may have been in what is now called the Beqa' Valley. There is no doubt this area and these people existed. But the geographic boundaries of their region cannot be verified with current information.

Jabin....there are two kings named Jabin. Both are Canaanite. The first was defeated and killed by Joshua. He organized several Canaanite city-states to fight Joshua as he was taking Canaan for God's people. **The second king Jabin was the Canaanite king who was behind Captain Sisera's 900 chariots who came against Barak and Deborah. See Sisera below.

jangling....babbling, sometimes meaninglessly. The phrase "vain jangling" can be found in 1st Timothy 1:6, were it refers to babblings that are wrong spirited, evil and/or useless. Paul warns that those who consider themselves spiritual teachers and leaders can fall into this pit of babble. I think the bottom line here is that if the Holy Spirit doesn't give us something to say, when it comes to teaching and preaching, we need to be silent!!

Jebusites....originally the family of people who inhabited the city and area of Jebus. Jebus is the old name of Jerusalem before David captured it and turned it into his capital.

Jeremias....one of two KJV New Testament spellings for Jeremiah the prophet.

Jeremy....one of two KJV New Testament spellings for Jeremiah the prophet.

Jericho....is really several cities. It has been destroyed repeatedly and rebuilt on different spots. The current city is built on the remains of the Jericho destroyed nearly 400 years after Christ. Some of the ruins of old Jerichos are as much as a mile from each other. Jericho is located five miles airline West of the Jordan river, and about seven and a half miles Northwest of the Dead Sea.

jesting....this word is found in Ephesians 5:4. Many Christians find this passage very unacceptable because Saint Paul comes against this practice as detrimental to the Christian life. And some groups, like the Puritans, seldom laughed, seldom smiled, had little joy because they were attempting to follow Paul's teaching. The meaning of the word is: "witticism or humor characterized by coarse joking, mocking, offensive, irreverent, or vulgar language." Another word used in this same verse is translated "foolish talking." The Greek word means "silly talk or buffoonery. **The bottom line in all of this is that if you want to advance into the deep things of God you must have a joy, a smile and a humor that is not shallow, silly, cheap or impure. God does not want his people to be childish, immature jokers, living to get the attention of others through comedic shenanigans. God wants HIS people to be rich with the joy that is from above. He wants to give them holy laughter from Heaven, which heals and restores. Much of the earthy humor we see today is a polluted and distorted imitation of the joy that is from above.

Jesus....the Hebrew name Yeshua, or more fully Yehoshuah (which means God is salvation, God will save.) In Jesus Christ's day HIS name was the not uncommon name of Joshua. Yes, His name was the same as Joshua who fought the battle of Jericho! The name was so common that Saint Paul had an acquaintance named Jesus. The name Jesus comes to us from the Greek where Joshua or Yeshua is pronounced something like this: HAYSUS. And some languages use a "J" to make that "h" sound. So we get Jesus.

Jewry....a district where only Jews live, or the Jewish people collectively.

joint-heirs....those who inherit or will legally inherit riches, property or titles, but they inherit as co-inheritors. The fortune transfers to them as co-owners. They cannot act individually upon the wealth. They must agree together what they will do with the inheritance. See Romans 8:17.

Jonas....the prophet Jonah.

Jordan....the Jordan River that ran from the North into Lake Galilee and then forming a river again running on South emptying into the Dead Sea where there is no outlet.

jot....in the KJV we read that not one "jot" or one "tittle" will pass from the law. Jots and tittles are to Greek as dots on the letter "i" and crosses on the letter "t" in English. So Jesus is saying, "not one dot on one "i" nor one cross on one "t" is going to not be fulfilled in the law."

Juda....Judah (another spelling KJV uses for Judah).

Judaea....(notice How KJV spells it Judaea.) Judea was the name given to the tribal area the Old Testament calls Judah. Judea is the First Century name the Romans knew Judah as.

Judah....originally one of the 12 tribes of Jacob from Jacob's son Judah. This is the tribe from which King David and later Jesus Christ issued forth. Later the word "Judah" also was used to mean the geographic area that was given to the tribe of Judah, which also included the city of Jerusalem. Then when the Nation of Israel split into two kingdoms after Solomon's death "Judah" received an added meaning as the name of the Southern Kingdom made up of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.

just (as in a just man)....upright, honest, righteous, equitable, impartial, fair, pure, correct, true.

justification....the act of being set in, or the state of being already in righteous relationship to God Almighty, according to the laws of God.

justified....accounted as righteous. In the case of guilty sinners coming to the Lord God and repenting they are justified (accounted as saints) because of the glorious price that was paid for the sins of all mankind by Jesus Christ.

"justified God"....in Luke 7:29 when the common people heard Jesus' teaching they agreed, even the tax collectors agreed that Jesus spoke correctly and that God was behind it all. They could see God was doing it and that God was correct all because they had received the Baptism of repentance from John the Baptist. The crowds that followed Jesus wouldn't have been on the scene if God hadn't used John the Baptist to prepare the way!

kid....a young goat or possibly a lamb.

kin....relatives, family, even in-laws.

kindred....relatives, family, even in-laws.

kinsman....a relative, generally male, in your extended or sometimes the immediate family.

kinsmen....plural of kinsman above. See kinsman.

kine....plural of cows.

kinsfolk....relatives, family, even in-laws.

Kison....KJV form of Kishon, a river that had a flash flood which defeated the Canaanite armies arrayed against Barak and Deborah. This river is only 23 miles long. It drains the western section of the Jezreel Valley. See Sisera, below.

knew....Sometimes "know" or "knew" refers to intimate knowledge. For example Joseph "knew" not his wife Mary until after Jesus was born. In other words they did not have sexual intimacy until after Jesus' birth. To those that God refuses entrance into Heaven the Lord says, "I never knew you." God wants deep spiritual intimacy with HIS people. God does not want token commitment.

knop....knob

knowledge....this word often means more than just information, trivia or intelligence. And I'm not speaking of any 1611 meanings here. I'm speaking about what the Holy Spirit has revealed. Sometimes when this word is used the Holy Spirit is trying to speak to us about the "knowledge" of spiritual intimacy, nearness to God. When Adam "knew" his wife that intimacy brought forth children, physical fruit. True knowledge of God is far beyond trivia, Bible College or intellectual persuits. Such knowledge is supernatural intimacy that comes from being alone, seeking God's face in prayer and drinking in the Word of God in large quantities. And that kind of knowledge will produce spiritual fruit!

lame....disabled, crippled, perhaps due to pain, as opposed to "maimed" which sometimes appears with lame.

Laodicea....a city in the Roman province of Phrygia in what is today modern day Turkey. It was located eight miles West of Colossae. The location of the city is not far from the Goncali railroad station. The city was abandoned around 1200 A.D. There are many visible ruins of the city today, but little archeology reported. See Colossae.

lasciviousness....lewdness, lustfulness, a tendency to excite lust in oneself or others.

Lasea....a small coastal village on the South shore of the island of Crete near the small bay of Fair Havens. The ruins of this village appear to have been found even though the Bible is the only book that gives the name of the place.

laud....to give praise and glory and honor.

law, go to....in 1st Corinthians 6:1 we see the expression "go to law." This means to take a case to the public courthouse, to instigate litigation.

lawyer....Luke uses this term probably referring to what the other Gospel writers refer to as Scribes. Luke was writing to a non-Jewish audience and chose a word more familiar to gentiles. Truly Scribes considered themselves "experts" in the Law of Moses and a lawyer is a legal expert. See "scribes." Matthew uses the term "lawyer" only once. **In Titus 3:13 Paul speaks of a lawyer named Zenas who may have been a Roman lawyer more in the sense that we understand the word today.

lees....the lees was the wine remaining at the bottom of a wine skin. The Jews like to let the dregs in the skin remain or stay "on the lees." They would filter it and preferred the taste over freshly fermented. The expression came to be used about people on their lees. Those who were on the lees were sitting around doing nothing but taking it easy.

leasing....this word is found in Psalm 4:2 and Psalm 5:6. It means "falsehood," "untruth."

leathern....leather.

leaven....leaven, which is used in baking to raise bread, is used in the Bible as a teaching tool to help God's people understand sin. Leaven spreads throughout the entire loaf to cause a change in the bread. So also sin spreads and greatly changes that which it enters into. It is important to keep sin out of our lives. Sin always spreads. Sin cannot be contained. It must be eliminated totally.

leaveneth....the process of adding leaven to something.

lentiles....lentils

leper....one who has the skin disease of leprosy.

leprosy....the skin disease common in Bible times characterized by a whiteness of the flesh. In advanced stages fingers, toes, and the nose are lost. The disease spreads through close contact over a period of time. Family members spread it by sleeping in the same bed. In Bible times it was only known that some kind of contact spread it, but they did not know that the contact had to be more than passing. You can touch a leper and not contract their disease. You must touch them for extended periods.

lest....usually means "that" or "in order that."

let....Today the word "let" generally means "to allow." And often in the KJV it has today's meaning. But in at least one circumstance the word "let" has a different meaning. 2nd Thessalonians 2:7 is an example of that case. In that verse "let" is the verb "to stop or restrain." Thus the KJV uses the phrase "...he who now letteth will let..." That phrase means "he who now restrains will restrain."

letter....in Romans 7:6 and 2nd Corinthians 3:6 you can find this word. It is referring to the legalistic, or written form of a law. Lawyers base their understanding of a law more on mere literal interpretation, and on past court decisions. That is why laws have a way of being interpreted differently than the author of the law might have conceived. In 2nd Corinthians 3:6 Paul tells us that the "letter" of the law will kill, but the "spirit" gives life. The spirit is the inner motives, the heart area that God looks at. The letter or outward performance is not deep enough. Outward performance will definitely be effected by what is at the heart. But, outward performance alone as a guide will bring great error, defeat and even death. Example: a birthday present given out of duty, without true love for the person with the birthday, is following the "letter" but not the spirit of birthday celebration. The word used in the Greek that the KJV translators translated is the same word that we get the word "grammar" from.

Levite....in Biblical Israel those in the tribe or clan of Levi (one of the 12 sons of Jacob) were generally dedicated, and the only tribe from which priests were selected. There were three rankings of men in the tribe: High Priest (of which there is only one), Sons of Aaron (who are regular priests) and finally Levites. The Levite class are those who are consecrated to do support services. They play instruments, clean and maintain the temple and it's holy objects. They are the work force of servant support to the upper ranking priests.

lewd....In Acts 17:5 the word is used to mean bullies, rough, course, wicked ones.

lewdness....that practiced by bullies, rough ones, course, wicked. In 1611 this word was a negative word, but not so focused on sexual sins as it is today.

liberal....bountiful, generous.

Libertines, Synagogue of....this is referring to the Synagogue of the Freedmen. See Acts 6:9. Apparently there were Greek speaking Jews who were freed slaves who had returned to Jerusalem. Stephen was the one who answered there challenges to the faith and paid with his life.

licence....permission.

licentiousness....sensual or sexual excess, found in lives where sex is the underlying and over-ruling theme.

Light....in the Gospel of John the first chapter John is referring to Jesus Christ when you see the word "Light."

likeminded....having agreement, when two or more think the same about a subject or a situation.

liken....compare, compare to.

likened....compared, like, compared to.

likewise....the same, in the same manner.

lineage....in the family of, in the family line of, related to.

lintel....a wooden beam above the door, probably a support beam for the door frame. Sometimes a lintel is a border.

listed....this word appears only two times in the KJV, in Matthew 17:12 and Mark 9:13. The word appears in the same narrative of Jesus speaking about how Elias (Elijah) had indeed reappeared and those on the scene did to Elias "whatsoever they listed." The KJV word "listed" means "pleased." Jesus was referring to John the Baptist who came as part of the fulfillment of that prophecy concerning Elijah and that the leaders of the day did to John whatever they desired. Herod beheaded John.

listeth....prefers, chooses, desires.

"little of stature"....short.

lo....look, see, behold, observe (a word used to attract the listener's attention).

locust(s)....a grasshopper-like insect that can fly long distances.

"lofty looks"....In Isaiah 2:11 this phrase is speaking of a proud look or facial expression.

loins....hips or lower part of the back.

lots...."cast lots" meaning gambling, rolling dice or pulling straws, a game of odds.

Lubim....Libya.

lucre or "greedy of filthy lucre"....this phrase can be found in 1st Timothy 3:3. The Greek word means "very desirous of sordid or wrong and evil monetary or other kinds of gain."

lump....in Romans 11:16 this word refers to a ball of baking dough from which one breaks off some to form a small loaf for baking. If the first small loaf signifies the firstfruit and is holy, then the main ball of dough is holy also.

lunatick....one who has seizures, an epileptic, may also be demonically associated.

lust....this word was used by the KJV translators to translate four Hebrew words in the Old Testament and four Greek words in the New Testament. The meaning of the eight words varies. In the New Testament the word "lust" always refers to "desires" of one kind or another. These desires might be good or evil. For example in Galations 5:17 Paul uses the verb form (lusteth) to speak of how the Holy Spirit has "desires" that are against the fleshly desires. The Holy Spirit of God has good lusts or good desires. But generally "lust" in the New Testament refers to longings with one Greek word meaning very evil sexual desires. In the Old Testament "lust" is used to translate words that mean "delight," "life, breath, wind," "obstinacy," "longing delight." When you find the word "lust" in the Old Testament you might want to consult the New American Standard Bible to see what the translators were using the word "lust" to translate.

lusteth....the verb form of "lust." See "lust" above.

lusts....desires. See lust above.

Lycaonia....a district that shrank during the ages until in Paul's day it was basically the region with the two cities of Lystra and Derbe. You can best locate where Lycaonia was by spotting the most Western tip of the island of Cyprus. Then measure due North 160 miles. You will then be looking at what was once Lycaonia now in the country of Turkey.

Lydda....also known as Lod is eleven miles Southeast of the city of Joppa. Lydda has a long history reaching even to the present. Peter's visit to the town helped make it a very strong Christian area.

Lysanias....governor of Abilene (see Abilene) during the ministry of Jesus. There was an earlier Lysanias who governed before Christ's birth. Remember it was the second Lysanias that Luke tells us about.

Lystra....is about 20 miles South of Iconium. The Best way to find this area is to locate the most Western tip of the Island of Cyprus. Then measure Northward about 180 miles to Lystra. Lystra is only a mound today.

Macedonia....a district that today is part of Northern Greece, Macedonia (part of old Yugoslavia) and Bulgaria. Towns like Neapolis, Philippi and Thessalonica are in the portion that is today Greece.

Machmas....a KJV alternate spelling of Michmash. See Michmas.

Madian....Early KJV spelling for the Midian. See Midian.

Magdala....this is the KJV translation of the name of a town called Magadan in the Greek in Matthew and Dalmanutha in the book of Mark. Mary of Magdalene is probably from this town. The town is located on the Western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Today the city of Mejdel is located on the site of Magdala, three miles North, Northwest of Tiberius.

magistrates....officers with power to enforce laws, police.

magnify....glorify, praise, extol, lift up. This is something we do to our wonderful Lord!

Mahershalalhashbaz (Maher-shalal-hash-baz)....[see Isaiah 8:1,3,18] this is the name of the second son of Isaiah the prophet. It is a name that God commanded the prophet to give to the boy. There is deep symbolism in this name. The name is indeed a saying in the Hebrew tongue which is: "The spoil speeds, the prey hastes." The significance of the child being given this name is that judgment was signed, sealed and certain to be delivered upon Syria and Ephraim [Ephraim here means the Northern Kingdom].

maimed....crippled.

Maktesh....the quarter of Jerusalem where the silver traders and silver smiths conducted their business, near the Fish Gate, in the time of King Josiah.

malefactors....criminals who are condemned.

malice....an active evil will against someone or something.

malignity....This word is found only in Romans 1:29. The KJV translators used this word to translate a Greek word meaning: "mischievousness."

Malta....an island 60 miles South of the island of Sicily. Sicily being at the Southern tip of Italy.

mammon....wealth, money, property, profit, the substance of this World.

mandrake....a perennial, stemless herb with dark green and large leaves. This plant grows rather commonly in unworked fields of the Eastern Mediterranean regions. The story of Leah's fertility and Rachel's barrenness in Genesis 30:14-16 goes along with the continuing myth that this plant can improve the chances of human conception. Some even call the fruit the "love apple." The meaty root and bright yellow plum shaped berry are superstitiously believed to contain the secret ingredient for conception. The translation of the Arabic name for this plant also goes along with the myth: "eggs of the jinn-spirits." Locals consider the plant edible, but it is somewhat poisonous bringing a purging to the eater. This plant is closely related to the very poisonous nightshade. Although Song of Solomon (7:13) speaks of its fragrance most Westerners find the odor unpleasant.

manger....a receptacle that holds animal feed for cows or sheep to eat. This feeding device was where Mary first laid the baby Jesus, probably because it kept the child up off the ground. Mangers are usually elevated to the level that a farm animal can eat without stooping.

manifest....made clear, evident, plain, obvious, apparent.

manifested....revealed, showed, exhibited, displayed, declared, discovered.

manifold....many aspects; think of a folded paper fan that has many folds. God's manifold blessings are the infinite, unlimited aspects, sections and types of blessings HE has.

manna....the supernatural edible white material that God sent daily (except on the Sabbath day) to HIS people the Jews while they were on route to the Holy Land during their 40 years of wondering in the wilderness. This manna would appear each morning coating the rocks and ground.

mantle....an upper and outer garment or robe.

Maranatha...."Come Lord," or "our Lord come." This word is an Aramaic word. Aramaic was the native tongue of Jesus. This Word had become a greeting of encouragement and hope. You will find it in 1st Corinthians 16:22.

Mars Hill....see Areopagus.

marvelled....vocally or inwardly showed astonishment.

marvelled....today we spell this word "marveled."

mastery....victory, superiority in knowledge or skill.

masteries....this word appears only in 2nd Timothy 2:5. In the original Greek Paul uses a word we would equate with a sports competition. The Greek says something like this: "If anyone wrestles, he is not crowned unless he wrestles lawfully [or according to the rules]." And so in this case the KJV translators have used the phrase "strive for masteries" to roughly translate "wrestles."

mattock....we would call it a gardening hoe. It was a tool made of metal which was used to break the soil, or to weed. It had a blade on one end and a picking or narrower blade on the opposite end, two tools in one.

mean....in Romans 2:15 "the mean" is speaking of "the middle position, or center position." In Isaiah 5:15 it speaks of the "mean man." Today a "mean man" is an evil, terrible, wicked man. But in 1611 "mean" was used as a mathematician does. Ask any mathematics person and they will tell you "the mean" is something like "the average." Therefore in your KJV Bible remember that "mean" usually should be defined as "average" not "evil."

"mean man"....In Isaiah 2:9 and 5:15 this phrase is speaking of the "average man," or the "common man." See "mean" above.

means....that by which something is done or obtained, the resource that makes a thing possible.

meat....sometimes this word means dinner or banquet. For example in Luke 12:37 it speaks of sitting down "to meat." "Meat" is also used to mean "food" in general. See John 6:27.

mediator....one who helps two persons and/or groups to come together in reconciliation, forgiveness and/or agreement. The mediator aids in these ones having oneness or unity restored. Jesus Christ is the ultimate mediator between God and man.

Medes....one of the groups present in Jerusalem during the Feast of Pentecost. Their nation was called Media, a region in Northwestern Iran between the Elburz mountains, the Salt Desert, Persia and Mesopotamia. Their capital city was Ecbatana.

meek....patient and mild, gentle and kind.

meet....sometimes the word "meet" in the KJV means "proper" or "appropriate." But I might add that this word is used to translate almost 30 Hebrew and Greek words!! One of my favorite meanings for "meet" is the word it translates in Colossians 1:12. That Greek word means "qualified." If you are not sure how this word is being used take a look at the verse in the New American Standard Bible.

Melita....KJV spelling for the island of Malta. See Malta.

menpleasers....doing a deed to get on the someone's good side, manipulating another person by doing something they desire. And yet doing these deeds for purely selfish ends.

menstealers....kidnappers, enslavers, even slave traders.

Mesopotamia....a land with various borders depending upon the era. However generally the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, modern day central Iraq. People from Mesopotamia were present in Jerusalem for Pentecost.

Messias....Messiah, anointed One, the Christ. Messiah is the Hebrew word for anointed one. Notice the KJV spelling is different.

mete....measure, estimate.

Michmas....alternate spelling of Michmash. See Michmash below.

Michmash....This was a city in the tribal area of Benjamin. It was located in a mountain area, about seven miles Northeast of the city of Jerusalem. Today there is a village at that location called Mukhmas. The area is about 2,000 feet above sea level.

Midian....Midian was a son of Abraham and his third wife, Keturah. The land of Midian was in what is now North West Arabia, near the Gulf of Aqabah. The Midianites were one of the first nomadic peoples to adopt the use of the camel just after it was domesticated. They used it like desert cavalry to invade. It was the Midianites that Gideon defeated. Through his bravery the two princes of the Midianites were killed, Oreb and Zeeb. Later the two kings of the Midianites, Zebah and Zalmunna were killed.

Midianites....the people of Midian. [See Midian above.]

Migron....This was a town located somewhere within the tribal area of the clan of Benjamin. 1st Samuel 14:2 tells us that it was somewhere at the farthest edge of a region known as Gibeah. There was a pomegranate tree there where King Saul camped and gathered intelligence on the invading Philistine Army. This town is mentioned in Isaiah 10:28. The exact location of this town has been a subject of varying opinions. The strongest view locates it next to Geba.

Miletum....another name for the Greek seaport of Miletus. See Miletus.

Miletus....an important Greek seaport and harbor on the West coast of what is now Turkey.

millstone....even in Christ's time there were large animal driven millstones, in the shape of a wheel, that would grind grain for an entire community. The weight of such a stone would certainly be so great, that to hang it around a person's neck and toss them into a deep sea would take them to a terrible end. Such a horrible fate, Jesus said, would be a far better fate than for a child abuser to fall into Almighty God's hands. God takes a very deem view concerning those who cause young Christians and children to fall into evil, sin and darkness. Those who cause such stumbling can be forgiven. But if these perpetrators ignore their sins, they will endure a fate far worse than they can imagine.

mincing....in Isaiah 3:16 it speaks of the women "walking and mincing." It appears that the Hebrew here may be referring to a flirtatious kind of walk that draws the eyes of men. Some women today "wiggle when they walk" to get the attention of men. And the Lord sees this as wrongful behavior in public. It tempts men to have wrong desires for women they are not married to.

mingled....to mix different things together.

minished....today we use the word "diminished," but basically this KJV word means to make smaller, fewer, lesser, lower. This word is only found in Psalms 107:39.

minstrels....in Matthew 9:23 this world should have been translated "flute players." The Greek tells us what kind of instrument these minstrels were playing.

mint....an aromatic plant whose leaves are used in flavoring and medicine.

mirth....laughter.

mites....In Mark 12:42 Jesus observes the poor widow give an offering of two "mites." This KJV word was used by the translators to help 1611 readers in England understand. The translators used the name of a small copper coin of their era. The coins the widow did give were two Leptons, the smallest Greek copper coin weighing about one gram. My guess is the United States penny has finally sunken to the value of a Lepton. In fact I would guess the U.S. penny is worth even less since they stopped making it of solid copper and now copper-coat worthless junk metal they call pennies.

mitre....name for a Hebrew priest's headdress.

Mitylene....the main town on the Aegean island of Lesbos. It is on the Southeastern corner of Lesbos, just off the coast of what is now Turkey.

Moab....the son of Lot by his eldest daughter, his two daughters drunkened him and committed incest. Apparently Moab then became the father of the Moabites who formed a nation that inhabited a region on the Eastern shore of the Dead Sea, primarily between the River Arnon and the Brook Zerred, although at strong times they controlled the entire Eastern side of the Dead Sea. The Moabites were a concern for Israel from the Exodus until Babylonia destroyed and sacked Jerusalem.

moderation....gentle, mild, conservatively, softly, without excess, middle-of-the-road.

Moloch....KJV spelling of Molech. A pagan god to whom human sacrifice was made in the Valley of Hinnom near Jerusalem.

mollified....in Isaiah 1:6 this word appears. It means "softened." It speaks about wounds that are "softened" by ointment. This would be like we apply petroleum jelly to a hard scab to make the scab more comfortable to bear.

moreover....further, beyond this, likewise.

morrow....tomorrow.

mortify....kill, make dead, put to death.

mote....a splinter, a piece of straw or grass, a tiny twig.

motions....in Romans 7:5 this word is used to refer to our evil passions, or evil emotions originating in the sinful nature.

mufflers....ladies scarves, long flowing scarves, or veils. These were more for appearance than warmth.

munition....fortification.

murmured....opposing thoughts and ideas spoken to others and/or quietly to oneself. God hears words spoken quietly against HIM, even when those words are spoken so quietly that they are just thoughts!

mused....pondered.

musick....music.

Myra....the capital city of the Roman province of Lycia. To locate Myra on today's maps measure 140 miles due West from the most Western tip of the Island of Cyprus. Then measure 80 miles due North until you touch the Southern coast of Turkey.

myrrh....an herb used in the making of perfumes. Also the extract of myrrh was used as a narcotic pain killer, Mark tells us, offered to Jesus before being crucified. See "gall."

Mysia....the Northwester corner of what is today Turkey minus that small section of Turkey that is across the waterway passage to the Black Sea. The cities mentioned in the New Testament that were in Mysia are: Alexandria, Troas, Assos, Adramyttium and Pergamum.

Nain....the city outside of which Jesus raised a son from the dead. That village still exists today. It is known as Nein. It is located five miles South East of Nazareth and 25 miles from Capernaum.

Naphtali....the sixth son of Jacob by Rachel's maid Bilhah, one of the 12 tribes of Jacob within Israel. The geographic area of Naphtali is near the city of Capernaum where Jesus headquartered His early ministry.

"natural man"....in 1st Corinthians 2:14 Paul uses this phrase to refer to those who are in the condition of only being born into this World. Their spiritual being has not been born into Christ. They are totally unaware of the things of the Spirit of God. To some extent this condition is not totally dealt with until a person progresses into the deeper life of the Spirit of God. After you are saved your "natural man" left-overs are what Paul calls the "old man." See "old man."

nay....no.

Nazareth....the boyhood home of Jesus. Nazareth is located 15 miles from the Sea of Galilee and 20 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. It is at an altitude of 1300 feet above sea level. It has a moderate climate. Before Jesus' time there is just about no mention of this town. It truly was an insignificant place, not even on the main road.

Nazarite(s)....This is a male Jew who has taken a special vow of purity. Nazarites never drink anything alcoholic, and they do not cut their hair. They obey a tougher set of rules concerning death of loved ones. They are deep seekers after God. John the Baptist was a Nazarite. This vow category was created by God HIMSELF and is not some man-made idea. The requirements for being a Nazarite are outlined in the Old Testament as God inspired those regulations. I believe it is important that God considered the avoidance of alcohol as a prerequisite for the deeper life of holiness.

Neapolis....a city on Paul's travels. It is located in the province of Macedonia. See Macedonia.

necessity....in Romans 12:13 this word means "need."

neesings....sneezings. This word is found in Job 41:18.

neighbour....KJV spelling of "neighbor."

Nephthalim....KJV spelling of Naphtali. See Naphtali.

nevertheless....still, yet.

"new man"....This is the person that arises when you are saved. When you are born again the "new man" is born. Some refer to this one as the "spirit man." This is the one that will go to Heaven if you live a holy life. This is the one that will be saved if you walk in all the light. The "new man" cannot progress very well until you are filled, baptized in the Holy Ghost. See "old man" and see "overcomer."

Nicolaitanes....this group is mentioned in Revelation 2:6 and 2:15. All that we really know about them is that they support a doctrine and teaching that is false and wrongful in the opinion of Jesus Christ. Jesus warns against them. Some scholars believe that the Nicolaitanes are the followers of a false teacher named Nicolaus whom some of the early church fathers mention in their writings. The bottom line is that we don't know much about them. And perhaps it is best that way. We don't really need to be experts on the wrongful teachings of false teachers. We need to be experts in allowing the Holy Spirit to open the Bible to our understanding. If we are full of the Spirit of God and full of the Word of God, we will be able to discern truth from error immediately.

Nicopolis....This city, mentioned in Titus 3:12 was located in present day Greece, on the western coast, very near the current city of Preveza. It was a metropolis of about 30,000 in Paul's time.

Nineve....this is a KJV variant spelling for Nineveh. See Nineveh below.

Nineveh....an ancient capital of Assyria. Destroyed in 612 B.C. 500 miles, airline, Northeast of Israel in what is now Northern Iraq, just across the Tigris River from the current city of Mosul, Iraq.

Ninevites....citizens of the city of Nineveh.

ninth hour....3 P.M. in the afternoon.

Noe....KJV New Testament spelling of Noah who built the Ark.

"noised abroad"....spread widely by word of mouth, gossiped about the whole area.

notwithstanding....in spite of, despite, never the less, however.

nought....nothing, nothingness.

novice....a beginner. Paul speaks of a novice as one who should not be put into positions of responsibility. This is a secret that has been long forgotten. In today's church we are too quick to put new believers into responsible ministry positions. What we forget, that Paul brings out in 1st Timothy 3:6, is that in God's work we don't look for ability we look for the one the Holy Spirit wants in the job. And the Holy Spirit seldom calls newbies or novices into leadership! Just because a new believer can do a job is NO excuse to give the new believer the job! Putting newer believers into leadership positions is a recipe for defeat!! New believers are extremely easy targets for Satan to bring down with pride. I'm sorry to say it, but the visible church today has been "stupid" in many of it's endeavors by not listening to the Word of God in this matter! To complicate the problem, today's church retires senior saints! The senior saints should be the ones in leadership, not the 20 and 30 year olds! Taking senior saints out of leadership sets the saints up for a fall also! In God's work we NEVER retire! Taking the saints out of the harness can sink them spiritually!

oaks....in Isaiah 1:29 the KJV translators chose the word "oaks" to translate a Hebrew word that means "strength." If you have ever cut an oak tree down you understand how much more dense, heavy, and tough oak wood is. A living oak tree is hard enough to cut. But once an oak tree has died and the wood dried out, then even a chain saw must be sharpened in the middle of the cutting process to bring that hardened tree down. In other parts of the Old Testament we see indications that the Gentile inhabitants of the Holy Land would carry on idol worship in association with a strong tree. Trees were not a terribly abundant commodity in Bible times. There were some forests...but for the most part heavy forests, like those in Europe, Siberia and the United States did not exist. And so trees were often worshiped, or made part of worship. Idols were carved from quality wood if possible. The practice of worshiping the creation rather than the creator has always been extremely revolting to the Lord God. The builder, the creator is always far greater than what he creates. The Lord God is the ONLY awesome one. HIS creation points to HIM. But to worship something HE created is terrible indeed!

oath....a very serious promise, declaration or affirmation made with a reference statement to a deity or object in order to guarantee the truth of what was stated.

odour....odor.

offscouring....worthless discard material scrapped off something, like old paint scrapped from the hull of some ship. Totally worthless and repulsive material.

"old man"....in Romans 6:6 Saint Paul uses the title of "old man" to identify the ungodly and earthy person transmitted into us from our fallen ancestors, Adam and Eve. Every human being receives this natural, earthy, fallen person as their birthright from Adam. This fallen person desires wrong, selfish, dark, evil things. That person has no desire for God. That person cannot be saved. That person is cursed from the fall of Adam. That person is an enemy of God. That person wants nothing to do with holiness and purity. That person wants to dwell in evil and wrongness. That person is a corrupted and cursed being that comes to life when we are physically born. When we are physically born our "new man" is dead, comatose, inactive, powerless, suspended, no more than a possibility. The "old man" is totally in charge. When we are born again, born from above, saved and the Spirit of God touches us, then our "old man" is dealt a terrible blow. The "old man" is stunned for a time. And our "new man" is born and made alive. Shortly after our salvation the "old man" will begin to stir a bit. We may stumble and fall back. A power play begins at that time between the "old man" and the "new man." From that time on either the "old man" is dying or the "new man" is dying. They cannot both succeed at once. If we feed the new man with righteousness and holiness then we progress and the "old man" sinks deeper and deeper into the grave. But if we relapse and fall back into our old ways the new man begins to suffocate and the old man begins to revive. This is why Paul's letter to the Colossians insists that we must walk and go forward in Christ continually. Victory over the "old man" can only truly come as a result of the Christian walking forward into the experience of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and then to progress on deeper in God from there. Some believers even go on into the highest level of the "overcomer." See "overcomer." See "new man."

Olives, Mount of....the Mount of Olives is a half mile, as the crow flies, East, across the Kidron Valley from the Temple Mount. The Mount of Olives is higher and looks down on the Temple and it's grounds. The Olive orchards must have been much greater in ancient times going back even to David's time. Some of the Olive trees are old enough to have been there in Christ's day although much was destroyed in the terrible siege by the Romans in 70 A.D. The Garden of Gethsemane was located somewhere in or about the Mount of Olives. There are several traditions as to where the Garden was on or about the Mount.

omega....the last letter in the Greek alphabet. This letter is somewhat akin to the letter "Z" in the Latin alphabet.

Omri....an early king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. He was powerful and politically crafty. But his reign sealed the downward direction of the 10 northern tribes. He gave his eldest son, Ahab, in marriage to Jezebel, daughter of the king of Phoenicia. Omri did very wickedly and brought a curse that greatly helped destroy Israel.

oppression....This word appears only in the Old Testament. It is used to translate five or six Hebrew words. These words mean "distress," "affliction," "injury," "fraud," "unjust gain," all of which are perpetrated upon another. In Isaiah 5:7 this word is used, to translate a word in Hebrew that is stronger than simple oppression. Probably a better translation in that verse would be "slaughter" or "bloodshed." The word "oppression" in the church has come to be connected with the evil manipulations of Satan and his fallen angels upon human beings, both believers and non-believers. "Oppression" by the evil one is something less than "possession." Christians can, if they allow or stumble, oppression from the enemy. But Christians cannot be possessed by the enemy. Only sinners can be possessed. If the oppression is allowed to escalate totally and un-opposed it could become possession where a believer loses their relationship with Christ. This is a topic of debate. I don't want to find out the absolute truth concerning this by experience. I choose to go all out for my Saviour Jesus Christ. However, it has been my experience that many believers and followers of Jesus Christ, including pastors, have allowed certain oppressions of the enemy to enter their lives. They seem unaware of these things, such as bitterness, lust, greed, control, manipulation, envy and such. These are tools of oppression from the enemy of our souls.

oracle....this word is only found in the Old Testament. It is used to translate two Hebrew words. It can mean the inner most portion of the Hebrew temple or tabernacle, the Holy of Holies, or Holy Place. This is the most common usage. However, "oracle" is used to translate a second Hebrew word in only one instance, in 2nd Samuel 16:23. There is some question about the meaning of that word. It might mean "the word of God," or perhaps the Holy of Holies. The KJV translators thought that word meant the Holy of Holies, where the Ark of the Covenant rested. The NASB translators think that word meant the Word of God.

oracles....this word only appears in the New Testament. And in all cases this word is used to translate a Greek word that means the words or utterance of God Almighty.

ordained....appointed, chosen, set in place to do spiritual ministries. ***In Acts 13:48 we see "ordained" used to say that those who believed and received Christ as Saviour were those that had been "ordained." In other words God chose them, perhaps because HE knew they were the ones that would choose HIM. Sadly, today "ordained" refers more to a religious ceremony, with accompanying paperwork, that gives a professional minister a license to do professional and religious things. The ordination of God is a better thing than what man has made of it.

ordinance(s)....law(s).

Oreb....see Midian, above.

Osee....Hosea the prophet. You will find this KJV spelling of Hosea in Romans 9:25.

ought....sometimes this word's meaning can be translated by substituting the word "something," or "anything." Other times the meaning is translated when you substitute the word "should."

outwent....overtook, out run.

overcharge(d)....in the KJV this word has nothing to do with damaging car batteries, nor anything to do with getting cheated at a sale in the Mall :). This word's meaning has changed greatly since 1611! Back then "overcharge" meant being "severe," or "harsh" to the point of grieving or hurting others.

overcomer....this is the highest level of Christianity which few desire and few attain to. The overcomer is one who has walked in all the light, walked in the fruit of the Spirit, been filled with the Holy Ghost and then has continued to progress forward into this highest level. The overcomer has become victorious over so many tests and temptations that they live a totally supernatural life. Signs and wonders follow them. They have attained to the full measure of the stature of Christ. The Holy Ghost so rules and reigns in them that they don't live, but Christ lives in them. Jesus walks in their being and utilizes their body as HIS body. They have the joy of the Lord. They are crucified, or dead to the World, the desires of the World and sin of all kinds. Awesome humility and a total lack of pride and arrogance surround them. Jesus reigns in and through them. This level is too awesome almost for words. Today it is a privilege just to meet one of these saints. Meeting such a saint will give you hope to seek for that life in Jesus Christ.

palsy....paralysis of some part(s) of the body, not to be confused with tremors or shaking of the body.

palsies....the plural form of palsy above.

Pamphylia....a Roman province on the mid-southern coast of what is now Turkey. It catches one's eye when the large bay associated with this area is seen. It was a very narrow province because of a range of mountains that almost cut it off to the North. Most of it's contact with the rest of the world was by sea.

pang(s)....sudden, sharp pain(s).

Paphos....a city on the Southwest end of Cyprus visited by Paul, Barnabas and John Mark.

paps....nipples.

partaker....one who has a portion of, or takes a share of something.

partakest....have a portion of, take a share of something.

parted....gave, divided.

Parthians....one of the groups in attendance at Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was given. These people were a tribal clan from what is now Iran.

passion....Luke 1:3 refers to Jesus' passion. "Passion" has come to be that single word that defines the work of Jesus Christ on Earth, culminated by HIS unbelievable suffering. Thus today we have "passion" plays because in 1611 the word "passion" meant terrible suffering. It is sad that this word today has become more associated with things you shield your children from than the suffering of the Lord Jesus. This deeply meaningful word has been prostituted by the media.

passover....an annual Jewish feast celebrating the final days in Egypt when the Death Angel passed over every house that had the blood of a lamb smeared on the door posts. The Egyptians lost all of their first born on that night, for the Death Angle did not passover them, but entered their homes, taking many lives. After that final and horrible plague from Heaven Pharaoh allowed the Hebrews to leave. This feast is set by the lunar or moon calendar. It varies from late March to early May.

Patara....a coastal city in what was the district of Lycia in what is today on the Western portion of the Southern coast of Turkey.

Patmos....a tiny island amongst a group of about 25 islands in the Aegean Sea. The Island of Rhodes is the largest of all these islands, much larger. Patmos is 150 miles airline, Northwest of Rhodes. It is about 40 miles from the west coast of Turkey. The island is about ten miles long, from the North to the South. At the widest point the island is six miles wide. The island's geology is made up of rocky and volcanic hills. This is the place where John The Beloved, the youngest disciple of Jesus, was banished. The early church fathers report that John was banished to Patmos in 95 A.D. by then current Ceasar, Domitian. Eusebius reports that John was released 18 months later when Nerva took the place of Domitian. There is a Monastery of Saint John that sprang up in 1088 A.D. near the cave where John is reported to have stayed.

patriarch....is an early founding father, or at least a distant father (David is called a patriarch even though he is generations from Abraham the first founding father of the Jews. See Acts 2:29). Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are generally the patriarchs of the Jews.

payed....paid

peace....this word can mean tranquility and lack of warfare as we understand it today. But the KJV also uses this word in phrases like, "they held their peace." The meaning in this case is "they held their tongues and said nothing."

Pekah....king of the Northern Kingdom of Israel 737 to 732 B.C. He murdered the former king, Menahem's son and usurped the throne. Pekah's father's name was Remaliah. Pekah joined forces with Rezin, King of Damascus against Ahaz king of Jerusalem. This failed leading to Pekah's disappearance from the scene of history.

pence....pennies, the KJV plural of penny.

pennyworth....the amount of goods that a penny will buy.

Pentecost....this is a Greek word meaning "the fiftieth day." This Greek word refers to what the Jews called the Feast of Weeks. The Feast of Weeks got it's name because it came fifty days, or about seven "weeks," after the Jewish religious ceremony called the "barley sheaf." The barley sheaf was a part of the Feast of Passover. Barley sheaf indicated the start of the offering of First Fruits. **For Christians the day of Pentecost was the day the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit was given in a new and powerful way to be the Comforter, Guide, Teacher and Controller of the Church of Jesus Christ. In Acts Chapter Two we read of the unusual events that took place when the Holy Spirit arrived.

penury....extreme poverty.

peradventure....by chance, perhaps, possibly.

perceived....when this word is used of Jesus reporting, for example, that Jesus perceived the Pharisees thoughts, it is speaking about a supernatural gift of discernment and knowledge which operated in Jesus when the Holy Spirit chose for it to operate. It did not operate when the woman slipped up and touched the hem of Jesus' garment to be healed. The Holy Spirit is in control of gifts not the receiver of the gift. The Holy Spirit operates gifts in a way and a manner that glorifies God. *In other passages where the word is not referring to a supernatural gift, then the meaning of "perceived" speaks of "knowing," being "aware" of some fact or truth.

perdition....complete and irreversible loss of the eternal soul, damnation. In some cases "perdition" is another name for Hell.

perdition, the son of....The phrase "the son of perdition" appears in two passages, John 17:12 and 2nd Thessalonians 2:3. In John the phrase refers to Judas Iscariat who betrayed Jesus. In Thessalonians it refers to the Anti-Christ, the one-world ruler, at the end of the age, who is the son of Hell. What makes this even more interesting is that in Revelation 17:8 the angel tells John that the Anti-Christ will be a person who once lived on Earth, but at that moment was not on earth and who would come up out of the pit of Hell to rule and then go on to "perdition." The word "perdition" appears in each of these verses. It makes me wonder if the Anti-Christ is to be Judas Iscariat come back from the dead???

perfect....we are commanded to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect. This command in Matthew 5:48 changes the meaning of perfect!! We can never be perfect in accuracy as our Father is for we are flesh. Even machines can out do us in accuracy, smoothness, exactness. But we can be perfect with God's help as our Heavenly Father in one way. Our Father has "perfect love." HE sends HIS rain and sun on the good farmer and on the evil farmer because he loves them both equally, perfectly. God wants us to be perfect in love. And this takes the working of the Holy Spirit to perfect us in that manner.

Perga....a main city of the province of Pamphylia in what is now the South central coast of Turkey. The town was eight miles inland and five miles West of the river Cestrus, known today as the river Ak Su.

Pergamos....KJV spelling of Pergamum. See Pergamum.

Pergamum....a city in the Roman province of Mysia, 15 miles East of the Aegean Sea coast. It was located where the modern city of Bergama, Turkey is today. Pergamum has a long history. It was the home of one of the Seven Churches Jesus spoke of in the Book of Revelation. This city was a center of Caesar worship, better known as the Emperor Cult.

peril....danger.

perilous....dangerous and/or difficult.

perish....die, usually due to some calamity.

"perjured persons"....This phrase is found only in 1st Timothy 1:10. It refers to those who break their promises and their oaths, those who cannot keep their word.

perverse....off course from the correct path, wicked, corrupt.

pervert....to wrench, twist or corrupt.

perverteth....miss directing, turning from what is right and correct, to turn something to an improper use.

pestilence....sickness, disease.

Pharisees....in Jesus day a section of the Jewish leadership who focused on the Law of Moses and a very legalistic interpretation based on the opinions of generations of Pharisees before them. They believed in separating themselves from those who disagreed with them. They were the most powerful portion of Jewish leadership in that era.

Phenice....one of two KJV spellings of Phoenicia which was located where the country of Lebanon is today. ***Please note that in Acts 27:12 the KJV translators placed this name of "Phenice" where they should have spelled out "Phoenix." This Phoenix was a harbor on the South coast of Crete, West of Fair Havens. There is some disagreement as to which of two harbors Phoenix is.

Phenicia....another KJV spelling of Phoenicia. See Phenice.

Philippi....a city on Paul's travels. It is located in the province of Macedonia. See Macedonia.

Philistia....the country of the Philistines. See Philistines below.

Philistines....were not a semitic people. They apparently have Aegean or Cretan blood. They settled on the Mediterranean coast near what is now Gaza. They were often used by God to bring judgment on HIS people. Goliath, the giant killed by David, was one of their champions.

philosophy....the organized reasonings and mental thinkings of man, especially of those with powerful minds. Paul warns us in Colossians 2:8 to "beware" of "philosophy." It can ruin us!! Philosophy has a way of thoroughly convincing our little minds that a thing is true and correct, when in reality it may not be so!! We need to remember that the greatest human mind has the reasoning powers of a brain-dead cockroach in comparison to the Divine mind of Jesus Christ. And so the best sounding arguments of men may indeed be full of wrongness and error. It is far better to stick with what the Word of God says, inspite of all human reasonings!!!

phylacteries....small leather boxes, one fastened to the forehead and the other on the hand or arm during prayer. Inside the boxes are scriptures from the Torah. When you see Jews praying at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, on the News, you will notice that some have these small black boxes on their foreheads.

Phrygia....was a district about 100 miles due East of Ephesus. Ephesus is on the Western coastline of what is today Turkey. Three cities are a part of the Phrygia area: Heiropolis, Colossae, Laodicea. People from Phrygia were present in Jerusalem for Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was given. Phrygia's exact borders have been a matter of much conjecture.

physician....a medical doctor.

piety....devotion to pure, holy and right living in all of life's activities, living totally to please God.

pipes....flute type of instrument, a tube, a bezel, the mounting for a gemstone.

Pisidia....a district containing a town named Antioch, not Syrian Antioch. The Best way to locate this district is to find the Western most tip of the Island of Cyprus. Measure due North 170 miles and then due West 75 miles. There in what is now the land of Turkey you will see the area.

pitiful....This word appears once in the Old Testament (Lamentations 4:10) and twice in the New Testament (James 5:11 and 1st Peter 3:8). I want to especially call attention to the New Testament usage. In the New Testament the word means something quite different than how we use it today. Today we use the word when we see something or someone in a sorry or run down condition. "That restaurant's food was pitiful! We won't be eating there again!" But in the KJV the word is used to mean "full of concern, caring, full of sympathy." It tells us that God is full of sympathy, love, concern and caring for mankind and we ought to be like HIM in that manner.

place....sometimes this word is used in the KJV to mean "space." Example: "...and place shall not be found for them." Zech. 10:10

play....in 1st Corinthians 10:7 this word does not mean box games and baseball. It is recalling when the Israelites in the wilderness indulged in uncontrolled sexual escapades, an orgy of immoral activity without any thought or concern for the aftermath of their indulgence.

plough....KJV spelling of "plow."

pluck....pick.

plummet...."plumb bob" or weight at the end of a plumb line.

Pontus....a Roman province on the south coast of the Black Sea. People from this province were present at the Feast of Pentecost.

porter....door keeper.

posterity....all of ones descendants, the opposite of ancestry, those who come after.

pottage....soup or stew.

pound....the KJV translators used the English currency unit called a "pound" to translate for a Greek unit of currency called a "mina."

"power"....as found in 1st Corinthians 11:10. The KJV translators used the word "power" hear to translate a word that speaks of "delegated authority." In this passage Paul is saying that women should have their heads covered when they pray or prophecy. And in this verse he states that a head covering is a sign of of "power," or delegated authority. He says that this should be done because of the angels. Paul understood that head gear in church was equivalent to chevrons, stripes and uniforms in an army. They are markings of rank. All angels have a rank. God sees all his creation in order and rank. As much as our modern culture hates this truth men and woman are of a different rank and authority. What that means is simply this. In the judgment husbands are going to be held by The Commander and Chief, Almighty God, as the first who must report. Men are going to be held more accountable and first accountable than are women. And so for the sake of the angels of God, who understand rank and chain of command, women are to display their rank as are men in the house of worship. To my thinking this gives women a certain advantage. They can turn to their husband and remind him that he is the one who will have to explain first why things happened or didn't happen in the family.

powers that be....in Romans 13:1 this phrase is referring to local, provincial and federal authorities, like police, sheriffs, armies, kings, presidents, governors, etc.

practise....practice.

prating....Speaking negative, berating, insulting or cutting words.

precept....a commandment, or a principal to be followed.

predestinate....to predetermine. See Romans 8:29. That verse says that those individuals that God knew before time, God set their course in advance that they would eventually be like the image of HIS Son, Jesus, that Jesus would lead this host of many brothers and sisters in Christ who would be in complete agreement with Christ. --> I believe the Spirit of God has shown me that predestination simply means that God is so wise, so aware of the past, present and future that before the foundations of the Earth, when God viewed the pattern of each human being, reviewed the blue prints and designs for each person, that HE knew, at that point, whether or not they would desire HIM. HE knew the choice they would make. When God viewed the pattern of one that was surely going to choose and love HIM, God said: "My son, My daughter I knew you would love ME. And I choose you before the foundations of the World to be MY child." I do not believe that predestination or election forced certain people into God's Kingdom anymore than a good weather forecaster forces the weather to be as he forecasts. But God is a perfect forecaster who never is wrong. And HE has elected or chosen those who HE knew would choose HIM. It has been predetermined. And I believe that God has shown me by revelation that this predetermined destiny is based on God's agreement with HIS own perfect knowledge of all things. I believe that when he looked upon the Blue Prints of John the Baptist that God knew that John would choose God. And so God smiled and said, "I choose you John to do a special work for ME. I know you will love me. And so I choose you and predetermine that you are MY child. And I believe that the opposite took place for those that God knew would rebel and would have no desire for HIM.

preeminence....first, superiority, loving to be first.

premeditate....to think out in advance, pre-plan, consider before the event.

presbyter....in the Greek this word literally means an older, mature, worthy, godly man. Ordained men are included, but other godly men are NOT excluded in the first century church from being presbyters. See the definition of elder!

presbytery....a counsel or assembly of elders. See "presbyter" and also see the definition of "elder!"

press....sometimes means "a crowd" because a thick crowd of people tends to "press" in on each other.

pretence....KJV spelling of "pretense."

pretense....a false claim of some position or accomplishment.

prevent....here's a word whose meaning has changed much since 1611! Back then it meant to "get ahead of," to precede, to anticipate and/or to hasten or speed up. Today it means to cut off or stop something before it happens. You can see how this change came to be. Back in 1611 when you PREVENTED something you got ahead of it. You figured it out in advance. And so slowly those who got ahead of something were able to cut it off at the pass and stop it. So the word took on a new meaning related to the first. That is why in 1st Thessalonians 4:15 where Paul wrote, "...we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not PREVENT them which are asleep," he was speaking about the order of the departure of the church to Glory. He was NOT talking about anyone hindering anybody, or stopping anybody. He meant that those believers who are alive at the coming of the Lord will not "get ahead of" or "anticipate" or "precede" those who have already died. For the dead in Christ will rise BEFORE those who are currently alive. They will arise, taking on their new bodies and ascend. Then the currently living believers will be changed into their new bodies and ascend. That verse is a matter of the ORDER, not a matter of any HINDRANCE. And so a person from 1611 walking through our forests and running across a sign that said "Only you can PREVENT forest fires" would understand it to mean that "Only you can get ahead of a forest fire." And they would scratch their heads and say, "Do these people have foot races with forest fires???"

pricks....sharply pointed sticks used to poke herd animals in order to direct them, goads.

principalities....in Romans 8:38 "principalities" refers to organized demonic forces, fallen angels who are assigned by Satan to be in charge of certain dark things. The Greek word this word translates means "first in rank, first in time."

prise(d)....prize(d).

privily....privately.

privy....secretly or privately aware of information not commonly known.

profane(d)....to violate, to treat irreverently, using something in an unholy way.

professing....making an open and public declaration.

prophesy....in it's truest meaning it is to speak words from Heaven. These words from the Throne Room of God may reveal of future events, or they might encourage and heal, or they might glorify and praise God. However, these words must be from above. If they come from the mind of the speaker then that one is merely speaking. The action of prophesying is controlled and operated by the Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit. This activity cannot be started by the speaker at any moment. It can only start when the Spirit of God moves upon that person. But the speaker has the power to stop.

propitiation....making "at onement," or making atonement, bringing God and man together.

proselyte(s)....a convert to a religion, usually meaning gentiles who have converted to the Jewish faith. See Acts 2:10.

"proving that this is very Christ"....this phrase in Acts 9:22 I find hard to understand. After looking at my interlinear I see what the KJV translators were trying to say. What they mean by this, or should have meant is: "proving that this One (Jesus) is the Christ, the Messiah."

provoke....incite, annoy, anger.

provocation....something that causes irritation, anger, exasperation.

prudent....having sound judgment.

prudence....this word is used to translate three different words in Hebrew and Greek. It is used to translate meanings such as trickery, discretion, intelligence, understanding, ethical insight and success. If you really are confused, in a certain passage of Scripture, about the use of this word ask the Lord to aid you. And if you have access to the New American Standard Bible check there too.

psalm....in 1st Corinthians 14:26 the Greek word appears to refer to any of the Psalms in the Book of Psalms. In other places the word "psalm" refers to a song or a poem set to music; the Greek is a different word in those passages.

Ptolemais....a city on the coast of the province of Syria, about ten miles airline Northeast above Mount Carmel. This city was also known as Acco.

publicans....KJV's word for "tax collectors."

publick....public.

published....gossiped and spoke the information repeatedly in public and to friends and strangers alike. Jesus would ask those he healed not to tell, but they "published" it all about.

puffed....inflated, usually related to pride.

"puffed up"....full of pride, feeling superior to others and feeling above one's fellows.

Put....a part of Libya.

pulse....from a Hebrew word in the book of Daniel that literally means, "things sown." Daniel and his friends were asking to be fed a pure vegetarian diet.

purge....separate from, to clean by removing that which is objectionable.

purged....cleansed, purified, washed away.

purloining....Found only in Titus 2:10. Today the word we use to communicate this meaning is "embezzling." Paul was reminding those who work under the authority of others, slaves in this case, not to steal or embezzle from the ones they are working for.

purple....purple was a rare color to see in the first century. The only way of obtaining purple was a dye produced from a certain shell fish. Only wealthy and noble families could afford this color. The trade in purple dye was a lucrative business.

Puteoli....a town on the Bay of Naples. Paul and his guards landed here on their way to Rome. Today this town is known as Pozzuoli.

quaternions....squads, each squad has four men. You find this word in Acts 12:4 where Peter is guarded by four squads of four men, a total of 16 guards. Probably each squad took a six hour shift of duty.

"queen of the south"....In Luke 11:31 Jesus uses this phrase. HE was speaking of the visit of the Queen of Sheba to the court of Solomon. See First Kings, chapter 10 in the Old Testament.

quench....to put out or extinguish a fire, a flame, or a power, like the power of the Holy Spirit. This is generally a very negative thing in the Scriptures. In Psalm 104:11 this word is used to speak of bursting or satisfying thirst.

quick....the living one(s).

quicken....you will find this word in Romans 8:11. When Jesus was raised to life from the grave HE came forth in a body that had more life than it had before HIS death. That new body was able to eat, able to teleport, able to go through walls, able to materialize and de-materialize. It was beyond flesh and blood! That is why in Revelation 1:18 Jesus declares that "I AM HE that liveth..." Jesus could not say that statement if HE had the same level of life that you and I have. If HIS life was like ours HE would have had to say, "I LIVE," or "I AM one that is alive." But when HE said "I AM HE that liveth..." it could only mean that all others are dead in comparison to HIM, that HIS resurrected life is so far beyond HIS earthly life that earthly life in comparison is death. That is why Paul tells us in Romans 8:11 that the Holy Spirit that lives within Spirit-filled believers is the ONE that will "quicken" or make alive, or raise us up like Jesus was raised up. It will be the Holy Spirit who lives within Spirit-filled ones who changes them, who causes their mortality to become immortality, thus quickening them, taking them to the same level of life that Jesus obtained in HIS resurrection. That is why Paul calls Jesus "the firstborn from the dead" in Colossians 1:18. HE is the first...but we can be next to receive that body through the power of the Holy Ghost. This will happen at "the twinkling of an eye" time spoken of by Paul. Some people call "the twinkling," the Rapture.

quickeneth....to make alive, to revive, to make whole, to return life to.

quietness....This word is used to translate seven different original language words. This word can therefore mean quiet, at ease and carefree, secure, relaxed, tranquil, prosperity, health, peaceful, and being still.

quit....The word "quit" appears only once in the New Testament and that one time it appears in the unique phrase "quit you like men." You will find this in 1st Corinthians 16:13. The word "quit" appears only four times in the Old Testament. The phrase "quit you like men" means "act like men." In the Old Testament the word "quit" is used to translate Hebrew words meaning "to exist," "to be bare" and "to be innocent."

rabbi....Hebrew word for teacher, master.

raca....this is some kind of "put down" word of 30 A.D.. We are not exactly sure what it means, maybe "empty head" or "inferior." I imagine it is good that we do not know it's exact meaning. Perhaps it is more crude and more cruel than we wish to know.

railed....spoken bitterly, rudely, reproachfully, harshly.

railer....one who speaks bitterly, rudely, reproachfully or harshly.

railings....this word is used to translate a Greek word that is speaking about unholy or impure speech.

raiment....clothing.

Rama....an alternate spelling for Ramah. See Ramah below.

Ramah....there is at least two and perhaps three locations named Ramah in the Bible. We are most familiar with Samuel's city of Ramah located five miles North of Jerusalem, two miles North of Gibeah, three miles East of Gibeon and two miles West of Geba. **Another Ramah was located in the far North of Israel. It was a border town in the Tribal area of Asher and may have been so near the border that it could have been developed by both the tribe of Asher and Naphtali. Or there may have been two towns up there named Ramah, one in each tribal zone. This area would be in the general neighbor hood of the Phoenician city of Tyre.

ravening....preying, voraciously devouring.

ravens....large black birds, larger than a crow, but smaller than a black turkey vulture.

ravin....something taken as prey.

reasonable....logical, rational, appropriate.

rebuke....to speak sharply in an attempt to correct or to cause one to stop and cease doing something.

receipt of custom....a KJV phrase for a tax collector's place of business.

reckon....to count, figure up, compute, calculate.

reckoned....counted, figured, computed, calculated.

recompense....the KJV translators used this word to translate six different Hebrew and Greek words. Numbers 5:7 and 8; Hosiah 12:2 -- to return or restore. Ruth 2:12; Job 34:33; Proverbs 20:22; Isaiah 65:6; Jeremiah 16:18, 25:14, 50:29 -- to be safe, to reciprocate. 2nd Samuel 19:36; Joel 3:4 -- to benefit, or requite, to wean. Ezekiel 7:3, 4, 8, 9; 9:10; 11:21; 16:43; 17:19; 23:49 -- to give. Luke 14:14 and 2nd Thessalonians 1:6; Hebrews 10:30 -- to requite good or evil. Romans 12:17 -- to give away.

reconciling....restoring to a place of favor with God.

redeemed....bought back, rescued, ransomed, liberated from captivity, freed from all liability or obligation.

redeeming....see redemption below.

redemption....in 1st Corinthians 1:30 Jesus Christ is described as our "redemption." He is the price of our being bought back from darkness and from the clutches of Hell. Redemption can mean "ransom payment," or "deliverance." I like to think of how the poor often gather aluminum beverage cans and then take them to the "redemption" center where the valuable aluminum is saved from destruction in a land fill. The redemption center pays, sometimes a $1.00 per pound, for the discarded cans. Then the aluminum is made into something worthwhile again.

redound....means to super abound, to become majorly abundant, like a giant star burst exploding in beautiful, radiant colors in a fireworks display.

regeneration....the simple understanding of this is to generate again, or regenerate. But the supernatural truths tied to this word in the Bible force more to be said. This word "regeneration" is about something so glorious. Jesus touches on it in Matthew 19:28 as HE gives the 12 disciples a glimpse of the supernatural renovations that are going to take place when Jesus sits on the Throne of Glory.

reign....to rule, to be in power, to control, to be in office, to have responsibility and oversight of.

reins....today this word immediately makes us think of how a horseman controls his mount, the leather cords that connect to the bit in a horse's mouth. But in the KJV this word can mean several things. It can be referring to a part of the human body, areas near or around the waist, the loins. Job 16:13 is speaking of the torso or waist being cut open. Also the word is used to refer to a person's inner most being, their heart, their control center, their mind. Revelation 2:23 uses the word "reins" to refer to the inner most control center of a person.

Remaliah....nothing is known of this man except that he was the father of the murdering usurper of the Northern Kingdom of Israel's throne, Pekah.

remission....deliverance from, sending away of. In regard to sins, they are sent away, buried in the sea of God's forgiveness, and forgetfulness. Today we use the root word "remit." Bill collectors tell us to "remit," or send our payment away to them.

remit....send away.

remnant....a piece of the original, a part of the whole. Just as in a carpet store you can buy a "remnant." That is a small portion of an original roll of carpet. The major portion of the carpet has already been sold. God is going to have a "remnant" of HIS people who truly love HIM, who will truly go all the way with HIM. There are some Jews and some non-Jews who will go part way, some of the way, but they will not go all the way with God. The "remnant" will be saved. Jesus says that "few" will ultimately find eternal life as compared to the vast numbers who are lost because they were not willing to go all the way with God.

Remphan....KJV spelling of Rephan, referring to the Babylonian name for the god of Saturn.

rend....to tear, often meaning to tear ones clothing as a sign of great shock, or great sadness, or great tragedy. Can also be used of animals attacking people, rending them, tearing them.

render....to give.

rent....a tear in a piece of cloth or something that can be torn. When used as a verb "rent" means "to tear" or "tore."

repent....to feel sorrow and grief for your sins and to turn away from the sin and wrongful ways.

repentance....the process of repenting. Every person coming to Jesus Christ for salvation must come in repentance, admitting sin and failure and determined to turn away from all sin. See "repent" above. **NOTE: In Romans 11:29 we have a very important Scripture that uses "repentance." In that Scripture the word is used in a slightly different way. Let me just paraphrase that scripture's meaning for you to get to the bottom line: "The gifts and calling of God are irrevocable." In other words God doesn't take back what HE gives even if the person or group of persons fails and falls. The Jews will always be HIS chosen people no matter how they have failed. (God, however, does not force people into Heaven because of HIS irrevocable callings and gifts. We can still turn our backs on HIM. But HE never turns HIS back on us.)

repenteth....repents. See repent above.

reproach....to bring shame and disgrace upon.

reproaches....things that bring shame and disgrace upon someone or some group.

reproachest....insult, shaming, disgracing.

reprobate(s)....depraved, unprincipled, failing the test, worthless.

reproved....correct, chide, to argue, to be correct, to confute, to admonish. As you can see the word is used to translate a number of words in the original languages of the Bible.

requite....this word is used to translate about five original language words. It can mean to wean a child, to give something, to make or do something, to return something or to give it back, to return a kindness, or even to reward.

rereward....When I first found this word in the KJV I thought I was seeing a typographical or typesetter's error. But, this is a real KJV word. It is only found in the Old Testament in Numbers 10:25 where it refers to the fact that the tribe of Dan was the "rear guard" of all the other tribes; Joshua 6:9 and 13 where it also means "rear guard"; 1st Samuel 29:2 where it used to tell us that David and his men were proceeding along in the REAR part of the movement of the armies; Isaiah 52:12 and Isaiah 58:8 also use this word to refer to the "rear guard."

resemble....compare.

residue....that which remains after a part is taken away.

resort....In Mark 10:1 we find this word used to mean "return," or "come back again," "went after," "followed after." We see this word again in John 10:41 in the past tense, "resorted."

restitution....restoring to the rightful owner, making things right and good.

resurrection....when Jesus was raised from the dead HE arose in a body that was eternal, yet more solid than "flesh and blood," and yet a body able to teleport to various locations, a body that could eat, and yet need not eat, a body that could materialize and de-materialize, or at least move from one dimension to another. The Bible says that Jesus was the first with a human body to be changed in that manner. What happened to HIM is resurrection and this is promised to all HIS faithful followers, not at death but in the "end times." ***However, the term resurrection is sometimes used to refer simply to life after death. Jesus speaks of Abraham as alive, that God is the God of the living. And therefore Jesus makes the point that resurrection is a reality because God is the God of the living, even those whose body has gone to the grave, but were God's people; they live.

revelation....knowledge, understanding, insights that are not gained by research, study or investigation, but instead these truths are gained by a Divine, direct from Heaven, imprinting within the individual who receives that revelation.

revelings....immoral partying and carousing.

revenge....vindicate, avenge, punish, retaliate.

revile....defame, vilify, scoff at, use bad language against.

Rezin....the King of the City-State of Damascus beginning in 738 B.C. He died in 732 B.C. At the time that King Ahaz was reigning in Jerusalem over the Southern Kingdom Rezin desired to break free from the domination of Assyria. When Ahaz wouldn't join him he allied with the Northern Israeli Kingdom ruled by King Pekah. They in turn came against Ahaz. Ahaz in fear did not listen to the wise advice of Isaiah the prophet who indicated there was little to fear.

Rhegium....a city on the Southern tip of Italy where Paul and his guards stopped on their travels toward Rome. Today this city is known as Reggio Calabria, or just Reggio.

Rhodes....this was a Greek island with a city of the same name just off the coast of what is now Turkey and between the coastal cities of Miletus and Patara. It is truly just off shore from the Southwestern corner of Turkey.

rid....remove, snatch away.

riddance....act of removing something undesirable.

righteousness....right relationship with God Almighty with faith in the Lord alone, that HE is the source of purity and holiness that brings that right relationship. Also including a change of behavior, a turn around that causes the person who has this quality to walk a higher and better way. This is a complex term beyond a simple definition. In short God has got it and we need it and only HE can give it!

rigour....rigor

Rimmon....a town in Southern Judah, nine miles North, Northeast of Beersheba.

roll....scroll.

Roman....in Acts 22:25 Paul tells the guard about to have him beaten that he is a Roman. No beating occurs because Paul is saying, "I hold Roman citizenship." Very, very few residents of the Roman world held citizenship. Those who were citizens had rights. They could not be punished until they first had a chance to appear in court. Those who were not citizens could be tortured and even killed. If you were not a citizen of Rome you were nothing! That is why Jesus Christ could so quickly be executed. The captain told Paul that he had bought his citizenship with much money. Paul said that he was born a citizen. There were even two classes of citizenship. And Paul was in that more elite group.

room....in Acts 24:27 we see the word "room" used in the way that today we would use the word "office." Other times in the KJV the word "room" is used to mean "vacancy" or "space."

rudiments....basic building blocks that go together to form some belief, some truth, some understanding. We are warned in Colossians 2:8 to be very careful of the basic building blocks of the truth of this world. As wonderful as the five senses are, they are very incomplete in gathering total and final truth. God's Word is the only safe ground. Science may work in the sand box of the earthy laboratory. But in the context of the limitless creation of God, some so called scientific ideas and proofs begin to be useless. Taking science as your yard stick works okay on earth, and maybe for a few light years out into space. But trying to figure out all things with science is like a man trying to measure the distance from Los Angeles to New York using a 12 inch ruler and a pencil, making little lines on the pavement of the interstate and filling his clipboard with hash marks. Will he get a good answer??? Probably not! Science is a tool created by the advanced cockroach-minds of men. I say "cockroach-minds" because the mind of God and Christ makes our minds look very moronic in deed!!!

rue....a strong smelling shrub, an herb that was used in certain medicines.

rumours....rumors.

rush....in Isaiah 9:14 this word refers to a plant, the "bulrush."

Sabaoth....this word, found in Romans 9:29 and James 5:4, means "hosts" or "armies." This is where we get the phrase "Lord of Hosts." Our God is the Lord of massive armies! Our God is glorious!

Sabbath....the seventh day of the week. The Jewish day of worship. The seventh day is Saturday. The Sabbath actually begins at sundown or about 6 P.M. on Friday night. Sabbath ends at 6 P.M. or sundown Saturday night. This Old Testament type shadows the Sabbath Rest of the inward man explained in Hebrews chapter Four. Christians who have come into deeper things recognize that every moment of life becomes Sabbath when the Holy Spirit baptizes a believer.

sackcloth....an outfit worn during mourning and repentance times. It was dark, probably black and made of either goat hair or camel's hair. Experts argue as to the shape of it. Some say that it was like a large grain sack with holes cut for head and arms. Others say that it was a small garment like a loin clothe, which may have left the person somewhat exposed.

Sadducees....second to the Pharisees in power in Jesus day. These fellows were more interested in the here and now. They did not believe in the resurrection from the dead, or an after life. They were more interested in having the proper political connections. They were less popular than the Pharisees and considered liberal and impure. The one thing the Pharisees and Sadducees could agree on was that Jesus was a huge political problem that they needed to come together on to remove.

saidst....say.

saints....those in the process of being made holy. The Bible's perspective concerning the word "saints" is that the word refers to believers who are in the process of being made "holy." Saints are NOT simply those who have gone to Heaven and are on somebody's list to be voted into the saint club. When Paul uses this word he is referring to all believers who are whole- heartedly and in purity seeking to grow deeper in God, from the newest Christian to the most senior believer. Believers who have gone to Heaven are all saints. They do not need anyone on earth or any organization on earth to set them up as a saint.

saith....says.

Salamis....an important city on the island of Cyprus's East coast where Paul and Barnabas traveled to.

Salim....an uncertain area near another uncertain area called Aenon where John the Baptist ministered, not far from Jericho and near the Jordan river.

Salmone....a point on the Eastern coast of the island of Crete. Today that point is known as Cape Sidero.

salutations....the act of giving out greetings, paying respects, welcomings, honorings.

salute....greet.

Samaria....was the capital city of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. The northern ten tribes withdrew to themselves because Solomon's son said he would be a more harsh king than his father. To keep the ten tribes from returning and worshiping in Jerusalem the golden calf idols were set up in the North. This greatly increased idol worship in that area and distorted the Jewish faith there. Eventually Samaria fell to the Assyrian invaders, as God's judgment came, and the Ten Tribes were carried away. It has been a great mystery as to exactly where the Ten Tribes disappeared to. In Jesus' day Samaria was more than a city. It was the region inhabited by the Samaritan race, the ancestors of the peoples that Assyria had re-populated the area with. A few pure Jews had escaped deportation and inter-married with the new imported peoples. Thus a half-breed Jewish presence existed in Samaria in Jesus' day. The new importees received some Jewish religious thought. It was a tradition in ancient times that you needed to accept the local god or religion in order to have a blessed life. Needless to say the Jews of Jesus' time had no use for the half-breed Samaritans. [See Samaritans]

Samaritans....after Assyria killed or deported the vast majority of the ten northern Jewish tribes in 722 b.c. Assyria imported peoples from other areas to fill up the empty real estate again. The new imports had little success and knowing that the former inhabitants worshiped Yahweh they obtained priests from Judah to train them in the local religion. Their reasoning being that the local god must be followed, and so "We better worship the local god because we haven't been and the local god is angry. So let's learn about him and worship so our crops won't fail." There were a few Jews left in the area that these new people's inter-married with. The result was a group of people who thought themselves Jewish, but who had Jewish faith mixed up with other religions. The Samaritans refused to accept Jerusalem as their place to worship. They worshiped on a mountain near their capital of Samaria. The Jews detested the Samaritans and this hatred persisted even in Jesus' day.

Samos....an Ionian island in the Southeast Aegean Sea whose main town is called Samos. This Island is just off the coast of what is now Turkey.

Samothracia....a KJV spelling of the Island Samothrace in the Northeast Aegean Sea. Paul stopped here on his way to Macedonia. See Acts 16:11.

sanctified....having been purified and made holy and then set apart for the holy work of God.

sanctifieth....to purify and to make holy and to separate for Gods purposes.

sanctify....to make holy, to purify and to separate a person, place or thing for the sacred uses of God. It is NOT either or! It is both to purify and to separate.

Sarepta....From the Greek this is the word the KJV translators sometimes used to transliterate the name of the town of Zarephath. See Zarephath for more information.

Saron....KJV spelling of Sharon. See Sharon.

save....this word has two different KJV meanings. In Matthew 18:11 it means "to rescue." In Matthew 13:57 and Luke 8:51 it means "except."

saved....in Romans 10:13 Saint Paul tells us that "...whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." Down through the ages skeptics, scoffers and doubters have replied, "Saved from what?! We are not in bondage to anyone!! We are free, free thinkers. It's you Christians who need to get saved. You are all bound up in that limited religious thinking. We are totally free!" But, repenting, calling on the Name of Jesus, praying the sinner's prayer and believing on Christ Jesus as your only hope of salvation saves you from a one way trip to Hell and the Lake of Fire. Hell is full of free thinkers. Free thinkers are those who say "many roads lead to Heaven and Hell doesn't exist." If NASA engineers believed in "free thinking" they would not bother with the limited, precise mathematics of programming a trajectory into the computers of the Space Shuttle. They would just blast the shuttle into space and direct the astronauts to use a joystick and move the shuttle into proper orbit. They would ignore all the very exacting, narrow and limited parameters of the tiny window that the Shuttle must pass through in order to achieve a proper orbit. I'm glad my credit card company has a very limited and narrow way of calculating what I owe, otherwise they would just pull big numbers out of the air and make me pay for what I never bought. There is a horrible Hell to be saved from and a sad life here on Earth to be saved from. And Jesus has the only solution, the only rescue available. HE alone is the door to eternal life. HE alone is the gate to a truly better and pure and holy life. Everyone needs to get saved and no other religion or belief has the answer because they ALL lie outside the narrow, exacting doorway of salvation.

Saviour....Savior

savour....KJV spelling of savor which in the KJV usually means "flavor."

savour....today we spell this word "savor."

savourest....delight in the flavor of.

scarlet....a brilliant red dye extracted from the body of a female insect found on a certain kind of oak tree in the Middle East. A whole industry sprung up around dying fabric bright red with this ancient technology.

sceptre....scepter. (Notice the difference in spelling.) This is a special staff held by a king that is ornately designed and decorated. It signifies the king's great authority and power.

schism....a disagreement strong enough to divide people from each other.

science....the scientific method had not been developed in Bible times. And so this word merely means "knowledge." This word is not speaking about anything that happens today in a science lab. But it does tend to lean toward the knowledge of men rather than the knowledge of God. In 1st Timothy 6:20 Paul speaks of "...oppositions of science falsely so called..." Paul is referring to how mankind so often believes their knowledge to be true knowledge, and they may argue based on it. But their knowledge is sometimes not correct. God is the only one with perfect truth.

scribes....in New Testament times these were men who were in a class of which some copied the Word of God. The only way to pass the Word on in those days was by copying it. The Jews were very particular about accuracy. So these "Scribes" are a pretty picky group. They were also teachers of the people. Apparently the rabbi-teacher types were among the scribes. They were the "experts" in Jewish law, interpretation of Genesis through the book of Numbers in the Old Testament.

scrip....a leather bag or pouch for carrying food on a trip.

scripture....the Holy Word of God, the Bible.

scorched....burned, usually from some kind of exposure.

score....a score is 20. For example six score would be 120.

scorn....disdain, extreme contempt.

scourge....beat with sticks, lashes or whips publicly.

Scythian(s)....savage, nomadic warrior people who swept out of Southern Russia on horse back. They came down into the Holy lands to pillage, kill and raid. Their time period was perhaps 500 years or more before Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, the memory of their vileness persisted even to Saint Paul's time. Paul uses this word to paint a picture of the worst of the barbarians of his day.

sealed....marked. The Holy Spirit has revealed that not only is this a mark, but to be sealed can also mean as a gasket seals an engine from leaks, or as paint totally seals a piece of metal so that it is protected and will not rust. We need to be sealed by the Holy Spirit. In other words, we need to be marked by God and suited up, covered, anointed by the Spirit of God so that we are not exposed to the full powers of the enemy.

Sebat....eleventh month on the Jewish calendar.

sect....In Acts 28:22 this word appears. The Roman Jews refer to the followers of Jesus of Nazareth as a "sect." A "sect" is usually a smaller religious group that has broken away from a larger one. "Sect" means "section" or "part of."

security....in Acts 17:9 this word means something like what we would call "bail" for a prisoner released from jail.

sedition....stirring up discontent, rebellion, resistance, insurrection.

seed....sometimes this word is used to mean "children." See Luke 20:28. Other times this word can mean what the farmer sows. Also this word is used to refer to sperm in the reproductive process.

seer....1st Samuel 9:9 tells us that a "seer" is the old name for a "prophet."

seest....see.

seeth....sees.

seethe....to boil, to cook by boiling.

Seleucia (of Syria)....a city on the Mediterranean coast down the Orontes River from Syrian Antioch. It was the first stop on Paul and Barnabas's original missionary journey. The city is located five miles North of the mouth of the Orontes river. Today the city Samandag is located in about the same spot. Long ago the city ceased to be a commercial sea port do to ecological change. Salt deposits from the Orontes river turned the harbor into a marsh.

selfsame....that very, the same.

sepulchre...tomb, usually a walk in vault or hewn out cave. Notice also that KJV spells it with the two last letters reversed, "re" rather than "er."

seraphims....celestial beings that are in the presence of Almighty God. They have three pair of wings. Isaiah saw these beings in his vision. They may be the same beings seen by Ezekiel and John the beloved that are in the presence of God shouting "Holy, Holy, Holy."

serjeants....KJV spelling of "sergeants." In Acts 16:35 some translations have used the word "policeman" to translate the Greek work involved.

set....sometimes means "sit."

Seven Stars in Amos 5:8....The group of seven stars in the Constellation Taurus called The Pleiades.

sever....to part or divide, separate.

severally....separately, distinctly, privately, uniquely.

severity....toughness, rigorousness, hard discipline.

shall---after that....In regard to Acts 1:8 Lucky Hope wrote: "In a missive you wrote some weeks ago about a concordance you are compiling (or is dictionary more accurate?) anyway, it seems to me you invited input from "studiers" of the Bible. (I like that term better than "students") At any rate, I came across a much used phrase, that is used without what I feel is the proper lexicology. The verse (per above subject) states that "You shall receive power "after that" the Holy Ghost is come upon you, which, in the more commonly used text, implies that the Holy Ghost comes upon you after which you receive 'one-time' power which lasts as long as the recipient does. Up to now, nobody that I ever heard of, received power that was there for him, to be turned on and off like a faucet. As you already know, I delve into Greek and Hebrew terminologies, and, briefly, the words "after that" are not appropriate for the first Christians, nor are they for the present-day Christians either. In my studies, a much more accurate translation is not "after that" but "whenever," which bears the connotation that when the Man of God is confronted with a situation, task, problem, or any level of ministry which requires the power of the Holy Ghost, at that moment the Holy Ghost comes upon him (her), and he/she receives adequate power for that need to be met. I'm sure Acts 1:8 couldn't occur without the Baptism of the Holy Ghost, but what I believe is that whenever and wherever a situation or instance arises where you or I as a vessel of the Most High God, Acts 1:8 promises that the Holy Ghost will come upon us and that power will wield us as we wield a hammer or shovel. shamefacedness....simply means modesty. When this word appears in reference to women it does not mean that the women go about being put down or walking behind their husband like property. NO!! This simply means that the women are so tender and modest that if they were accidently exposed in some way they would be very ashamed. Godly women don't show off their good looks. They don't flirt. And Godly men don't desire for their wife to expose themselves in order to make other men covetous. These are practices of those in darkness and sin!

"shamefully entreated"....You can find this phrase in 1st Thessalonians 2:2. It means to spitefully or wickedly use or treat.

Sharon....the coastal plain from the city of Joppa to just South of Mount Carmel.

sheaf....singular of sheaves. See sheaves below.

sheaves....when perhaps 50 or 100 stocks of harvested grain are laid in a bundle and a cord is tied about them. Then a sheaf (a single sheave) can stand upright. This is an Old World method of bailing, a first step in harvesting or gathering grain before the advent of modern machinery.

Shechem....this word is the name of three people and a city, the city being the most well known use of the word. 1. Shechem was the son of Hamor the Hivite. This fellow raped Jacob's daughter, Dinah. 2. A grandson of Joseph through Manasseh. 3. The second son of Shemida of the tribe of Manasseh, possibly the same person as the person described in number two above, it is not known. 4. A Canaanite city that Israel took becoming important politically. In the New Testament some believe that Sychar of John 4:5 may actually be the city of Shechem. Shechem is located forty miles North of Jerusalem between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal.

shed....to pour forth, to flow out, as in blood or water pouring out.

shekel....in earlier times a measure of weight; later a coin. As a weight it was 8 to 16 grams for the Babylonians. In Israel it was about 11 grams. In later times there was a silver coin called a shekel that weighed about 14 grams.

shewbread....holy bread placed out each day fresh in the Temple of God in Old Testament times. It was not to be eaten by anyone but priests and only in special ways.

shewbread....today we would spell it "showbread."

Shinar....another name for Babylonia.

shipmen....sailors.

Shittim....a location immediately Northeast of the Dead Sea. Shittim is the location where Israel camped just before crossing Jordan into Canaan land. Shittim wood is Acacia Tree wood.

Shigionoth....[Hab. 3:1] a musical term meaning extremely wild and emotional.

Shiloh....this was a city in the tribal area given to Ephraim ten miles Northeast of Bethel. It was just east of the road that ran from Shechem to Jerusalem. It is the location beginning in Joshua's era where the Tent Tabernacle was set up in the Promised Land. There the Tabernacle with the holy Ark of the Covenant remained until Samuel's days when the Ark was captured by the Philistines. After the capture of the Ark Shiloh was never again the center of Israel's focus. David took Jerusalem and the Ark was moved there where Solomon later built a temple to house it.

Shiloah, waters of....in Isaiah 8:6 the phrase "waters of Shiloah" refer to an aqueduct in Jerusalem connect to the pool of Siloam. The word "shiloah" actually means aqueduct.

shod....a past tense of the verb "shoe."

shunned....avoided, turned back from.

Sidon....See "Zidon" below.

sign....a miracle or supernatural occurrence that has been accomplished by God Almighty which has a message within it. Jesus turned the water into wine at the marriage celebration in Cana of Galilee not simply to supply a need where the wine supply had run out. But Christ did the miracle to say that God still supports God's invention of family and marriage. God likes marriage and family to be done in God's way. And also that miracle said that God saves HIS best until last. God did not send Christ first...but Adam came first. And that miracle says many other things as well. God's signs and words are infinite, limitless.

signet....a ring with a unique design used to press the owners signature into clay or wax.

Siloam....a pool of fresh water in Jerusalem. It is part of the famous water system that brought water from a spring through an underground aqueduct over 1700 feet in length. Jesus refers to a tower that fell in the area of the Pool of Siloam that killed eighteen people. Jesus sent a man to wash in the Pool and by obeying regained his sight.

silverlings....are shekels of silver, silver coins.

similitude....looks like another, a copy or almost a copy.

Sina....KJV spelling for Mount Sinai. See Sinai below.

Sinai, Mount....the holy mountain where God gave Moses the law. It is very important that today's believers understand that the real Mount Sinai is probably NOT located on the Sinai Peninsula as has been taught for so many generations. Saint Paul tells us in Galatians 4:25 that Sinai is located in Arabia. Scholars are currently debating whether or not a fairly recent discovery of a possible Sinai site in Saudi Arabia is for real. The Arabian Mountain is even burned at the top! Saudi Arabia now keeps it off limits and guarded. But pictures have been taken before Saudi security became so tight, and are posted on the Internet. You can check out some links below. We need to remember that some scientific people don't want the Bible to be proven correct and for that reason they become quite worked up at such new information. Also you need to keep in mind that people who make these discoveries sometimes reap an income through publishing and going on the lecture circuit, getting paid good money to sell products and show their slides, pictures and videos. But, this new info is very compelling. So read and make up your own mind as the Spirit of God leads you. I believe Saint Paul was correct when he wrote that Sinai was in Arabia! single....Luke 11:34 uses the phrase "thine eye is 'single'." Here "single" means "clear," focused, able to judge justly because all is in focus.

singleness....in the KJV this word has nothing whatsoever to do with wither a person is married or not. Instead this word means total focus, no double vision, totally tuned into one goal and one theme of life.

Sion....another KJV spelling of "Zion." See Zion.

Sisera....the general who led the Canaanite armies against Barak, and Deborah the prophetess. The Caananite's chariots were defeated by a flash flood on the river Kishon.

sith....an old english word for our word "since." "Sith" is only found in one place in the KJV, in Ezekiel 35:6.

sixth hour....12 o'clock, noon.

sixtyfold....sixty times or multiplied by sixty.

slack, slackened....inactive, dull, barely working.

slandereth....defame, vilify, malign, spreads untruth about.

slain....killed, executed.

sleight....this word is only found in Ephesians 4:14. We think of it as a quick move of the hand that a magician uses to fool us into believing something false. But the word Paul used, that the KJV translators were trying to translate, is the word for one of two dice. Dice can be "loaded." That means they can be weighted so that they come up on a certain number, again and again. With "loaded" dice a gambler can rig a game and cheat his opponents. So this word, "sleight," is talking about "fraud," "deceit" and falsehood. Paul is telling us that religious teachers can very cleverly fool us into believing their doctrine. And "their" doctrine might seem like God's doctrine when in fact it is a lie! Make sure the Bible backs up what you believe, and backs it up strongly! Make sure you *DON'T* have to stand on your head, close one eye and read backwards to get the Bible to back up a truth!! I'm being humorous...but what I mean is that we need to make sure that anything we believe is very, very clearly stated in God's word, preferably in more than one place! Don't let some teacher fool you!!

"slow bellies"....This little phrase is found in Titus 1:12. It means "lazy gluttons."

slumber....sleep.

smote, smite, smitten....to strike or strongly touch, to suddenly bring upon someone or something a certain effect.

Smyrna....This important city, which still exists today as the modern Izmir, is located on the West coast of Turkey. The church in this city is mentioned as one of the Seven Churches Jesus speaks of in the Book of Revelation. Even to this day the city is a commercial success story. It has a very protected port and connects to important transportation links headed East. This city was very loyal to Rome and thus persecution became a major factor for the church that existed here in the first and second century.

snare....a trap.

snuffed....sniffed with contempt, turned up your nosed at something.

sober....this word is used to translate five different words in the original languages. It can mean self-controlled, to disipline and/or correct, to be temperate and circumspect, to abstain from alcohol, to be in a correct or very alert state of mind.

sobriety....self-control and propriety in behavior.

soever....in any way, to any extent or degree. of any kind, whatever.

sojourn....to dwell in a place as a temporary resident, even though the time of stay might be hundreds of years, almost like our word "refugee," but a bit different since there is no war that displaces those who sojourn.

Solomon's Porch....KJV translates the original Greek word as "porch." Today translators want to translate that word as "portico" or "colonnade." This feature of the Temple of Jesus' time, mentioned in John 10:23, was built by King Herod. It is not from Solomon's time. Solomon's temple was destroyed by the Babylonians. This portico was on the East side of the walking area that surrounded the entire Outer Court of the Temple. A portico is an architectural term for an open area that is covered by a roof, and the roof is supported by columns.

soothsayer(s)....a person who foretells the future by divination, aided by dark powers. They forecast by reading natural or other signs. This is an evil practice of those who are knowingly or unknowing sinning against the Lord. Those who do this are servants of Satan. See "diviners."

sop....piece of bread soaked in gravy, wine or other liquid.

sorceries....See sorcery below.

sorcery....This word and the plural, "sorceries," need some important explanation. The KJV uses them to translate two types of words in the Hebrew and Greek. Those other words that KJV is translating are equivalent to our words for "magic" and "drugs/potions." It is so important that we as believers realize that there are workers of magic and there are workers of dark powers. Magic workers are those who use deception and trickery and knowledge to get a following and manipulate people, which is a mild form of witchcraft. I call them "want to be" people. They truly want to have dark powers, but since they either don't believe in it or they simply don't have it they manufacture a fog of tricks to fool people into following them. Then there are and always have been people who have tapped into dark powers to one degree or another. The materialists and scientific folks don't believe these real workers of darkness exist, but they do exist. These workers get their power from the forces of darkness, from Satan. They are generally more clever and they may deal in drugs since there is a connection between drugs and the demonic. Christians need to beware of both groups. It takes Spirit baptized Christians to deal with these type of people, especially with those who have true dark powers. Because so much of the church today doesn't even receive the truths about the Holy Ghost, Holy Spirit they are easy marks for dark powers. RUN AWAY FROM OCCULT WORKERS. Only Saint Paul types can deal with them! Counseling cannot cure those who work in dark powers!!

sore....Most often this word means "very" as in very angry. However, there are some places like Mark 9:26 where "sore" means "greatly, terribly, largely, seriously."

sorrow....grief. In Luke 22:45 it says that the disciples slept because of "sorrow." This may mean that the heavy discussions at the passover table, discussion of betrayal and of the cup signifying Jesus' blood of the new covenant may have generated so many internal questions and wonderings that they were exhausted and depressed.

sorrows....In Matthew 24:8 and in Mark 13:8, where Jesus describes events of the end times, we find in the KJV almost the same phrase: "...these are the beginning(s) of sorrows." The word the apostles penned in their original Greek gospels is a word that refers to "birth pangs" and/or the pangs of death. If you have been present at the birth of a child you know that the pangs of labor come faster and faster, harder and harder. The mother often has difficulty catching her breath. During the powerful contractions she has trouble taking in air, so she tries to catch up breathing in between contractions. But, as the birthing process proceeds contractions often come faster and faster and harder and harder. At the birthing of my own children I found myself praying very hard for my wife. As we enter the era of the end times we are witnessing calamities coming faster and faster, harder and harder.

sower....in ancient times there were of course no planting machines. Crops were not even planted in rows. Instead the farmer or a farm worker would enter a prepared field and very skillfully throw the seed. Today we might call that method "broadcasting" the seed. But they called it sowing.

sown....planted, having put seed into the ground to grow a crop.

spake....spoke.

spew....vomit.

spikenard....today this aromatic herb from India is known as Nard. The roots and stem can be made into a fragrant ointment.

spin....to spin or make yarn or thread. Even before spinning wheels early peoples had to spin fiber by rubbing it in hands in order to produce thread and yarn for making garments.

Spirit, the....we can find an example of "the Spirit" in Romans 8:4. Paul is speaking of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Ghost, the Third Person of the Trinity, that part of the Trinity that is upon the Earth today. The Holy Spirit is a person! HE is not a vapor or a bird or oil, although those are symbols of or shadows or types of HIM. But the precious Spirit of God is a real person with a real personality. However, the Spirit does not draw attention to HIMSELF. He draws attention to God the Father and God the Son (Jesus). The Spirit is the Comforter that Jesus spoke of that Christ sent at Pentecost that teaches us all things.

stanched....blood flow stopped.

standard....a banner, flag or ensign used as a designator of a certain fighting unit or army. By reading or understanding the standard or flag one army can identify another, one battalion can identify another.

standardbearer....This word appears only in Isaiah 10:18. The Hebrew word seems to refer to the fluttering of a flag in the wind. A standardbearer is one who holds up or carries a battle flag or who holds up that unit's colors or designator, sometimes called an ensign.

stature....physical height, but can also mean standing or height of respect as in Luke 2:52

staves....used in the arrest of Jesus these were either wooden staffs or clubs of some kind. The group that came with Judas was armed with swords and staves.

stedfast....KJV spelling of "steadfast," meaning fixed, constant, firm, unwavering.

stedfastly....in a stedfast manner. Please see stedfast above.

stern....in Acts 27:29 this nautical term is used. It refers to the back or rear end of a ship or boat.

steward....a servant that has been given a higher level of responsibility. Such a steward might be in charge of planning, accounting, or even great amounts of money. Basically someone who is in charge of making decisions concerning someone else's property or wealth. We are stewards of God. We are in charge of things that truly belong to God Almighty.

stiffnecked....hard headed, stubborn, proud, unwilling to change even in the face of truth.

Stoicks....KJV spelling of Stoics. Stoics were those who followed the philosophy first taught by Zeno. Zeno who immigrated to Athens from Cyprus found in Athens a fertile ground where his ideas took root and spread throughout the Greek World becoming the dominant philosophy, even in the Roman World. Zeno's life spanned 332 to 262 b.c. Stoicism taught that the only good was "virtue" and that the only evil was "vice." A wise man is one who is unmoved by pain or pleasure, wealth or poverty, success or failure. A Stoic is one who never rocks the boat. He can live in any climate and be at peace with it. He obeys the laws of the land. Everything is ruled by destiny. So to the Stoic you just know that you are living your destiny. So get comfortable, whatever your destiny is. Don't get excited if you are rich and don't be sad you are poor, it's your destiny.

straitened....This is a word that the KJV translators used to translate six Hebrew and Greek words. Job 18:7 -- to be in distress. Job 37:10 -- distress. Proverbs 4:12 -- to be in distress. Ezekiel 42:6 -- to select, refuse, narrow. Micah 2:7 -- to curtail, cut short. Luke 12:50 -- to hold together. 2nd Corinthians 6:12 -- to hem in closely.

straitly....narrowly or strictly.

straightway....immediately.

"strake sail"...."struck sail," lowered the sail. As seen in Acts 27:17.

strawed....when something had been covered with straw the 1611 KJV translators used the word "strawed." They used this word to explain how the crowd "had spread" their coats and branches on the road for Jesus, seated on the colt of a donkey, to enter Jerusalem.

stricken....advanced in years.

strife....wrangling, contention, debate, quarreling.

striker....one who settles matters with their fists, is quick to get into a fight, a person who commonly resorts to physical violence when they perceive a problem.

strive....contending, struggling, sometimes in opposition, other times not opposing but just pulling hard to achieve something.

striveth....see strive above.

stronghold or strong hold....a literal place or a spiritual place that has been strengthened, reinforced, armed and secured such that an army or some force can hold out in that place, almost totally sheltered and protected. David established strong holds where King Saul could not capture him. The Devil likes to build strong holds in lives where he can hide to come out and attack again.

strove....contended, struggled, sometimes in opposition, (a past tense of strive). See strive above.

stubble....what is left of the dried stalks on a harvested field. A very dry and combustible, useless material that is worthy only to be burned or plowed under!

subtility....subtilty

stumblingblock....a person or thing that becomes so confusing, or so offensive, or so upsetting that a person or a people cannot progress further. Jesus Christ is a "stumblingblock" to some people. Many cannot see who HE truly is because they are so offended by HIM or upset with HIM.

subject....in Romans 13:1 this words means "submissive."

suborned....this word only appears in Acts 6:11. It means "wickedly and dishonestly, possibly through bribery" Stephen's opponents obtained men who would testify falsehoods against this young servant of the Lord.

subtil....this word is only found in the Old Testament in Genesis 3:1, 2nd Samuel 13:3 and Proverbs 7:10. It is used to translate three Hebrew words. Generally these word mean wise, intelligent, skillful, cunning, clever, to hide, to conceal.

subverting....corrupting, distorting, twisting.

Succoth....a city and a fertile valley all around it. The location is two miles North of the river Jabbok as it comes out of the Eastern hills on it's way to meet the Jordan river. The city was on a hill that sits above the fertile valley.

succoured....aided, helped, relieved.

succourer....a helper, a deliverer, an assistant, a patron.

succourer....today this word is spelled "succorer."

suffer....sometimes suffer means "allow." "Suffer the little children to come unto me..." --Jesus

sufficeth....satisfies the need of, meets the need of.

sumptuously....lavishly, magnificently, luxuriously.

sunder....apart, separate, as to cut apart, cut in pieces.

sup....earliest meaning is to sip into the mouth. Later meaning is to have supper or the evening meal.

superfluity....very great abundance. This word is only found in one place in the KJV and that is in James 1:21. James is inspired to tell the reader to turn away from their super abundance of naughtiness [sinful and wrong things] and to humbly receive the engrafted Word of God.

superfluous....this word is only found three times in the Bible. It appears twice in Leviticus. In Leviticus the word "superfluous," in a person or an animal, is referring to deformities or defects. Those with deformities are not to minister ceremonially. And animals with deformities are not to be offered as a sacrifice. [By the way, God is not opposed to handicapped people. But deformities are a side effect of evil entering into the creation. In the Old Testament God was working very hard to get HIS people to understand what purity and holiness are all about. God began to teach the concept of purity using the natural realm first. Later God was able to refocus that understanding of purity into HIS people's understanding of the spiritual realm. And so in that former day "CEREMONIAL cleanness and purity" was hyper important. Today SPIRITUAL purity and holiness are hyper important. God has slowly moved our focus from the natural to the supernatural, the spiritual. And that is why the focus has shifted from "ceremonial purity" to spiritual purity of the heart! Today a deformed person can minister just as effectively as a beauty contest winner.] ***In the New Testament the word "superfluous" only appears in Second Corinthians 9:1 where it means "more than is needed, super abundant." Paul was saying that it isn't necessary for him to write on "ministering to the saints" because that topic had been well covered in the past.

superscription....that which is written above or over something.

superstitious....this word appears only in Acts 17:22. The KJV translators were looking for a word that communicated what Paul said to the Athenians. He was saying: you people are too religious, overly religious, you've got so many god's you don't know what to do with them. You've even got a monument to the unknown God in case you missed one. I want to tell you about this unknown God.

supped....ate or drank.

suppliants....humble petitioners who offer up prayers.

supplication....prayer in general and a special kind of prayer as well, making humble requests and entreaties.

surfeiting....excessive eating and drinking.

surmisings....suspicion.

swaddling....strips of cloth used to wrap a new born baby. Throughout the Bible it was a custom to wrap the new born. This is not unusual. Other cultures wrapped their new born as well. American Indians come to mind as a group that wrapped newborns tightly.

swellings....in 2nd Corinthians 12:20 haughtiness, arrogance.

swine....pigs.

Sychar....the town where Jesus spoke to the woman at the well. The well being Jacob's well. This town is the same town known in Old Testament times as Shechem. The location was one and a half miles Southeast of the town of Nablus, in the Eastern section of the pass between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim.

sycomore....some KJV texts spell "sycamore" with a letter "o" between the "c" and the "m."

sycamine....the sycamore-fig tree.

Sychem....KJV spelling for Shechem, an important center for the Jews and by the Canaanites before them. Also Sychem (Shechem) is a the name of a person. See Shechem for more details.

synagogues....places of Saturday worship and teaching for Jews. The first synagogues developed when the Jews were carried off to Babylonia and their temple was destroyed. After their return and rebuilding of the temple the synagogue went on as a powerful training, worship and infrastructure mechanism. The synagogues go on today and have even influenced the Christian church.

Syracuse....a beautiful city on the Easter coast of the island of Sicily.

Syria....in Jesus time what is now Lebanon, including the city of Tyre on the coast of the Mediterranean was included in the province of Syria. So when it says that Jesus' fame spread through all Syria [in Matthew 4], as HE ministered near Capernaum by the Sea of Galilee, don't think so much of what is Syria today. Syria today is off to the North East of the Sea of Galilee some 50 to 70 miles. Jesus' fame may well have traveled that far. But it is more likely that HIS fame traveled out toward the Mediterranean.

Syrophenician....Phoenicia, what we call Lebanon today, containing the cities of Tyre and Sidon, was part of the Roman province of Syria. Today Syria is a country away from the sea coast with the city of Damascus as capital. But in Christ's time Syria was a much larger province. The Syrophenician woman mentioned in Mark's Gospel was a resident of a coastal area.

Tabeal....two persons in the Old Testament have this name. In Isaiah 7:6 the person is an Aramean and the Father of a son that Pekah of the Northern Kingdom and Rezin of Damascus wanted to install as king in Jerusalem, over Judah. *Second, Tabeal was an Aramean in the area of Samaria who was one of the persons who sponsored a letter to King Artaxerxes, the First, attempting to stop or impede the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple following the Babylonian captivity.

tabering....beating or drumming.

tabernacle....There are several words that get translated in the KJV as "tabernacle." These Hebrew and Greek words don't always mean a place of worship. They can mean a tent, a hut, a home, a shelter, a pavilion, as well as a temple or place of God. Saint Paul even uses this word in Second Corinthians 5:1, to refer to the temple of our body, since the body is the temple of our spirit and the Holy Spirit too. In the Old Testament the word often refers to the sacred tent of God with the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies within. The feast of Booths or Feast of Tabernacles celebrates when the Lord will come and "tabernacle" or live, camp out with HIS people during the thousand year reign of Jesus Christ on Earth. Also the Feast of Booths (or Tabernacles) recalls when God's people the Jews were camping in the Wilderness for 40 years. See "tabernacles, feast of" below.

tabernacles, feast of....an annual feast of the Jews, sometimes called the Feast of Booths. It is held in the Autumn after harvest starting on the fifteenth day of the seventh month of the Jewish calendar, Tishri. The feast celebrates the wilderness tent life of God's people and looks forward to that day when the Messiah will tabernacle with HIS people.

table(s)....a tablet(s) of stone or clay to write on. *Another meaning of table is in Romans 11:9. It is referring to the Jewish Feast Table, and is quoting from Psalm 69:22 where David prophecies that Jesus would be given gall (poison or drugs) for HIS food and vinegar for HIS drink at the cross. As a result the Jewish Feast Table would become a trap and a blinding thing to the Jews.

tablets....in Isaiah 3:20 the KJV translators had difficulty with Hebrew words for women's accessories of that ancient time. The best translation of the Hebrew word here probably is referring to "a perfume box" of some kind.

tabret....a musical percussion instrument with a skin or membrane. It was played by hand. Probably our tambourine would be a near relative to this instrument. One unusual use of the word appears in Job 17:6. That use may be a bit of a stretching on the meaning of the original Hebrew. Job perhaps is saying that he is beaten upon like a tambourine. But some translations have used smitten or spit upon instead. But all the other uses of this word in the KJV truly refer to a musical instrument. See timbrel.

tare....not to be confused with "tares," below. This word "tare" is a KJV past tense for the modern verb "tear." See Mark 9:20.

tares....weeds.

tarry....to stop, wait or delay. Sometimes this waiting is waiting in prayer.

Tarshish....a distant, exotic port of call in the minds of the people of the Holy Land during ancient times. Some evidence indicates it could be in Spain. Jonah's voyage headed west in that direction. But other Scriptures point to a distant port in the Indian Ocean departing from Israel's Southern harbor in the Gulf of Aqabah. The bottom line is that we just don't know for sure where Tarshish was. Perhaps some archeological discovery will reveal this in the future.

Tarsus....Saint Paul's (originally his name was Saul of Tarsus) home town in the province of Cilicia. See Cilicia.

taunt, taunting....scornful or jeering remark(s).

"teil tree"....in Isaiah 6:13 the KJV mentions this tree. The Hebrew word being translated is more probably referring to an oak tree or a the terebinth tree. A "teil tree" is a lime or linden tree which is not the best translation of the Hebrew.

temperate....able to exercise self control or self restraint.

tempest....a storm, often on a body of water.

tempestuous....stormy, violent, turbulent.

temporal....temporary, passing, the opposite of eternal, here today and gone tomorrow.

temptation....a test, trial, difficult situation where a person may feel lured, attracted, drawn toward something sinful and wrong. God never sends temptations, but HE does at times refuse to stop a temptation that is coming our way. HE refuses to stop it because HE senses that we need a test to strengthen or prove us. Again it is so important to understand that God NEVER originates temptations or sends them. And that HE stops many temptations from reaching us because we are too weak to resist. HE is a good God! HE filters the temptations of HIS children. Those who are HIS enemies may not have this privilege.

teraphim....small idols, household gods, easily stolen.

terrible....different from today's totally negative meaning. In KJV "terrible" means awesomely powerful bringing much fear and great respect to the one who witnesses the terrible thing. Under that definition a "terrible" thing could be good or evil.

testament....a covenant, an agreement of very deep and serious nature. The "will" that a lawyer assists you to write is a "testament."

testimony....the written or verbal witness of God and or man. That is why God's Word, the Bible, is a testimony, because it is evidence of truth, witness of truth.

tetrarch....a royal title allowed by the Romans in their great domain. This title was lower than a full king and indicating that this noble was dependent and limited in power. Originally a tetrarch was one who received a quarter of some greater kingdom. But that definition became blurred over time.

thee....you.

thence....there.

thenceforth....from that time forward.

Theophilus....both in the Gospel of Luke and in the book of Acts Doctor Luke, the writer and beloved physician, begins by addressing someone by the name of Theophilus. This is a mystery. Some have thought that perhaps Luke had some sponsor or some interested person that he wrote for. Others have noted that the name, "Theophilus" in Greek means something close to "friend of God." He may have been writing to any and all who desire and want to be the friend of God. Yet, he did address Theophilus as "most excellent Theophilus." Some have thought that the added honor would not be given unless there was a real Theophilus. Still others have thought that Theophilus was a cover name to protect the true identity of the sponsor or interested party. Whatever the truth is this Theophilus has two books of the Bible kind of dedicated to him. My curiosity peeks when I think about it.

Thessalonica....a city on Paul's travels. It is located in the province of Macedonia. See Macedonia.

"the which"....usually means "that." (See Matthew 13:44)

thine....another KJV form of "you" or "your."

third hour....9 A.M. in the morning.

thirtyfold....thirty times, or multiplied by thirty.

thither....over there, the opposite of hither (or here).

threescore....sixty.

Three Taverns....this was a stop over place on the way to Rome along the Appian Way. It is 33 miles from Rome. Some more Roman Christians met Paul and his guards as he approached Rome at this point. Others had gone further and met him earlier at the Appii Forum ten miles beyond Three Taverns.

thresh....same as modern word thrash, which is the process of beating out grain from the straw.

thrice....three.

"throng him"....(Mark 3:9) the crowds were so great that Jesus had a boat ready that HE might teach from the boat or exit onto Lake Galilee because the people were trying to touch HIM in order to be healed. He did not mind healing, but HE did not want a riot to break out bringing injury to the people or HIS disciples. Jesus was extremely wise!

Thyatira....a city in what is now Western Turkey. It was near the South side of the Lycus river, maybe 40 miles airline inland from the Aegean Sea. Pergamum was Northwest and Sardis South of Thyatira.

Tiberias....KJV spelling of "Tiberius." Lake Galilee was also named Lake Tiberius for Tiberius Caesar.

Tiberius Caesar....see Caesar.

tidings....news, information.

timbrel....a musical instrument, something like our tambourine.

Timotheus....Timothy

tin....tin ore was employed in the early making of bronze. It was imported to the Middle East.

tithe....the giving of a tenth of all of ones increase to the Lord. Some have said tithing is not taught in the New Testament. In Matthew 23:23 Jesus makes mention of the Pharisees for tithing even one herb seed out of ten but neglecting other parts of the Law. Then HE says that they should do the weighter things but continue their tithing by not leaving it "undone."

tittle....(see definition of "jot").

toil....work, labor.

tongues....most often this word means "languages." However, in Acts 2:3 "tongues" refers to tongues of fire, supernatural flames that rested on the heads of each believer. But in the very next verse, Acts 2:4, "tongues" means languages. See the next definition for more info.

tongue(s), unknown....In 1611 there were thousands of languages that were unwritten. There was no European who could understand some of those foreign languages. As a result such a language was an "unknown tongue." But today most languages have been translated and are not totally "unknown." This is why the KJV translators literally added a word when they translated the New Testament account of the gift of tongues. They wanted their readers to understand that these were languages "unknown" to the speakers, not learned by the speakers. But the Greek only says they spoke in languages. The word "unknown" is not in the Greek. I don't believe the KJV translators made a mistake. They were simply trying to clarify what was going on for 1611 readers. God will give HIS people a gift to speak and pray in languages unknown to the speaker. This gift is given in association with the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This is a very deep truth. There is much confusion about this gift in the churches, even among pastors. Let me just say that I take the teaching of the Bible over every other book on this topic!! Don't let some book or teaching overshadow what God's Book says! Read the Bible and pray and ask God to open this truth to you. Otherwise you may be mislead. I was confused for years about this truth. Finally in later life I came into this experience. God has provided a heavenly language that sometimes comes from my lips while I pray. I still pray in English...but at times the presence of God becomes so strong another language or languages comes forth. This gift of praying in a language you don't understand has many purposes. For one it allows the Holy Spirit to formulate a prayer that is 100 percent within the will of God. It allows a prayer to be uttered to God that cannot be wire tapped by the enemy. It breaks all pride, because the believer can take no credit in that prayer. It requires utter submission. The prayer also can become a perfected praise mechanism. It totally bypasses the fleshly mind and fleshly logic. This gift helps overcome pride. Such prayer allows a direct channel to be opened between Heaven and the believer who is praying with the aid of this gift. The prayer language gift is the doorway to all the other gifts. torments....demonic oppressions.

"touch a woman"....this phrase can be confusing in First Corinthians 7:1. Paul is speaking about marriage. He is saying, "it is good for a man not to marry." He is talking about living a pure life without intimacy with anyone but God. Paul, himself, admits that such a lifestyle is not for everyone and that he himself was given a special gift to live without romantic or erotic attachments. God gives very few people the gift of celibacy, or the ability to live untouched by romantic or erotic interests. Most of us were designed by God to be married. Marriage is a good thing and only those with the special celibacy-gift should rule out marriage and family. God is the author of marriage and family, and Jesus did HIS first miracle in blessing a marriage of a man and a woman in Cana of Galilee.

tow....in Judges 16:9 and Isaiah 1:31 "tow" refers to the refuse, the short, less usable fibers that are left over in the process by which the flax plant is turned into linen. These fibers can be used to make a very coarse, rough cloth of limited quality. But the "tow" fibers were more often a discard to be consumed in the fire.

Trachonitis....the only information we have on the location of this area is from the historian Josephus. He said it was located 25 miles South of Damascus near the river Pharpar.

transgressors....lawless ones, criminals, evil ones, sinners, law breakers.

tradition(s)....whenever you see this word, please remember that in the Bible it is used in ONLY one way. It always refers to Jewish religious practices that have been passed down for generations and have been frozen in a kind of cultural cement. And to break such a practice is considered very, very offensive in the Jewish culture.

translated....moved, transported or exchanged.

travail....extremely hard work, but especially labor pains in child birth.

tread....walk on.

treasury....in the Temple in Jerusalem in Jesus' time the area where offerings, tithes and gifts were deposited. Jesus sat and watched as the rich and poor gave their gifts.

trespasses....in the prayer that Jesus taught HIS disciples to pray "trespasses" and "debts" refer to our sins.

tribulation....very difficult trials, tests and/or upheavals. There is a special period of World Tribulation that is to come that will be so terrible, Jesus tells us, that it will supersede all times of difficulty before or after it!! [See Matthew 24:21] This Tribulation time has multiple purposes. It will be the last and most difficult squeezing and convincing time so that if anyone is still left that might turn to God then perhaps they will. Secondly, it is a time of judgment upon the wicked powers that will be ruling the Earth at that time. Third it is a time when evil is allowed to come to full maturity for the purpose, I believe, of showing without doubt that evil is a failure.

tribute....payments demanded by a conquering king of a conquered land. In the New Testament tribute often also means taxation, taxes.

trieth....to approve, to test something, to investigage.

triumph....the state of being victorious.

Troas....a city located in the district of Mysia in the Northwest corner of what is now Turkey. See Mysia.

trodden....pressed down and crushed under foot.

Trogyllium....a place the KJV says that Paul's ship anchored and rested. Today that place is called St. Paul's Bay. It is near the Western side of Mount Mycale on the Western shore of what is now Turkey.

trow....to think, imagine, believe. Example: "I trow not" means "I don't think so."

try....test.

trump....a musical instrument in the horn category, generally a trumpet, but at times this word is used to translate the Hebrew word for an instrument made from a male goat's horn, a ram's horn, the "showphar."

tumult....a commotion, uproar, confusion, a disturbance of loud voices or agitation of some kind, even a riot.

twain....two.

twofold....two times or multiplied by two.

Tyre....see Tyrus below.

Tyrus....City of Tyre in what was then Phoenicia and today is Lebanon, on the coast of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.

unblameable....unblamable

uncomely....not beautiful, graceful or lovely, unattractive to the mind and/or eye.

undone....ruined, destroyed.

unfeigned....sincere, genuine.

unlade....unload.

"unleavened bread, feast of"....leaven symbolizes sin in Jewish thought. Each year just prior to passover all the leaven is cleaned out of the Jewish house. From that time until the feast of Pentecost, some 50 days later, all bread is made flat, no leaven. The feast of Passover and unleavened bread go together and are separate. The passover meal is an unleavened bread meal. See passover.

unseemly....unfit, improper, indecent, unbecoming.

untoward....perverse, stubborn, unruly.

upbraid....to scold.

usurp....to dominate.

"usurp authority over the man"....In 1st Timothy 2:12 my Greek interlinear translation says that the Greek translates this way, "to exercise authority of a man." Most translations translate the "of" as "over." But I like the simpler rendition "of a man." Women are not to take the place "of a man" in the leadership of the church. And by the same token men ought not to take the position granted women by God in the church. My Bible says that women are better at discipling women and men are better at discipling men. When we modify God's directives we produce problems in the Body of Christ!

usury....interest collected or paid on money that has been loaned. Most Christians have never noticed that the Bible teaches that God takes a dim view of making money by interest. Interest is something you collect from enemies, not your brother, not your neighbor, not your friend, not the poor. The World is going to pay dearly for it's "credit" mentality.

utterance....sounds from the mouth that have meaning, words coming forth. **In 1st Corinthians 1:5 the word "utterance" is used to mean speech, words and even perhaps the heavenly languages that are uttered as the Holy Ghost directs.

uttermost....last, most distant, farthest out.

Uzziah....there were three persons in the KJV with this name. The two that we know little of are mentioned in 1st Chronicles 6:24 and 1st Chronicles 27:25. **The third person, King Uzziah from 783-742 B.C., reigned on the throne of his father, King Amaziah. Uzziah was in the line of King David and ruled from Jerusalem over the Southern Kingdom. Uzziah is believed to have reigned for 42 years, beginning when he was but 16. The Bible reports that he began well. But he made a serious mistake. He attempted to burn incense in the Temple and was stricken with leprosy for this prideful action. Because of the disease he was not able to carry out his responsibility as king and his son became regent in his place. But he may still have been the power behind the throne.

vain....empty, worthless, hollow.

vainglory....vanity or self conceit.

valour....valor

vanity....a wrong thing, improper action, sin, useless and purposeless activity, wasteful doing.

vanities....wrong things, improper practices, sins.

vapour....vapor.

variance....active disagreement.

vaunteth....to boast or brag.

vehement....violent.

"veil of the Temple"....the very, very thick, multi-layer curtain that separated the Holy of Holies (inner most room) from the next lesser room, the Holy Place. The Ark of the Covenant was in the Holy of Holies. The High Priest could only enter once a year to do the ceremony concerning the sins of the Nation. The Ark was long lost by Jesus day. Nevertheless the curtain was ripped from top to bottom when Jesus died by God Almighty symbolizing that there was now a way to God that all people might take. And that way is Jesus Christ of Nazareth. HE is the Way!

vengeance....to return injury upon the one or ones who first brought injury, punishment.

verily....truly. Literally when the KJV quotes Jesus as saying "verily" HE is uttering the word "amen." Instead of "verily verily" HE is literally saying in the Greek "amen amen," or truly truly. "Amen" is one of those words that originated in the Hebrew and traveled to most every other language, like the word "hallelujah."

verity....truthfulness or a truth.

vessels....containers, jars, bowls.

vesture....a robe

vex....to torment, or persecute.

victuals....food.

vile....wicked, evil, depraved.

vinedresser....one who works in the vineyard pruning, cultivating and re-routing the grape vines.

vintage....the wine or the produce of a particular region or location and of a particular year or time.

viol(s)....ancient, stringed musical instrument.

virtue....the goodness of God. Concerning Jesus the power that flowed from HIM, which was the power of the Holy Ghost. Luke calls this "virtue." Jesus felt virtue flow from HIM when the woman touched the hem of his garment. He knew a miracle had occurred.

vipers....very poisonous snakes.

visage....the face in respect to its form or proportions of its features. For example: His visage took on the look of a lion.

vocation....You can find this word in Ephesians 4:1. It is referring to the calling, invitation or station in life. Today that word almost exclusively deals with a person's profession or job. But this is not so in Scripture.

voweth....making a vow, making a binding promise usually to the Lord God.

wag....wave or shake a body part such as the hand or the head.

wages....earnings, what you get in a paycheck. The wages of sin is the earnings or paycheck of sin, which is death.

wail....this KJV word is used to translate three original language words. It is used to translate a word that means to bewail. It is used to translate a word that means to weap loudly and tear ones own hair out. It is used to translate a word that means to beat on one's own breast in great grief.

wallowed....rolled about down on the ground, in the dirt.

wanton....In Isaiah 3:16, where we find this word in the Old Testament is is used to define the kind of eye movements certain fallen women had. The Hebrew is speaking of how a woman can use her eyes to flirt with a man, to lead him on.

wantonness....the state of being undisciplined, unmanageable, unrestrained impurity and unrestrained looseness. Today the word has come to mean overflowing with sexual desire. But in 1611 the center meaning of the word was more in the area of unruliness, out of control.

ware....aware. See Acts 14:6.

wast....was.

watch....a term Jesus used when asking Peter, James and John to accompany him deeper into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. Also a term used by Jesus in regard to Christians being alert for the return of Christ. I believe this term "watch" means that we are through prayer, fellowship with the Holy Spirit and drinking in the Word of God to be gazing into the Heavenlies in a spiritual sense looking, waiting upon God almighty for any word, command or indication of what is next.

watches....the fourth watch of the night is from 3 A.M. to 6 A.M.

wax....grow.

waxed....grown.

way....sometimes this word literally mean "road."

wert....were.

whatsoever....whatever it might, may or could be.

whence....from what place, where, from what source or cause, to the place from which.

whereby....by which, by means of which.

wherefore....for which, or sometimes it means "why?"

wherein....in what, in what way.

whereinsoever....in, or during, or because of.

wheresoever....whatever place.

whereof....of which, of what, of whom.

whereon....on which, on what.

whereunto....to what?

whereupon....at which, upon which.

wherewith....this KJV word often means "with which."

wherewithal....can mean "wherewith" see "wherewith" above. Or, it can mean "the means necessary to accomplish something."

whiles....while.

whit....bit, as in "every whit (bit) whole." Whit refers to each point, each cell, each molecule of a thing.

whither....where.

whithersoever....wherever

wholly....totally, completely.

whoredom(s)....[Hosea 1:2] meaning adultery, figuratively meaning idolatry. A wife of "whoredoms" refers to a woman who is in the business of multiple adulteries, a prostitute. Again, figuratively this word has come to mean idolatry, idolatries. Israel's unfaithfulness to her true husband, God Almighty, shows itself in the worship of false gods.

whoremonger(s)....immoral one(s), debauchee(s).

whoso....whosoever.

wilderness....basically desert country, very dry, rough, not inhabited. This is starkly different from today's understanding that a wilderness is any place that is natural and hard to get to. The Bible "wilderness" is harsh desert.

wiles....deceits, schemes, trickeries.

wilfully....willfully

"will-worship"....in Colossians 2:23 the KJV translates a Greek word with these two words. That Greek word means unwarranted piety, sanctimony. This is referring to self made religion, not from God; something cooked-up and not genuinely from the Lord.

wilt....will.

wimple....In Isaiah 3:22 we find this word. It is a head and neck covering worn by Hebrew women when they were outdoors. It is a type of veil. It could be pulled to hide the face, but more often the face was not covered.

winebibber....an alcoholic whose weakness is wine, a "wino."

winepress....in Bible times a winepress or wine vat was usually two rectangular compartments carved right out of the rock. The first was larger and higher with a narrow channel cut in the stone to the lower and smaller compartment. Three or more men would tread or walk on the grapes in the upper compartment. The juice would run through the channel to the lower compartment where it would be collected.

wise....in Matthew 1:18 wise translates to "way" or "manner" or "mode." You also find this usage in Romans 10:6.

wist....knew (a past tense of "wit.") See "wit" below.

wit....to know.

withal....besides, still.

withered....dried up.

withholdeth....The KJV translators used this word to translate three different original language words. These words meant to hold down securely, to keep or hold back or maintain, to refuse, to restrain and/or refrain.

withs....Today spelled "withes." "Green withes" spoken of in Judges 16:7, to bind Sampson, would be undried, pliable, green, wooden vines or roots twisted into a very strong kind of rope.

wizard(s)....this word is used in the KJV to translate Hebrew words that refer to a male or female occult-type person who claims to communicate with the spirits of those who have died. This person may be a quack who simply takes money and fools people, or this person may indeed utilize dark powers from Hell to communicate with wrong spirits who pose as the departed spirit of some loved one. This activity is extremely disapproved of by God Almighty. It is an extremely dangerous and unwise sin! Beware! Don't go there!

woe....terrible, awful, cursed things.

womb....the uterus where the baby develops for nine months prior to birth.

wont....in the habit of, custom, habit, usual practice.

Word....in the Gospel of John the first chapter when John uses the word "Word" he is referring to Jesus Christ the living Word of God. When God the Father opens HIS mouth the sound that comes out is the living Word, Jesus. God's Word is a living Person, Jesus Christ. And God the Father's breath is a living person, the Holy Spirit! God is so awesome.

works....in Romans 4:2 Paul is referring to good deeds, religious activities, helping the poor, etc. Generally this word means deeds of some kind, actions, activities that we can or could do. There are good works and evil works.

worm....In Mark 9:46 when Jesus speaks of those who enter Hell, he refers to the never-dying spirit of any such one in Hell as a "worm." He states that their worm does not die. This word that Jesus spoke was truly the word used for a grub, an earth worm or a maggot. He did not use this word in a derogatory manner to put down fallen spirits. He used this word to underline how little life a spirit separated from God has and how little life it takes for pain to still be excruciating. This is a terribly powerful warning concerning the agony of choosing eternal death rather than receiving Jesus and accepting God's joyous eternal life.

wormwood....a plant with a bitter taste. This word is often used to help the writer communicate just how awful, bitter something truly is.

worshipped....worshiped

worthies....nobles.

wot....know.

"wound him up"....wrapped him up. See Acts 5:6

wroth....angry.

wrought....old paste tense of work. You could replace wrought with the word "worked."

ye....you (plural).

yea....yes, affirmative.

yoke....a wooden, double-neck-hole clamping device put on oxen so that the two oxen can work together to pull a plow or a cart.

yokefellow....colleague or co-worker in Christ.

Zabulon....the Greek spelling of Zebulun, see Zebulun below.

Zacharias....KJV spelling of Zechariah a priest, the father of John the Baptist. See Abia.

Zalmunna....see Midian, above.

Zarephath....a sea coast town on a point almost half way between Tyre and Sidon, on the Mediterranean Sea.

zeal....eager interest and enthusiasm.

Zebah....see Midian, above.

Zebulun....the tenth son of Jacob from his wife Leah. Zebulun is one of the 12 tribes of Israel. The city of Capernaum was in the tribal area of Zebulun.

Zeeb....see Midian, above.

Zelotes....zealot, the over-eager one.

Zidon....Sidon, a Phoenician city located between the cities of Tyre and Beirut, in what is Lebanon today.

Zion....The primary or root understanding is a reference to the very hill where the Jewish Temples were built, Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. However, phrases like "in Zion" often refer to the body or realm of true believers, true Jews, true people of God.

Zoan....a city in Northeaster Egypt. This city was first known as Avaris and was the capital of the Hyksos kingdom. Then the name was changed when Ramses II was Pharaoh. In honor of Ramses II the city was called Per-Ramses. Ramses II was the Pharaoh in power at the time of the Exodus, the Pharaoh who would not let God's people go until the 12 plagues changed his mind. Ramses II ruled approximately from 1290-1224 b.c. Later the name of the city was changed again to Tanis. Tanis is taken from the Greek pronunciation of the name of this city. The Hebrew word for Tanis is where the King James gets the name Zoan. The Hebrew name was taken from the Egyptian name. Today the location of this city is called San el-Hajar. In checking maps it appears that Zoan is quite near to the West bank of the Suez Canal, where the Canal meets the Mediterranean Sea.
